Download or read book Food Fight written by Mckay Jenkins and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are GMOs really that bad? A prominent environmental journalist takes a fresh look at what they actually mean for our food system and for us. In the past two decades, GMOs have come to dominate the American diet. Advocates hail them as the future of food, an enhanced method of crop breeding that can help feed an ever-increasing global population and adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Critics, meanwhile, call for their banishment, insisting GMOs were designed by overeager scientists and greedy corporations to bolster an industrial food system that forces us to rely on cheap, unhealthy, processed food so they can turn an easy profit. In response, health-conscious brands such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have started boasting that they are “GMO-free,” and companies like Monsanto have become villains in the eyes of average consumers. Where can we turn for the truth? Are GMOs an astounding scientific breakthrough destined to end world hunger? Or are they simply a way for giant companies to control a problematic food system? Environmental writer McKay Jenkins traveled across the country to answer these questions and discovered that the GMO controversy is more complicated than meets the eye. He interviewed dozens of people on all sides of the debate—scientists hoping to engineer new crops that could provide nutrients to people in the developing world, Hawaiian papaya farmers who credit GMOs with saving their livelihoods, and local farmers in Maryland who are redefining what it means to be “sustainable.” The result is a comprehensive, nuanced examination of the state of our food system and a much-needed guide for consumers to help them make more informed choices about what to eat for their next meal.
Book Synopsis Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

Book Synopsis The 'Real' American Diet by : Kevin C. Alston Sr.
Download or read book The 'Real' American Diet written by Kevin C. Alston Sr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a culmination of the author's life, but mainly the past 10 years, where personal tragedies have led him to discover more about the correlation with food, nutrition & the diseases of today, & how it affects us all. This program is an experiment of sorts, with the author using himself as the guinea pig, with positive results having been discovered, & hopefully, in time, even bigger positive results yet to come. Between our government & Big Business, we, the people, are already involved in an experiment. It's like a big laboratory. With all of the harmful toxins that are allowed in our air, food, & water, diseases are at epidemic-like levels, & the author, for one, would like to know if there is more to this than is being told to us. It speaks volumes when other nations refuse to accept grains & meats from us, or at least it does to the author. Most of the ailments we suffer from today emanate from our guts, & our poor diets keep the sickness-wheels turning, costing each of us millions of dollars, a whole lot of heartache, pain, & suffering. It's time to make a change, & that change started with the author's experiment on himself.
Book Synopsis Diet for a New America 25th Anniversary Edition by : John Robbins
Download or read book Diet for a New America 25th Anniversary Edition written by John Robbins and published by H J Kramer. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, Diet for a New America awakened the conscience of a nation with its startling examination of the food we buy and eat — and the moral, economic, and medical price we pay for it. Drawing a clear line connecting America’s factory farm system with disease, animal cruelty, and ecological crises, Robbins makes perhaps the most eloquent argument for vegetarianism ever published. Robbins walked away from his family’s business — the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire — to pursue his dream of promoting a healthy society that practices “compassionate stewardship of a balanced ecosystem.” In Diet for a New America he presents both a disturbing portrait of our current system and a vision for the future that will educate and empower readers to change.
Book Synopsis It's All about the Food by : Pat Smith
Download or read book It's All about the Food written by Pat Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America today we face a paradox: we've never had more food at our disposal, but we've also never had worse nutrition habits. The problem lies in the way that food is grown, processed, and marketed. The truth is that our food is literally making us sick. Pat Smith started out on a personal journey and ended up as a major public advocate for better food, better nutrition, and better eating. When it comes to diet and nutrition, her message is simple: It's All About The Food. Through a combination of in-depth research, folksy wisdom, and practical advice, she makes navigating the contemporary food scene utterly workable for the average individual or family. This book is more than just a means to better nutrition. It could actually save your life. In It's All About The Food, Pat will invite you to undergo a true paradigm shift-embracing a new perspective on the importance of diet and health. As she points out, a diet should not be seen as a temporary weight loss regimen. Instead, a diet is simply the way we should be eating all the time. This doesn't mean we have to stop eating good food. Just the opposite. It actually means we can start eating better food. And that has to start first with education, so that it can lead to the right kinds of choices and the right kinds of daily habits.
