Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Badiou and American Modernist Poetics explores the correspondence between Alain Badiou's thinking on art and that of the canonical modernists T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, and Ezra Pound. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the text engages with themes of the void, mastery, and place present in both modernist poetry and in Badiou’s philosophy. Through an examination of classic modernist texts, Cameron MacKenzie reveals that where Badiou hopes to go, the modernists have already been.

Book excerpt: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has a growing evidence base that supports its efficacy in treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders and has been adapted for use with more complicated patient populations and for different stages of psychiatric illness. As the first Massachusetts General Hospital-branded text on the subject, this is a cutting-edge tool that is unlike any current book on CBT. The authors for this handbook are among the world’s foremost experts in their specialty area and are actively engaged in dynamic research evaluating the efficacy of CBT as well as identifying mechanisms of action for this treatment. This title provides in-depth coverage of the historical background of the development of CBT, a comprehensive review of relevant outcomes data, a survey of mechanisms by which CBT exerts its effect, and, most importantly, a take away “tool box” of CBT strategies and techniques that can be immediately implemented in clinicians’ practices. The Massachussetts General Hospital Handbook of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy reaches and improves the clinical practices of a broad base of front line mental health practitioners, including psychiatrists and therapists.

Book excerpt: Sainsbury and Tye present a new theory, 'originalism', which provides natural, simple solutions to puzzles about thought that have troubled philosophers for centuries. They argue that concepts are to be individuated by their origin, rather than epistemically or semantically. Although thought is special, no special mystery attaches to its nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propositions are routinely invoked by philosophers, linguists, logicians, and other theorists engaged in the study of meaning, communication, and the mind. To investigate the nature of propositions is to investigate the very nature of our connection to each other, and to the world around us. As one of the only volumes of its kind, The Routledge Handbook of Propositions provides a comprehensive overview of the philosophy of propositions, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Comprising 33 original chapters by an international team of scholars, the volume addresses both traditional and emerging questions concerning the nature of propositions, and our capacity to engage with them in thought and in communication. The chapters are clearly organized into the following three sections: I. Foundational Issues in the Theory of Propositions II. Historical Theories of Propositions III. Contemporary Theories of Propositions Essential reading for philosophers of language and mind, and for those working in neighboring areas, The Routledge Handbook of Propositions is suitable for upper-level undergraduate study, as well as graduate and professional research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The likeness of form between Chinese and English sentences,” writes the American Sinologist Ernest Fenollosa around 1906, “renders translation from one to the other exceptionally easy.” If Babel Had a Form asks not if his claim may be true, but what its phantasmic surprise may yet do. In twentieth-century intersections of China and Asia with the United States, translations did more than communicate meaning across politicized and racializing differences of language and nation. Transpacific translation breached the regulative protocols that created those very differences of human value and cultural meaning. The result, Tze-Yin Teo argues, saw translators cleaving to the sounds and shapes of poetry to imagine a translingual “likeness of form” but not of meaning or kind. At stake in this form without meaning is a startling new task of equivalence. As a concept, equivalence has been rejected for its colonizing epistemology of value, naming a broken promise of translation and false premise of comparison. Yet the writers studied in this book veered from those ways of knowing to theorize a poetic equivalence: negating the colonial foundations of the concept, they ignited aporias of meaning into flashpoints for a radical literary translation. The book’s transpacific readings glean those forms of equivalence from the writing of Fenollosa, the vernacular experiments of Boxer Scholar Hu Shi, the trilingual musings of Shanghai-born Los Angeles novelist Eileen Chang, the minor work of the Bay Area Korean American transmedial artist Theresa Cha, and a post-Tiananmen elegy by the exiled dissident Yang Lian. The conclusion returns to the deconstructive genealogy of recent debates on translation and untranslatability, displacing the axiom of radical alterity for a no less radical equivalence that remains—pace Fenollosa—far from easy or exceptional. Ultimately, If Babel Had a Form illuminates the demanding force of even the slightest sameness entangled in the translator’s work of remaking our differences.

Book excerpt: In a book that itself exemplifies the dialogic scholarship it proposes, Kay Halasek reconceives composition studies from a Bakhtinian perspective, focusing on both the discipline's theoretical assumptions and its pedagogies. Framing her discussions at every level of the discipline--theoretical, historical, pedagogical--Halasek provides an overview of portions of the Bakhtinian canon relevant to composition studies, explores the implications of Mikhail Bakhtin's work in the teaching of writing and for current debates about the role of theory in composition studies, and provides a model of scholarship that strives to maintain dialogic balance between practice and theory, between composition studies and Bakhtinian thought. Halasek's study ranges broadly across the field of composition, painting in wide strokes a new picture of the discipline, focusing on the finer details of the rhetorical situation, and teasing out the implications of Bakhtinian thought for classroom practice by examining the nature of critical reading and writing, the efficacy and ethics of academic discourse, student resistance, and critical and conflict pedagogy. The book ends by setting out a pedagogy of possibility, what Halasek terms elsewhere a "post-critical pedagogy" that redefines and redirects current discussions of home versus academic literacies and discourses.
