Download or read book The Nation's Got Talent written by Rachel Philip and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the construction of the idea of the ‘talented’ student in India and its relationship to the discourse of the ‘nation’. It historically situates the evolution of the National Science Talent Search (NSTS) and its subsequent avatar, the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), with state-sponsored ideas and practices of ‘nation-building’. It also delves into how individuals who wrote and cleared the examination inhabit this identity of the ‘talented’. Drawing on policy documents and institutional literature of over 50 years as well as interviews with past winners of the NSTS/NTSE, including a Nobel laureate, this book is a major intervention in the field of South Asian studies, public policy, and education.

Book Synopsis The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Changes Everything by : Maria Shriver
Download or read book The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Changes Everything written by Maria Shriver and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we look back over the 20th century and try to understand what's happened to workers and their families and the challenges they now face, the movement of women out of the home and into paid employment stands out as a unique and powerful transformation. At one level, everything has changed. And yet so much more change is needed. Even though we were all witness to the shift of women becoming equal or primary breadwinners over many years, these changes seem somehow to have snuck up on us. As a result, our policy landscape remains stuck in an idealized past, where the typical family was composed of a married-for-life couple with a full-time breadwinner and full-time homemaker who raised the children herself. This report contemplates what a new America should look like after we finally embrace this important new dynamic in our lives and the changes in our homes and businesses it has caused. It examines every institution, including: Health Care--Health care and child care must be overhauled to accommodate the 24 hour work day. Education--With more women acting as equal or primary breadwinners in the family, it is critical that there are resources to provide better and up to date education for all ages. Business--Research shows that corporations with more women in the board room are more successful than those with all male boards. With that in mind, the report puts forth many recommendations to allow businesses to get the best out of all employees by thinking outside the box of old fashioned models in scheduling, benefits, and role playing. Media--The disconnect between how women are portrayed in the media and reality is as present as ever; although women are now portrayed as thin, well dressed, successful stars in their careers and home lives, the reality is that women still struggle to have it all. The report highlights the many disparities that still exist and calls for specific changes. Faith--Many religious institutions have resisted the integration of women into the higher ranks of spirituality, and many feel that it is to the religious community's detriment. Marriage--the dynamics of marriage have changed as gender roles have become less clear and there is more flexibility in the division of responsibilities. Yet no one is sure what the rules are any more. This section, which includes candid essays from men about fatherhood and masculinity, addresses the tricky balancing act that many couples are engaged in. The report will be the cornerstone of the 2009 Women's Conference held in California October 26-27th of 2009. The Women's Conference is the nation's premier forum for women and is hosted by California First Lady Maria Shriver and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Conference, also known as The California Governor and First Lady's Conference on Women, has grown from a California initiative for working professionals into an international network of women from all walks of life, backgrounds and perspectives, and a life-changing experience for the thousands of women who have attended. The mission of The Women's Conference is to inspire, empower and educate women to be Architects of Change in their own lives and in the lives of others.
Book Synopsis The Power of Attitude Capital by : Marc Lamont
Download or read book The Power of Attitude Capital written by Marc Lamont and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies continually evaluate their assets, both tangible and intangible. During these evaluations, an extremely important point is often forgotten: that point is that attitude capital is one of the most important assets. The value of all other assets might be in danger if the level of attitude capital is not high enough. And putting the assets of a company in danger can’t be the purpose of being in business, because companies are always looking for security and growth. The success of companies is determined by the sum of the individual success of their employees. And the success of employees can be increased dramatically by developing and further increasing the attitude capital. But the development of the right attitude leads not only to success; it also leads to maximal realization potential. For employees, attitude capital is extremely important, more important than knowledge, experience, skills, and talent, because attitude determines how all those elements are transformed into success. In case of lack of the right attitude, the value of knowledge, experience, skills, and talent becomes small to irrelevant. As a result, the chances of being successful are minimal to nonexistent. The right attitude of an employee not only increases his or her individual success but also contributes to the attitude capital of the company and, as a result, to the success of the company. Starters and start-up companies often think they have a unique idea. But often those ideas are not so unique, or they can be imitated very easily. What really will create the difference is the level of attitude capital those starters have from the beginning. Just having passion is not enough. The Power of Attitude Capital is for managers, for employees, and for starters, not only to read, but also to use on a daily basis as a guide to increase attitude capital. The Power of Attitude Capital does not look at what is going wrong in organizations or at an individual level. It rather seeks to motivate organizations and individuals to work on the opportunities that they have to increase success.

Book Synopsis Building A Learning Nation by : Chris Pratt
Download or read book Building A Learning Nation written by Chris Pratt and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Building a Learning Nation, Chris Pratt and Allison Chin use powerful evidence to expose serious fault lines in the English learning and education system. The authors show that the result of a thirty-year political consensus on education has been growing child mental ill-health, high levels of educational underachievement, major skill shortages, and a crisis in the retention and recruitment of teachers. Increasing numbers of children leading dysfunctional home lives, coupled with ineffective government education and skills policies over decades, are identified as the principal causes. The book explains how these problems make a defining contribution to the country's sluggish economic performance and deep social divisions. Above all else, Building a Learning National provides a compelling case for change. Unlike other critiques of contemporary education it provides a well thought out, workable alternative: promoting lifelong learning for all; tackling underachievement; supporting families; radically changing the conditions within which schools operate; and developing the skills the nation needs.

Book Synopsis Central and Eastern European Media in Comparative Perspective by : John Downey
Download or read book Central and Eastern European Media in Comparative Perspective written by John Downey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appearing more than twenty years after the revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe, this book could not have come at a more appropriate time; a time to take stock not only of the changes but also the continuities in media systems of the region since 1989. To what extent are media institutions still controlled by political forces? To what extent are media markets operating in Central and Eastern Europe? Do media systems in Central and Eastern Europe resemble media systems in other parts of Europe? The answers to these questions are not the same for each country in the region. Their experience is not homogeneous. An international line up of distinguished experts and emerging scholars methodically examine the different economic, political, cultural, and transnational factors affecting developments in media systems across Central and Eastern Europe. Whereas earlier works in the media system tradition have, in the main, adopted the political framework of comparative politics, the authors argue that media systems are also cultural and economic institutions and there are other critical variables that might explain certain outcomes better. Topics discussed range from political economy to gender inequality to the study of ethno-cultural diversity. This unmatched volume gives you the unique opportunity to study the growing field of comparative media analysis across Eastern and Western Europe. A valuable resource that goes beyond the field of media and cultural analysis which media scholars as well as to area specialists should not go without!

Book Synopsis One Nation Britain by : Richard Carr
Download or read book One Nation Britain written by Richard Carr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is One Nation politics? What has it been, and what should be it be today? Since Ed Miliband’s speech at the 2012 Labour Party Conference these questions have been much asked, but not so often clearly answered. Outlining the historical context, and offering suggestions for contemporary thinkers, this comprehensive overview shows how all three major UK political parties have made a significant contribution to the One Nation agenda over the past century and a half. Re-asserting the One Nation tradition inherent in interventionist liberals like Keynes and Lloyd George, it encourages us to look beyond reformist high Tory politicians such as Benjamin Disraeli and sketches out precedents for current politicians in areas such as house building, local government, the living wage, a financial transaction tax, and the welfare state. Providing an accessible guide to the One Nation ideal, Richard Carr gives those of all political persuasions some food for thought whilst pointing the way for future policy making.

Book Synopsis Popular Music, Cultural Politics and Music Education in China by : Wai-Chung Ho
Download or read book Popular Music, Cultural Politics and Music Education in China written by Wai-Chung Ho and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While attention has been paid to various aspects of music education in China, to date no single publication has systematically addressed the complex interplay of sociopolitical transformations underlying the development of popular music and music education in the multilevel culture of China. Before the implementation of the new curriculum reforms in China at the beginning of the twenty-first century, there was neither Chinese nor Western popular music in textbook materials. Popular culture had long been prohibited in school music education by China’s strong revolutionary orientation, which feared ‘spiritual pollution’ by Western cultures. However, since the early twenty-first century, education reform has attempted to help students deal with experiences in their daily lives and has officially included learning the canon of popular music in the music curriculum. In relation to this topic, this book analyses how social transformation and cultural politics have affected community relations and the transmission of popular music through school music education. Ho presents music and music education as sociopolitical constructions of nationalism and globalization. Moreover, how popular music is received in national and global contexts and how it affects the construction of social and musical meanings in school music education, as well as the reformation of music education in mainland China, is discussed. Based on the perspectives of school music teachers and students, the findings of the empirical studies in this book address the power and potential use of popular music in school music education as a producer and reproducer of cultural politics in the music curriculum in the mainland.
