Download or read book The Effects of Early Social-Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children written by The St. Petersburg-USA Orphanage Research Team and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undertaken at orphanages in Russia, this study tests the role of early social and emotion experience in the development of children. Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

In this book, a distinguished group of contributors explore the ways in which women's sexual and reproductive capabilities, and their bodies, are regarded as societal and patriarchal property, and how as the "other", they can be the focus of mistreatment such as rape, sexual slavery, restriction of reproduction rights, and ongoing societal repression. They also explore the cultural definitions of motherhood, and how these set narrow definitions for the acceptable face of motherhood and for being a woman generally
Book Synopsis Social & Emotional Development by : Dave Riley
Download or read book Social & Emotional Development written by Dave Riley and published by Redleaf Press. This book was released on 2007-10-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find out what the research says about common early childhood program practices, such as playing "Simon Says" or holding children while feeding them—time-tested activities you intuitively know help young children. Social and Emotional Development explores the effectiveness of these early learning tools and helps answer the question, "Why do we do what we do?" Children in child care centers often spend large chunks of time on activities without an obvious academic component, such as learning to dance to different tempos. Research shows, however, that these activities promote children’s social and emotional development. This practical and accessible book explains the research behind many common, wise early childhood practices, as well as the shortcomings of others. Key topics include: How to help children form a strong attachment with an adult and foster a feeling of security. The importance of peer relationships and how to help children learn to take turns, develop empathy, and not act selfishly. Three forms of self-regulation: controlling impulsive behavior, developing problem-solving ability, and learning to regulate emotions.

Book Synopsis Research and Practice in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health by : Cory Shulman
Download or read book Research and Practice in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health written by Cory Shulman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines infant and early childhood mental health and the importance of early emotional and social development for later developmental trajectories. It incorporates research and clinical perspectives and brings research findings to bear in evaluating intervention strategies. By incorporating empirical developmental literature that is directly relevant to infant mental health and clinical practice, the book addresses the multiple forces which shape young children’s mental health. These forces include child factors, parental and familial variables, childrearing practices, and environmental influences. In addition, the book explores parent-child relationships, family networks, and social supports as protective factors, as well as risk factors such as poverty, exposure to violence, and substance abuse, which influence and change developmental processes. It shows that, by examining socio-emotional development in a cultural context, human development in the twenty-first century can be conceptualized through differences, similarities and diversity perspectives, focusing on the rights of every individual child.
Book Synopsis Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy by : Björn Salomonsson
Download or read book Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy written by Björn Salomonsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy builds on Björn Salomonsson’s experiences as a psychoanalytic consultant working with parents and their babies. Emotional problems during the perinatal stages can arise and be observed and addressed by a skilled midwife, nurse or health visitor. Salomonsson has developed a method combining nurse supervision and therapeutic consultations which has lowered the thresholds for parents to come and talk with him. The brief consultations concern pregnant women, mother and baby, husband and wife, toddler and parent. The theoretical framework is psychoanalytic, but the mode of work is eclectic and adapted to the family’s situation and its members’ motivation. This book details such work, which can be applied globally; perinatal psychotherapy integrated with ordinary medical health care. It also explains how psychotherapy can be made more accessible to a larger population. Via detailed case presentations, the author takes the reader through pregnancy, childbirth and the first few years of life. He also brings in research studies emphasizing the importance of early interventions, with the aim of providing therapists with arguments for such work in everyday family health care. To further substantiate such arguments, the book ends with theoretical chapters and, finally, the author’s vision of the future of a perinatal health care that integrates medical and psychological perspectives. Psychodynamic Interventions in Pregnancy and Infancy will appeal to all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists working in this area, as well as clinical psychologists, clinical social workers and medical personnel working with parents and infants.

Download or read book The Developmental Science of Early Childhood: Clinical Applications of Infant Mental Health Concepts From Infancy Through Adolescence written by Claudia M. Gold and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical distillation of cutting-edge developmental research for mental health professionals. The field commonly known as "infant mental health" integrates current research from developmental psychology, genetics, and neuroscience to form a model of prevention, intervention, and treatment well beyond infancy. This book presents the core concepts of this vibrant field and applies them to common childhood problems, from attention deficits to anxiety and sleep disorders. Readers will find a friendly guide that distills this developmental science into key ideas and clinical scenarios that practitioners can make sense of and use in their day-to-day work. Part I offers an overview of the major areas of research and theory, providing a pragmatic knowledge base to comfortably integrate the principles of this expansive field in clinical practice. It reviews the newest science, exploring the way relationships change the brain, breakthrough attachment theory, epigenetics, the polyvagal theory of emotional development, the role of stress response systems, and many other illuminating concepts. Part II then guides the reader through the remarkable applications of these concepts in clinical work. Chapters address how to take a textured early developmental history, navigate the complexity of postpartum depression, address the impact of trauma and loss on children's emotional and behavioral problems, treat sleep problems through an infant mental health lens, and synthesize tools from the science of the developing mind in the treatment of specific problems of regulation of emotion, behavior, and attention. Fundamental knowledge of the science of early brain development is deeply relevant to mental health care throughout a client's lifespan. In an era when new research is illuminating so much, mental health practitioners have much to gain by learning this leading-edge discipline's essential applications. This book makes those applications, and their robust benefits in work with clients, readily available to any professional.
