Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Church of Sweden I think that I may expect that most readers of this book will be aware, in a general way, of the circumstances which have led to its being written. But, as memories are short and historical accuracy is important, I will describe them as simply as possible. One of the most remarkable features of the Lambeth Conference of 1908 was the presence at one of its meetings of Dr. Henry William Tottie, Bishop of Kalmar, who bore a Latin letter from the Archbishop of Upsala (Dr. J. A. Ekman), dated 20th June of that year, which contained the following sentences: - "We rejoice that you Anglican bishops have for some time had in view the binding together of your Church and ours in some sort of alliance. I would ask that you should deliberate as to the points and the method of such an alliance with Henry William Tottie, Bishop of Kalmar, my beloved colleague, who, with your kind permission and under the orders of our most gracious King, is about to come to the council which you are soon to hold." Bishop Tottie also addressed the conference, on which he made a remarkable impression by his fine presence, his dignified bearing and his sympathetic and intelligent attitude. At the same time the conference received a report of the committee "on re-union and inter-communion" (of which I had the honour to be chairman), which contained a chapter on the Scandinavian Churches, in which it dealt particularly with the Church in Sweden. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of Sweden and the Anglican Communion The following papers are submitted to the Episcopate and others, as evidence bearing upon the Form, Intention, and Continuance of Holy Orders in the Swedish National Church. Opinions heretofore published seem to have been based upon one or another of the various forms, and never upon them all. I have tried to make all the actually material evidence accessible in fair English, having more regard, however, to accuracy than to elegance, and feeling that a double rendering of a phrase or word here or there would be no loss, if both renderings were fair. The Lambeth Commission which has visited Sweden may conclude its labors by a Report to the Arch bishop oi Canterbury Within the near future. But as the Swedish Church has only just appointed a Standing Commission on the sub jcet, it may be presumed that the Commission may continue in activity for some time to come, and report to the Lambeth Conference proposed for 1918. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Olavus Petri: The Church Reformer of Sweden By God's grace alone are we justified and have eternal life, when in humble faith we behold Jesus, the Lamb of God, and follow Him. Thus we have cause also to cherish in grateful remembrance those of His servants who have preached His gospel in its purity to our fathers and to us. Hence it behooves us as a Lutheran people, for the better observance of their doctrines and precepts, to keep a steady eye on our great teacher Martin Luther at all times, and to give second place in our esteem to that foremost champion of Church Reformation in our Swedish fatherland - Olavus Petri. In remembrance of our studies in Church History and Pastoral Theology, please accept, dear brethren, this guide to the life and teachings of the Swedish Reformer, Olavus Petri, "preacher of the Word of God." Brief as it is, it has been drawn from the best of historic sources. To Mr. Ernst W. Olson, for his services in rendering the manuscript into English, my grateful acknowledgment is due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Pictures From Swedish Church History The religious spirit of Ansgar was very early molded for his future vocation by certain dreams, occasioned partly through his peculiar bent of mind and partly by his environment. One night during his first years in the cloister he dreamed that he himself was in a dismal marsh, but nearby lay a pleasant plain, where he saw ap proaching him a company of holy women clad in white and among them his own mother. One of them, whom he took for the Virgin Mary, asked him: My son, would you like to come to your mother? When he had replied affirmatively to that question, the Virgin Mary said to him: If you wish to be one of our company, you must not indulge in vanities and childish pranks, for we will not tolerate vanity and idleness, and whosoever finds pleasure in such things cannot be in our com pany. So deep was the impression of this dream on Ansgar's mind that he withdrew from child ish folly, and at the age of twelve years became an ascetic of the order of St. Augustine. But in spite of his prayers, reading and singing, his ascetic zeal languished, and he found no peace for his troubled soul. This depression reached its depth in 814, when he was informed of the death of Charlemagne, whom he had seen shortly before in imperial power and glory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protestantism in Eastern Middle Europe The cornerstone to the written language and literature of the Esthonians and the Letts was laid by Lutheran parsons, who had to serve bilingually, german-esthonian or german-lettish. It was particularly Gotthard Kettler, from 1559 to 1562 the last Master of the Teutonic Order in Livonia, and Duke of Courland after the partition of Livonia, who promoted the religious instruction of the Letts in their own mother tongue. Supported by the Poles, the Counter Reformation tried to gain influence in Livonia: The Jakobi Church in Riga was made Catholic again; the Jesuits started their counter reformational activity from 1583 on. Violent dispute-s arise in Rig-a between the Evangelical camp, led by Hermann Samson, and the Jesuits. Poland intervenes in favour of Catholicism and things take on dangerous forms for the Evangelical population and Hermann Samson, who is indicted by the Poles. The dangerous consequences are, however, evaded, when Gustav Adolf conquers Riga in 1621. Already under Gotthard Kettler an exemplary establishment of Evangelical church life had been undertaken in Courland; during the Swedish times a similar basis for an evangelical-lutheran church life is built in Esthonia (1561 - 1710) and in Livonia (1621 Sol-id legal grounds were provided for the organisation and the material possessions of the church, as well as for the position of the clergy. These legal provisions remained valid even after Esthonia and Livonia were put under Russian rule. Starting in Germany, the pietistic movement made itself impressively notice-able in the Baltic States, favoured to some degree by direct contact, such as existed between the Livonian General Superintendent Johann Fischer and Philipp Jakob Spener. In particular the parsons, tutors and students, coming from Germany, brought with them pietistic thoughts and ideas. The pietistic influences increased noticeably after the Baltic provinces had passed into Russian possession. During the twenties and thirties of the 18th century the Baltic States came into contact also with the pious movement that emanated from the Herrnhut Unity of Brethren. Count Zinzendorf stayed in Livonia and Esthonia in 1736. The Unity of Brethren and the national church were on friendly terms until 1832, when a new churdi law curbed the activity of the Unity of Brethren. The following decades brought an increasingly sharp dispute, that was conducted by the national church with a view to church unity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive monograph on Swedish modernist architect Sigurd Lewerentz. Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) is one of the most highly revered--as well as one of the most heavily mythologized--protagonists of modern European architecture. Arguably Sweden's most distinguished modernist, he is more influential for architects around the world today than he was during his lifetime. Countless architecture lovers from around the world visit his buildings. Stockholm's woodland cemetery Skogskyrkogården, his most significant contribution to landscape design, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This authoritative new monograph on Sigurd Lewerentz is based on extensive research undertaken at ArkDes, Sweden's national center for architecture and design, where his archive and personal library are kept. It features a wealth of drawings and sketches, designs for furniture and interiors, model photographs, and more from his estate, most of which are published here for the first time, alongside new photographs of his realized buildings. Essays by leading experts explore Lewerentz's life and work, his legacy, and lasting significance from a contemporary perspective. This substantial, beautifully designed book offers the most comprehensive survey to date of Lewerentz's achievements in all fields of his multifaceted work.
