Book excerpt: As part of a study of characteristics of the poor and the ultra-poor at nutritional risks, this paper reviews the evidence on participation rates, duration of work, and rewards per period worked - both as they interact to form average labor income and as they vary in time and space. Labor markets impose interlocking and cumulative disadvantage on the poor: crude participation rates are reduced by high dependency ratios, illness, and other factors; as the poor increasingly rely on wage income, labor duration is cut by unemployment; and wage rates are kept low for the poor by lack of skills, of mobility, and of good health. These disadvantages interact, and fluctuations in participation rates, in employment, and in wage rates are positively correlated and worse for the poor. Other features over-represented among the poor are also correlated with lower participation rates, labor duration, and/or employment. The evidence indicates that redistribution of access to physical and human assets may be needed to enable poor people to compete fairly, even in perfect labor markets.

Book excerpt: As a result of recent political reforms, Myanmar has the opportunity to enact major policy changes to reinvigorate its agriculture sector. In this context, Myanmar’s rubber sector has the potential to become an even greater source of export earnings and rural household incomes, but there are major challenges related to low rubber productivity and poor rubber quality. Using data from the Mon State Rural Household Survey (MSRHS) conducted from May to June 2015, as well as qualitative data collected from rubber producer focus groups and other interviews with rubber producers, traders, and processors, this paper describes the cost structure of rubber production in Mon State. We then estimate smallholder production costs and the profitability of smallholder rubber production under various alternative yield and price scenarios. The results suggest that if the weaknesses hindering the profitability of the rubber sector are not addressed, the rubber sector will likely stagnate. Moreover, in the absence of a major increase in world prices (substantially above the 2000–2016 average), new rubber investments will not be profitable without major improvements in yield and quality. Further, increasing only yields or only quality, or only improving the institutional environment, will not result in positive returns on investment for smallholders; reforms are needed in all three areas. If these weaknesses are addressed, however, Myanmar’s new investments will be profitable and Myanmar could become an important rubber producer and exporter on the world stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing demand for more sustainable materials has led to increased research on the properties of natural rubber. Chemistry, Manufacture and Applications of Natural Rubber summarizes this research and its significance for the industrial applications of natural rubber. Chapters in part one explore the properties and processing of natural rubber, including the biosynthesis of natural rubber in different rubber-producing species, chemical modification of natural rubber for improved performance, and the effect of strain-induced crystallization on the physical properties of natural rubber. Further chapters highlight hydrophobic and hydrophilic silica-filled cross-linked natural rubber and computer simulation of network formation in natural rubber. Part two focusses on applications of natural rubber, including eco-friendly bio-composites using natural rubber matrices and reinforcements, soft bio-composites from natural rubber and marine products, natural rubber for the tire industry, the application of epoxidized natural rubber in pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), and the use of natural rubber for vibration isolation and earthquake protection of structures. Finally, chapters in part three consider environmental and safety issues associated with natural rubber, including improving the sustainable development of natural rubber, the recycling of natural and synthetic isoprene rubbers and of sulfur cross-linked natural rubber, and recent research on natural rubber latex allergy. Chemistry, Manufacture and Applications of Natural Rubber is a comprehensive resource for academics, chemists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, and other professionals in the rubber industry, as well as those industries, including automotive, civil, and medical engineering, using natural rubber products. An updated review with systematic and comprehensive coverage of natural rubbers Covers a broad range of topics, including the chemistry, processing, sustainability, and applications of natural rubbers Coverage of the best international research, including key experts from Asia, the United States, South America, and Europe

Book excerpt: This publication is the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) annual review on food and agricultural commodities and trade for the year 1999-2000. The review is presented in two parts. The first part provides a synthesis of the key developments in agricultural commodity markets including the export earnings derived from agricultural commodities, import expenditures by developing countries for staple foods and commodity prices. It reviews factors influencing commodity markets, such as the global economic outlook and developments in international trade policy. The second part considers the current world market situation and short term outlook for 21 individual food and agricultural commodities or commodity groups. These considerations focus on current market developments.

As the telecommunications sector evolves toward a more competitive environment in which the private actors become the main players, it is essential to develop policies that will reduce the disparities between urban and rural telecommunications services. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the technical and financial parameters that have to be considered in formulating such policies. It presents an array of options for commercial operation of rural telecommunications and challenges the general perception that rural telecommunications services are unprofitable. It demonstrates that services can be economically delivered to rural areas at affordable prices while simultaneously providing reasonable financial returns to investors. A planning tool kit is included that assists in the design of the various options.
