Book excerpt: As noted psychiatrists, authors, and lecturers, Baars and Terruwe excitingly blend medieval and classical notions of the human psyche together with modern clinical discoveries as they probe the topic of psychic wholeness and healing. The authors explore the entire human psyche, including man's spiritual dimension, which is an area totally ignored by most modern psychiatrists--creating in modern man an ever-deepening sense of frustration in searching for effective psychiatric treatment for his emotional turmoil. The books' numerous detailed clinical case histories clarify the authors' therapeutic principles. The following questions, among many others, are considered in this work: How best to help a person who lives in constant fear that he has committed a serious sin even though he knows he has not? Does a person who wants to live a moral life, yet cannot refrain from doing things that he knows are immoral, suffer from weakness of willpower or from a neurosis that would lend itself to therapy?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This breakthrough book is the product of many years of rethinking the psychology and psychopathology of the 'normal' man: a rethinking triggered by the authors' disenchantment with the philosophy and therapy of psychoanalysis, with its emphasis on the psychology of the 'abnormal' individual. "As psychiatrists and as Christians," write Doctors Terruwe and Baars, "we are not satisfied with merely restoring our patients to their former level of usefulness in society. We want to go beyond utilitarian criteria of performance or adjustment and assist our patients in attaining that level of happiness commensurate with their potentials." The failure of traditional therapy to help many of their patients led the authors to the formulation of a new theory of neurosis - the frustration neurosis. In this massive book the authors unfold this new theory, deeply rooted in Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy, in as style accessible to both the professional and the intelligent layman. Happily so, since this massive work will be a boon to clergymen, social workers and anyone counselling troubled people. Needless to add, its importance to psychiatrists can hardly be exaggerated. Some of our most creative and intelligent people are emotionally ill. But they can be cured. In clinical detail, with a wealth of case histories, the authors show ho their new theory has proved itself in daily counselling. Doctors Terruwe and Baars are well aware that their theory of frustration neurosis is a challenge to the other schools of psychiatry. For one thing, some of their ideas are rooted in the insights of philosophers whom most psychiatrists have tended to ignore. Yet the proof is in the results, and the authors set forth an impressive record. Every open-minded psychiatrist - indeed everyone who works in counselling - will want to give Doctors Terruwe and Baars a careful reading." --

Baars, MD (1919-1981) was a Dutch-born American citizen who practiced psychiatry in the United States from 1946 until his death. Educated at Oxford University and the University of Amsterdam Medical School, Dr. Baars served in the anti-Nazi underground in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands during World War II. Captured by the Nazis, he spent one and a half years in Buchenwald concentration camp. He emigrated to the United States following the war, and discovered Dutch psychiatrist Dr. Anna A. Terruwe's work on energy and frustration neuroses in the mid-1950's. He further developed and promoted this work throughout the rest of his psychiatric career. His books include Born Only Once, Feeling and Healing Your Emotions, and I Will Give Them a New Heart: Reflections on the Priesthood and the Renewal of the Church. Drs. Baars and Terruwe coauthored Psychic Wholeness and Healing, and Healing the Unaffirmed. His autobiography, Doctor of the Heart, details much of his experience in Buchenwald.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the possibility of an ontological and epistemological account of the psychological category 'neurosis'. Intertwining thoughts from German idealism, Continental philosophy and psychology, the book shows how neurosis precedes and exists independently from human experience and lays the foundations for a non-essentialist, non-rational theory of neurosis; in cognition, in perception, in linguistics and in theories of object-relations and vitalism. The personal essays collected in this volume examine such issues as assimilation, the philosophy of neurosis, aneurysmal philosophy, and the connection between Hegel and Neurosis, among others. The volume establishes the connection between a now redundant psycho-analytic term and an extremely progressive discipline of Continental philosophy and Speculative realism.

Are you sure you are leading your children to emotional maturity? Feeling and Healing Your Emotions offers guidelines for emotional and spiritual wholeness. In simple question-and-answer format, readers learn that all emotions are positive aspects of our nature and that a fully developed emotional life can strengthen one's spiritual life. Feeling and Healing Your Emotions shows how humanistic sychology often fails to treat the whole person by ignoring his spiritual dimension. Further, it shows how the Bible is perfectly consistent with a psychology that combines findings in modern clinical psychiatry with centuries-old Christian beliefs about the body, mind and spirit.

Book excerpt: KADOC Studies on Religion, Culture and Society, Volume 6Research continues to show that the Christian religion is gradually disappearing from the public, cultural, and social spheres in Western Europe. Even on the individual level, institutionalized religion is becoming increasingly marginalized. New forms of religious life and community, however, may point toward a resurgence of Christian churches in postmodern Europe. This book focuses on the complex transformations Christian churches in Western Europe have undergone since World War II. In English and French.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timeless classic, Born Only Once, describes the emotional turmoil of many persons and offers hope for healing through the author's compassionate understanding of their deepest wounds. Psychiatrist Conrad Baars discusses this inner unrest in terms of the fundamental human need for unconditional love, or affirmation. When children have been denied the gift of themselves through affirmation to a greater or lesser degree, they continue to look for this unconditional love, and later as adults suffer from deep feelings of inferiority, inadequacy, uncertainty, and insecurity, as well as having difficulty relating to others. Baars describes how authentic affirmation strengthens a person to feel secure and happy in himself, able to confront the world and to relate to others with confidence. Affirmation is what unaffirmed persons and those with Emotional Deprivation Disorder need to feel at peace, strong, and secure in their own identity. Baars lists many things that unaffirmed persons can do to help themselves, but it is hoped that the reader will be moved to lead an authentically affirming life by being open to the goodness of persons, things, nature, ideas, etc. This simple way of being, of openness to being moved, can bring peace and resolve difficulties.

In 1951 he again became Prime Minister, before finally retiring in 1955. Upon his death, the Queen granted him the honor of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of statesmen in the world. This unique images title contains many rare and unpublished photographs of Churchill throughout his military and political career.

This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas has been researching his family's Jewish background for the last thirty years. Herein he investigates how his Jewish grandparents, and aunt-defined as a nonprivileged Mischling, survived the war while living in the heart of Nazi Germany. This led Thomas to research Hitler's fear of having partial Jewish ancestry and expanded into a full-blown study of following Christianity’s understanding of the Jewish identity of Jesus of Nazareth throughout history. Not leaving matters here, Thomas outlines how Marian dogmatic theology, used at the time of the Shoah, brought to conclusion the Church's long journey in defining the "time" of ensoulment as articulated in the papal document Ineffabilis Deus, promulgated by Pius in 1854. This happened twenty-seven years after the discovery of the human ovum in 1827 by Karl Ernst von Baer. Years later, with the emergence of Nazi racial ideology, many anti-Christian Christians attempted to invert Christianity's core message of salvation through faith toward biological ends. This would not do. Roman authorities had consistently held throughout the centuries that faith is about salvation and not about biology. According to that same end, the "ideal" of ensoulment, since the time of the Church's renewed understanding of it—beginning in 1854—and indeed as it was first articulated through the writings of Aristotle and received into Christianity through the writings of Saint Augustine and later Thomas Aquinas—was newly preserved within the confines of Western civilization. This is the first book, the author knows of, that follows Augustine's concept of ensoulment, as well as Aquinas's thinking on the matter, while linking these to Karl Ernst von Baer's discovery of the human ovum in 1827, up until the events of Shoah and beyond. This study is phenomenological in nature in that it does "not" follow Jesus of Nazareth (the Virgin Mary) throughout history, but rather follows the "image" of Jesus of Nazareth (the Virgin Mary)—a monumental difference. This study supports the Second Vatican Council, the Church's latest and ongoing efforts in affirming the Jewish identities of both Jesus of Nazareth and the Virgin Mary, John Paul II's call for a purification of memory beginning in a year of Jubilee, as well as the many present efforts in Catholic-Jewish relations. This study builds upon the author's past article: "Following the Virgin Mary through Auschwitz: Marian Dogmatic Theology at the Time of the Shoah," published in Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History, Vol. 14, winter 2008, No. 3, pp. 1-24.
