Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on two years of intensive fieldwork, this detailed community study breaks new ground. Combining anthropological and historical disciplines, it deals with village politics amongst rural Malays growing oil-palm and rubber. This study traces the continuing influence of the colonial and post-colonial state policies on contemporary rural development. It shows that village political cleavages are not just the result of modern electoral practices introduced after World War II but are responses to politico-economic events at the national and even international levels. It examines not only inter-party rivalry between the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) but also the intra-party politics of both organizations at the local level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socio-economic and political issues are dealt with selectively within a chronological historical framework, covering the dramatic colonial impact of 1940-60 until the present day. The state is examined from the point of view of social class as well as communalism, to explain the dominance of the ruling coalition over the 37 years since independence. The author argues that authoritarian-populism is the concept that best fits the apparent paradox of an enduring regime via the ballot box, and the extensive restrictions on the scope of democracy, particularly through the repressive apparatus of detention without trial. The underlying theme is a critique and explanation of Malaysia's human rights record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National socio-economic development planning in Peninsular Malaysia is guided by the New Development strategy which resulted from the race-riots of May 1969 - events which were themselves clear indication that Peninsular Malaysia lacked national unity. The New Development Strategy has two components, Rukun Negsira (the National Ideology) and the New Economic Policy. The New Economic Policy aims to eradicate poverty and to restructure the socio-economic system in order to remove the inter-communal imbalances which were identified as the root causes of disharmony in the country. In this way it is hoped to create national unity in Peninsular Malaysia. A major weapon in the government's bid to implement the New Economic Policy is the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA). Since its establishment in 1956, FELDA has become not merely Peninsular Malaysia's foremost land developer, but has been raised by the Malaysian government to premier status among agencies implementing national socio-economic development policy.;The present study assesses the ability of the Federal Land Development Authority to comply with the Malaysian government's requirement that through land development FELDA be a major contributor to the attainment of national unity in Peninsular Malaysia. The assessment is undertaken by first analysing the reasons why planning failed to create national unity before 1969, and - in the light of the knowledge gained from this analysis - by then assessing FELDA's qualifications for meeting the responsibilities placed upon it by the post-1969 Plans designed to rectify the situation of socio-economic imbalance. The study considers the nature of inter-communal imbalance in Peninsular Malaysia, and indicates the political and other constraints which govern planning approaches. The study concludes by presenting the main findings regarding the Federal Land Development Authority's ability to contribute to the attainment of national unity in Peninsular Malaysia, with particular attention paid to FELDA's ability to contribute to the implementation of the government's New Economic Policy in the Malay-dominated rural areas.

Book excerpt: Care Relations in Southeast Asia: The Family and Beyond, edited by Patcharawalai Wongboonsin and Jo-Pei Tan, examines the care relations and transactions within and beyond the family network across three middle-income Southeast Asian countries, namely the Federation of Malaysia, the Kingdom of Thailand and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the national and sub-national level. On the national level, changes and continuity in care relations along the changing demographic, socio-economic and political contexts of each country are addressed. On the sub-national level, the complex dimensions of care relations are analyzed by looking at the attitude towards and practice of elderly and child care within, between and beyond the family system. These regional analyses are based on merged data of three most recent family surveys in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok Metropolis, and Hanoi. Alternative and innovative policy recommendations for current and future challenges are also offered. Contains contributions by: Asmidawati Ashari, Ki Soo Eun, Tengku Aizan Hamid, Rahimah Ibrahim, Thuttai Keeratipongpaiboon, Nguyen Huu Minh, Pataporn Sukontamarn, Jo-Pei Tan, Tran Thi Minh Thi, Kua Wongboonsin and Patcharawalai Wongboonsin
