Book Synopsis Trees As Symbol and Metaphor in the Middle Ages by : Michael Bintley
Download or read book Trees As Symbol and Metaphor in the Middle Ages written by Michael Bintley and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests, with their interlacing networks of trees and secret patterns of communication, are powerful entities for thinking-with. A majestic terrestrial community of arboreal others, their presence echoes, entangles, and resonates deeply with the human world. The essays collected here aim to highlight human encounters with the forest and its trees at the time of the European Middle Ages, when, whether symbol and metaphor, or actual and real, their lofty boughs were weighted with meaning. The chapters interrogate the pre-Anthropocene environment, reflecting on trees as metaphors for kinship and knowledge as they appear in literary, historical, art-historical, and philosophical sources. They examine images of trees and trees in-themselves across a range of environmental, material, and intellectual contexts, and consider how humans used arboreal and rhizomatic forms to negotiate bodies of knowledge and processes of transition. Looking beyond medieval Europe, they include discussion of parallel developments in the Islamic world and that of the Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand.

Book Synopsis The Natural History of Blenheim’s High Park by : Aljos Farjon
Download or read book The Natural History of Blenheim’s High Park written by Aljos Farjon and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2024-08-08 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Park, at Blenheim in Oxfordshire UK, is a SSSI of great significance for its numerous ancient oaks and the organisms associated with these trees. This book gives a detailed, lavishly illustrated and thoroughly researched description of the biodiversity and natural history of what is by several measures the most significant site for ancient oaks in Europe. It draws together the expertise of more 60 specialists, and reports on the results of in-depth surveys of High Park. Chapters cover different groups, including: flora (including bryophytes), fungi, lichens, molluscs, arachnids, flies, hymenoptera, butterflies, moths, beetles – with a special focus on saproxylic species, bugs, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals. Despite their undoubted importance, very few sites with ancient oaks in England, the most important European country for these magnificent trees, have seen a comprehensive published account, adding to the value of this study. Several of the contributing authors describe their survey techniques in some detail, some of which are not widely known. Records are analysed in the various chapters and often compared with data from other similar sites. Overall, the book gives encouraging evidence of the great biodiversity still to be found in England, and should help to stimulate similar efforts to uncover the biodiversity and describe the natural history of ancient parkland and woodland, so that conservation of these sites can be based on firm scientific data.

Book Synopsis An Unworthy Future by : Joseph Toomey
Download or read book An Unworthy Future written by Joseph Toomey and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to find an area of public policy more plagued by misunderstanding than energy policy. Even worse, every time the subject is raised, we are obligated to get mired in pointless arguments about the weather. This book helps set the record straight. Not convinced? Consider some of these inconvenient truths: The cost of green energy climate remediation is anywhere from 10 to 1,000 times greater than the damage from the climate change it attempts to alleviate. Obama's carbon tax would cost Americans $1.2 trillion over just ten years, but would only reduce the midrange three-degree modeled twenty-second-century global temperature increase by 0.038 degrees Celsius. This is not another skeptical global warming polemic, but an economic evaluation of how and why green energy will fail. A thoroughly researched, heavily documented book by an expert in his field, it will demonstrate in meticulous detail how wasteful and economically inefficient Obama's green energy future will be compared to other worthy alternatives.

The book highlights the latest development and innovation in environmental science, technology, and interdisciplinary research to improve the environment and health safety. It includes innovations and improvisations in the broad area of science and technology, natural resource, and environment management. It deliberates on the current burning issues of environment protection management and sustainable development, environmental pollution, global warming, and climate change. The development strategies must therefore be shaped by the following components: The satisfaction of basic human requirements The eradication of poverty Self-reliant and participatory development Environmental consciousness Technology has to play a critical role in the process of changing industrial society. But innovation has to be embedded in social and organizational innovation. This book provides a wide range of research articles in the area of science and technology, sustainability, natural resource management, ecology and its environmental fields, geosciences and geology, atmospheric sciences, sustainability, climate change, and extreme weather, global warming, and environmental change, the effect of climate change on the ecosystem, environment, and pollution.
