This book was released on 1999 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 10 percent of the sediment underlying U.S. lakes, rivers, and bays is sufficiently contaminated with toxic chemicals to pose potential risks. In 1990, EPA was requested to create a national program to address contaminated sediments. In 1997, EPA completed "The Incidence and Severity of Sediment Contamination in Surface Waters of the United States," a report to Congress. In April 1998, EPA released the "Contaminated Sediment Management Strategy" (CSMS). The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) Project N1-96-02, "Follow the Development and Analyze the Impact of the Federal Guidelines for Sediment Management," was awarded to accomplish the following: trace the development of the EPA's CSMS and other sediment management-related activities, identify their impacts on the shipbuilding and repair industry, and develop a "Contaminated Sediment Management Guide for NSRP Shipyards." The Management Guide includes 5 appendices that are accessioned separately (Appendix 1: Index of Documents Related to Sediment Management, Appendix 2: Shipyard Survey, Appendix 3: Assessment Technologies, Appendix 4: Removal Technologies, and Appendix 5: Treatment Technologies). This document, Appendix 3, briefly reviews the environmental regulations relating to contaminated sediments and current sediment assessment tools. It also contains a 24-page chapter that describes procedures for collecting sediment samples for an integrated sediment assessment (physical, chemical, and biological). Topics discussed include the sediment sampling vessel; field positioning methods; sediment sampling procedures; field processing of sediment samples for physical and chemical analyses, benthic community analyses, and toxicity testing; and sediment characterization by remote sensing. Basic procedures for the physical and chemical characterization of sediments also are included.

Book excerpt: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 10 percent of the sediment underlying U.S. lakes, rivers, and bays is sufficiently contaminated with toxic chemicals to pose potential risks. EPA began documenting the extent and severity of sediment contamination through surveys conducted in 1983 and 1987. The surveys found that heavy metals and metalloids, PCBs, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most frequently reported contaminants in sediments. In 1990, EPA was requested to create a national program to address contaminated sediments. Each description includes the manufacturer, technology type, country of origin, how the system works, technical specifications, limitations, costs, manufacturer address and contact information, vendor addresses and contact information, and an illustration or photograph.

Book excerpt: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 10 percent of the sediment underlying U.S. lakes, rivers, and bays is sufficiently contaminated with toxic chemicals to pose potential risks. These toxic chemicals can kill the aquatic organisms that live in those waters or impair the health of people and wildlife that eat contaminated fish. EPA began documenting the extent and severity of sediment contamination through surveys conducted in 1983 and 1987. The surveys found that heavy metals and metalloids (e.g., arsenic), PCBs, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most frequently reported contaminants in sediments. In 1990, EPA was requested to create a national program to address contaminated sediments. In 1997, EPA completed "The Incidence and Severity of Sediment Contamination in Surface Waters of the United States," a report to Congress. This Management Guide is divided into four sections: I. Contaminated Sediment and Shipyard Operations; II. Risk Management; III. Assessment, Removal, and Treatment Technologies; and IV. Case Studies. The guide includes 5 appendices that are accessioned separately (Appendix 1: Index of Documents Related to Sediment Management, Appendix 2: Shipyard Survey, Appendix 3: Assessment Technologies, Appendix 4: Removal Technologies, and Appendix 5: Treatment Technologies).

They can have major economic impacts when controversies over risks and costs of sediment management interfere with needs to dredge major ports. Contaminated Sediments in Ports and Waterways examines management and technology issues and provides guidance that will help officials make timely decisions and use technologies effectively. The book includes recommendations with a view toward improving decision making, developing cost-effective technologies, and promoting the successful completion of cleanup projects. The volume assesses the state of practice and research and development status of both short-term and longer-term remediation methods. The committee provides a conceptual overview for risk-based contaminated sediment management that can be used to develop plans that address complex technological, political, and legal issues and the interests of various stakeholders. The book emphasizes the need for proper assessment of conditions at sediment sites and adequate control of contamination sources.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help engineers and scientists better understand contaminated sediment sites and identify and design remedial approaches that are more efficient and effective. Contaminated sediment management is a difficult and costly exercise that is rarely addressed with easily identified and implemented remedies. It is hoped that this book can help identify and implement management approaches that provide an optimal, if not entirely satisfactory, solution to sediment contaminant problems.
