Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy Everywhere The welcome accorded to the "Navy in Mesopotamia" has tempted me to offer to the public another book on naval work in foreign waters. The title I have chosen must not be taken to imply that I have attempted to describe the activities of the British Navy in every part of the world where they have been in progress. I have done no more than collect a few samples of naval operations in those theatres of war which fare sufficiently remote to have escaped almost entirely the notice of the war correspondents of the Press. These samples exclude altogether the ordinary routine work of the Navy - the watching for the German High Seas Fleet, the hunting and destroying of enemy submarines, the sweeping up of mines, the patrolling of many thousand square miles of sea to maintain a blockade of the enemy's coast, the convoying of merchant ships, and the transporting of the Army to any part of the?n world it happened to fancy. All these tasks are part=3 of the never-ending toil which falls to the lot of the Navy in war-time, and, though the successful performance of them is the first essential of our national existence, no literary effort should be needed to impress this fact on the minds of the British public. I have chosen, therefore, to confine myself to those naval performances which are quite outside the ordinary sphere, and about which the public have received comparatively little information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy at Home, Vol. 1 of 3 The cargo was tolerably common-place, and so far calculated for the market; but he had, by way of preserving it fora few years, sprinkled it over with a little salt, and a certain strong, sweet, distilled liquor, to infuse vigour and freshness through it, only known to our fore fathers, but inadmissible in the said ware houses, and totally out of the line of the said dealers, who indeed considered it contraband. That, ignorant of this fatal clause, or fact, they were turning in through the narrows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the Civil War Since that era the Navy of the United States has been making history for the country on a scale almost bewildering, and could the Old pioneer captains of 1812 have been permitted to look on from their present abode (wherever that may be), we doubt not but that they would have been astonished at the large fleets we were putting afloat with such wonderful rapidity; and they would also have acknowledged that their descend ants had nobly borne themselves in the war for the salvation of this Union, which was as dear to our forefathers as it is to us at the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ships Across the Sea: Stories of the American Navy in the Great War Among the twelve hundred men aboard the flag ship you could have found no more ardent champion of the holiday spirit than Henry Turnbull, boat swain's mate, who was commonly called Bugs. This surging enthusiasm was illogical and unexpected. It perplexed all hands. He was a slow, stubborn per son of few words and fewer friends, mild-mannered enough unless goaded too far, when the raw-boned frame and hairy fists were a persuasive argument. When off duty he was usually reading some book from the ship's library or picked up in a second-hand shop, scowling at the pages with earnest interest and muttering the words aloud. His faithful chum, his right bower, was unlike him, of course. The peppery, quick-witted Jim Cooney was all that a petty officer ought to be a brisk little man with a blue eye that bored like a gimlet. When he rasped out a command there was no dilly dallying. He bullied Bugs Turnbull outrageously, and their quarrels diverted the gun deck, but they had been inseparable through two enlistments. How we have actively participated in every war in which our nation has engaged, expeditions on every sea, and to every continent except Australia, our own Civil and Indian Wars, quelling riots, protecting American life, property, mail, and Presidents, and a long list of other activities in which Marines have played an im portant part in our history and contact with other nations. I am reminded of a factory in Baltimore which had a large sign painted across the front of the building, Born in Baltimore, raised everywhere. It was an umbrella factory. The Marine Corps was born in Philadelphia in 177 5 and Operates everywhere. End of historical sketch. We are justly proud of our record, and sing with pride that part of our Marine Hymn - From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, We Fight Our Country's Battles on the Land as on the Sea. But who took us to the land where we fought? Who took us across the sea? Upon whom did the government place the initial responsibility for the enforcement of its determined policy? The navy. The Navy has been our father and mother, tutored us during our childhood days, afforded Opportunities for us to learn by experience, watched and guard ed our growth to manhood, and demanded of our nation that we be allowed to grow strong and sufficient to perform the tasks which she has assigned to us. DO not weaken in that demand. We say, that by Congressional action, we are the oldest branch of the services. That's our story, and we'll stick to it. But we are proud of that tutelage, of that association, of the fact that the Navy has given us a job that measures up to the responsibility of any other element of the fleet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Squadron of the United States Navy, on a Friendly Cruise Around Latin America Each man of the United States squadron was so sincerely wel comed throughout Latin America that none of. Them, so far as I know, had a chance to see anything that did not appeal to his better nature. Therefore the writer is enabled to make mention of only the things that ennoble rather than of those that degrade. The southern portion of America undoubtedly has, just like the region up north, many disturbing elements to contend with; but, you may depend upon it, that it is strictly alert thereto. It is amazing how so many discordant. Elements can be held so severely in restraint as they are in most of the Latin American common wealths. The efficient manner in which United States sailors were everywhere shielded from petty annoyances pleased the lads. National patriotism, national wealth, and national resources would all prove unavailing if the United States were suddenly confronted by a determined enemy with a preponderance of guns manned by veterans. The writer frankly admits he has no sympathy with those watchdogs of the treasury who decry naval expenditures and the persistent increase of the navy. He does not be lieve the navy adequate for the protection of the nation, nor does he think the army sufficient. He believes Governmental economies along other lines would enable the nation to bring its defense up to an invincible point without working any ma terial hardship on the gentlemen of the trusts who loudly claim' to pay nearly all the taxes.
