Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Problem in South Africa The great native and labour problem has been troubling South Africa with more or less insistence since the days Of native slave under the Boer. The deprivation of the mei-ema service Of the nigger brought trouble Very early to the British Administration, and in fact may be deemed the beginning of that bad feeling between the two races which has continued since. Characteristically, the first Sign of the fatal breach between Briton and Boer was the direct result Of missionary interference in native treat ment; we say characteristically without reflection on the present missionary policy, but in the sense that the London Missionary Society of that period exercised the functions of the Aborigines' Protection Society Of today. As recorded by the historian Mr. Theal, in his Progress of South ca in the Century, ' the first. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the South African Native Since the Union, Native affairs have become a national and not a provincial concern, and the five years during which, and until otherwise determined by Parliament, Native education was to be a matter of provincial administration, have elapsed, so that the time seems to be peculiarly appro priate for a consideration of the relation of education towards the whole problem, for it is in the proper education of the Native that the greatest h0pe for the settlement of the Native Question lies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Man's Place in South Africa We of to-day are rightly proud of our freedom from the sour superstitions and religious animosities of the past, but these hindrances to progress and general happiness were only dispelled by the light of scientific thought and clear reasoning. Let us then bring to bear that same blessed light upon our present enquiry into the reasons, real or fancied, for those prejudices of race and colour which we still retain, for it is only by removing the misconceptions and false notions that obscure our view that we can come to a clear understanding of the many complex issues that make up the great Native problem of Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on South Africa But certain parts of this book have appeared in periodicals and have caused, no doubt owing to the frag mentary nature of their publication, some misconceptions which it might be worth while setting right. It has been stated by some kindly critic that the subject of this little book was a valuable history of South Africa, while another has suggested my calling it The History of the Boer. Nothing has been farther from my thought than the writing of any history. In a far different manner I Should have equipped myself had it been my intention to do so. Dr. Ea in his has collected as carefully and dealt as ably with the mere historical inci dents of the last two hundred years as it is possible for any one person, in the course of one life, and from one point of view, to do. Still less, as has been suggested, was it my intention to write a homily on South African problems and people. This little book is something far less pretentious, and wholly different. Born in South Africa, I felt from my childhood a wish to set down what I thought and felt about my native land. After I was grown Up, but in my youth, I went to Europe for ten years, living in London but visiting the Continent continually. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the radical argument that the nation-state was born of colonialism, this book calls us to rethink political violence and reimagine political community beyond majorities and minorities. In this genealogy of political modernity, Mahmood Mamdani argues that the nation-state and the colonial state created each other. In case after case around the globe—from the New World to South Africa, Israel to Germany to Sudan—the colonial state and the nation-state have been mutually constructed through the politicization of a religious or ethnic majority at the expense of an equally manufactured minority. The model emerged in North America, where genocide and internment on reservations created both a permanent native underclass and the physical and ideological spaces in which new immigrant identities crystallized as a settler nation. In Europe, this template would be used by the Nazis to address the Jewish Question, and after the fall of the Third Reich, by the Allies to redraw the boundaries of Eastern Europe’s nation-states, cleansing them of their minorities. After Nuremberg the template was used to preserve the idea of the Jews as a separate nation. By establishing Israel through the minoritization of Palestinian Arabs, Zionist settlers followed the North American example. The result has been another cycle of violence. Neither Settler nor Native offers a vision for arresting this historical process. Mamdani rejects the “criminal” solution attempted at Nuremberg, which held individual perpetrators responsible without questioning Nazism as a political project and thus the violence of the nation-state itself. Instead, political violence demands political solutions: not criminal justice for perpetrators but a rethinking of the political community for all survivors—victims, perpetrators, bystanders, beneficiaries—based on common residence and the commitment to build a common future without the permanent political identities of settler and native. Mamdani points to the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa as an unfinished project, seeking a state without a nation.
