This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 28 April 2021, the Indonesian government, under President Joko Widodo, dissolved the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristek-Dikti). Since then, the management of higher education has been taken over by the Ministry of Education and Culture, while research and innovation are now the responsibility of the National Research and Innovation Agency (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, or BRIN). Based on Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Nos. 33 and 78 of 2021, various research institutes, such as LIPI, BATAN, LAPAN, and BPPT, and research agencies in some ministries have been or will be merged into BRIN, making it a “super-government agency” with an “overarching” role. With an Rp26 trillion budget allocated by the government for research per year and with a large number of researchers, BRIN is expected to boost national research and innovation and help the country catch up with countries such as Singapore and South Korea. BRIN, however, faces some serious challenges. It is not related to budget, infrastructure, or human resources, but to the research ecosystem and research culture of Indonesia. Technocratism, which has been restricting research in the country, will be its first challenge. Politicization of research institutions as indicated by the involvement of political parties in research supervision is another issue. Achieving an environment that makes good and healthy research possible built around an effective system of funding, academic rewards, and a vibrant academic community will be the third challenge. If BRIN manages to overcome these challenges sufficiently, it will be in a good position to enhance the capacity and competence of Indonesian researchers as the foundation for an advanced Indonesia by 2045.

The National Research and Innovation Agency (Acronymized in Bahasa as BRIN, Badan Riset and Inovasi Nasional), the Republic of Indonesia was launched in 2021 and has been the only one of Indonesia authorized research institution since. The Agency embodies throughout department and non-department research bodies in Indonesia and answers and thus responsible directly to the President of Indonesia. Despite its juvenile age, BRIN is in a tight competition with urgencies of untangling unresolved issues in various aspects in collective life as a nation and a state spanning socioeconomic and culture to medicine and its translational derivatives. To function as effectively as expected, BRIN has launched 12 research organizations with each is accountable for a specific research field as reflected by the expertise of the pertinent researchers. Among those, Research Organization for Health was established as an answer to the major challenge of overcoming national burdens which are holistically captured as the roadmaps of SDG’s Indonesia where Health stands specially as the top three priority and regarded as Good Health-Wellbeing. It is clear that what have been produced through long chain of processes in the research chambers must be driven forward and translated accordingly to reach downstream utilizations in such a way that the good health and well-being are reachable in any levels. As to manifesting these goals into realization, knowledge sharing is deemed to be a plausible vehicle. This enables disseminations of most current research projects related to health across research institution, regionally or globally. Therefore, we see the need to organize our very first international conference that is, further, set as one of our annual events with contemporary umbrella themes. We welcome researchers, scholars, and practitioners in health and health-related fields to share their insightful research results in our conference. The general objective of BRIN’s 1st International Conference for Health (ICHR) is to facilitate dissemination and exchange of most recent progresses made across research institutions and to promote prospectus multi-nationals and or multi-institutional collaborations to achieve the good-health and well-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the new Indonesian capital city, Nusantara, planning is being anticipated as “representing national identity,” “a model city,” or “a gift to the world,” and many other extraordinary labels. This book examines the reality of an ongoing developmental transformation of the Nusantara beyond those labels. It approaches its assemblage of humans, their works (plans, documents, policies, and others), non-human objects (biodiversity, landscape, geography, physical infrastructure, buildings, and public spaces), processes, social relationships, social infrastructures, and others. It is organized into three themes—mimicry, friction, and resonance. The mimicry illustrates the similarities (and differences) between Nusantara and other capital cities in urban narratives, imageries, and forms. The friction studies how Nusantara moves actors who do not always agree, processes that do not always align or collaboration between diverse contradicting groups that intersect. The resonance observes how Nusantara resonates with, yet communicates its voice toward, the world. The three concepts (originated from geography, anthropology, and sociology) frame the analytics of the various contributions of local and foreign scientists from multiple disciplines. Overall, the book recommends “Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara” (Nusantara capital city authority) on the current experimentation and implementation of the urban vision and provides a reference for social scientists to study Nusantara. And more broadly, the book offers the current socio-spatial practices of capital city-making in Asia that are valuable for the region.

Book excerpt: Knowledge System Development: Insights from Indonesia and International Applications illustrates how knowledge systems work in the evidence-based policy making process and the dynamics of different actors in the ecosystem. Applying the Knowledge System Model 2.0 in Indonesia and in selected international case studies, it explores key issues and dynamics in the knowledge-to-policy process in Indonesia and offers important insights for application in other country contexts. Written from the unique vantage point of knowledge system actors themselves in cooperation with development practitioners and researchers, the book captures efforts to clarify the roles of different actors in the knowledge system and how they interacted to influence policy. When the actors and institutions in the knowledge system interact and challenge each other to articulate and commit to a shared purpose, it is easier to navigate the inherent tensions between technical solutions and political objectives to advance the reform agenda. Intermediaries in the knowledge system can play an important role in facilitating the interactions between these actors and institutions.

This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are inequalities in global knowledge production in communication outlets, cultural practices, and governance problems. Under this symbiotic relationship, they reinforce the cultural ideas, values, and governance systems operating in the Western countries as an ideal and role model for the Global South countries. Media is regarded as the agent of change for communication and cultural values. Indigenous knowledge production and dissemination is an essential feature to get a better insight into Global South countries. Likewise, dewesternizing and demystifying societal culture and governance issues are pertinent in this age of information. The Handbook of Research on Deconstructing Culture and Communication in the Global South focuses on local production practices keeping in view the local needs of communication outlets and societal and cultural sensitivities. This Indigenous knowledge would provide deeper and richer insights into the problems and sensitivities of Global South countries. To achieve this end, this book adopts a broader approach encompassing development issues, democratic values, digitalization practices, gender equality issues, and more. Covering topics such as biocultural activism, language ideology, and religiocentrism, this major reference work is a valuable resource for graduate students, sociologists, government officials, students and educators of higher education, librarians, development organization leaders, religious scholars, policymakers, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents the state-of-the-art environmental governance research and practices in Indonesia. It offers a wide scope, covering different sectors (e.g., forestry, mining) and geographical landscapes (e.g., inland and coastal areas). This book engages with existing theories and frameworks, including Earth System Governance, Adaptive and Interactive Governance, among others to trigger a debate regarding the operationalization of such concepts, which are mostly developed for the Global North context. It is also our ambition to incorporate more empirical knowledge from local contexts to indicate research gaps and future directions for environmental governance research agenda to be more diverse, inclusive, and facilitate the incorporation of inter-and transdisciplinary knowledge. This book will be useful for researchers, students, practitioners, and policymakers who are interested in the field of environmental governance, especially in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the countries with the fastest-growing economies in Asia. Indonesia is rich in natural resources but also suffers from overexploitation and environmental threats exacerbated by climate and human pressures. Along with the growing global ambitions for achieving sustainable development and capacity to adapt to current and future threats, including climate change impacts and disaster risk, Indonesia's commitments to balance development while safeguarding a good environmental status are also increasing. The challenge is on how to govern complex and systemic natural, social and governance systems while adhering to the principle of equity and justice? As it will require more than traditional hierarchical modes of governance and current regulatory instruments (i.e., law and regulations). This is an open access book.
