Book Synopsis The Mythic Artery by : Carolyn Kenny

Book excerpt: Music as therapy has been a part of life since the beginning of recorded history. Music therapy as a profession is about 30 years old. This book, in a sense, is paradox. It is an attempt to touch the essence of music in the fullness of all her healing powers, to describe that which cannot be described. This attempt is made in the spirit of appreciation and perhaps as a tribute to the mind of man. Words can never reach far enough into music to touch her essence. However, with the trying, our words will become more musical, our respect and wonder more absorbing, our understanding of music deeper. Allow your soul to join the massive mythic artery which carries us to the essence of life and the human spirit, connecting us to all of life, before and after, around and in us, from the first moment of creation through all the transformations beyond time and space. For this is the healing experience of music. - Foreword & preface.

Download or read book The Mythic Indian written by James Boucher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mythic Indian: The Native in French and Québécois Cultural Imaginaries charts a genealogy of French and Québécois visions of the Amerindian. Tracing an evolution of paradigms from the sixteenth century to present, it examines how the myths of the Noble, Ignoble, and Ecological Savage as well as the Vanishing Indian and Going Native inform a variety of discourses and ways of thinking about Québécois culture. By analyzing mythic depictions of the Native Figure that originate at first contacts, this book demonstrates that an inextricable link exists between discourses as disparate as literature and science. This book will be of interest to scholars in French Studies, Francophone Studies, Indigenous Studies, Hemispheric Studies, Social Sciences, and Literary Studies.

Book Synopsis Where Music Helps: Community Music Therapy in Action and Reflection by : Brynjulf Stige
Download or read book Where Music Helps: Community Music Therapy in Action and Reflection written by Brynjulf Stige and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how people may use music in ways that are helpful for them, especially in relation to a sense of wellbeing, belonging and participation. The central premise for the study is that help is not a decontextualized effect that music produces. The book contributes to the current discourse on music, culture and society and it is developed in dialogue with related areas of study, such as music sociology, ethnomusicology, community psychology and health promotion. Where Music Helps describes the emerging movement that has been labelled Community Music Therapy, and it presents ethnographically informed case studies of eight music projects (localized in England, Israel, Norway, and South Africa). The various chapters of the book portray "music's help" in action within a broad range of contexts; with individuals, groups and communities - all of whom have been challenged by illness or disability, social and cultural disadvantage or injustice. Music and musicing has helped these people find their voice (literally and metaphorically); to be welcomed and to welcome, to be accepted and to accept, to be together in different and better ways, to project alternative messages about themselves or their community and to connect with others beyond their immediate environment. The overriding theme that is explored is how music comes to afford things in concert with its environments, which may suggest a way of accounting for the role of music in music therapy without reducing music to a secondary role in relation to the "therapeutic," that is, being "just" a symbol of psychological states, a stimulus, or a text reflecting socio-cultural content.

This resulted in 12 papers and one commentary on the following topics: (A) Further development of a developmental ontology; (B) Common terminology for cerebral cortex and thalamus; (C) White matter tracts; and (D) Neuron types. The suggestions made to improve the TNA will be considered in the next version of the TNA. Neuroanatomical terminology should remain an actively ongoing endeavor and concerns all using this nomenclature, whether in Latin, English or other languages.
Book Synopsis Supportive Care in Cancer Patients by : Hans-Jörg Senn
Download or read book Supportive Care in Cancer Patients written by Hans-Jörg Senn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium on supportive care in cancer patients, which took place in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on February 18-21, 1987, wel comed renowned experts in the field and more than 600 partici pants from 25 countries with the aim of stimulating discussion on how to improve our professional skills and personal attitudes to ward cancer patients in all stages of their disease. Why did we or ganize such a symposium on supportive care in cancer patients? Recent decades have witnessed remarkable success in cancer treat ment, and we have learned how to cure a finite number of neoplas tic diseases. Some malignant tumors that previously entailed high fatality rates, such as leukemias, lymphomas, and testicular can cers, can now be cured, even when at an advanced stage. Yet it seems to many that our struggle to improve results and to fight death from cancer has also imposed greater toxicity on patients. Conventional scientifically based oncology has only recently made adequate efforts to improve the subjective quality of life of cancer patients, for example through prophylaxis against emesis, nausea, and scalp hypothermia, pain control and the development of psy chosocial support structures. The search for less toxic and yet equally effective treatment measures has not been one of our pri mary goals in the past. Supportive care has always been part of nurses' professional aim, even though many have not known how best to offer it.
Book Synopsis Self-Transformation through Music by : Joanne Crandall
Download or read book Self-Transformation through Music written by Joanne Crandall and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 1986-09-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it that makes sound become music? "....sound, in and of itself, has no meaning; it is simply sound. It is descriptive or evocative of nothing more than what is present in the heart and mind of the listener." But for those who are open to it, able to respond to it, the power of music to influence us is extraordinary. And this mysterious quality of harmony reacts alike on the composer, the musician, and the listener. In this self-help book of theory and practical exercises, the author explains how we can put music to good use in our daily life; make it a part of our living experience; let it penetrate our soul so that we truly become One with the tones, rhythm, harmonics, the cadence of the music.

Book excerpt: This book explores the fusion of myth, history and geography which leads to ideas of primitivism, and looks at their construction, interpretation and consumption in Western culture. Contextualized by Susan Hiller's introductions to each section, discussions range from the origins of cultural colonialism to eurocentric ideas of primitive societies, including the use of primitive culture in constructing national identities, and the appropriation of primitivist imagery in modernist art. The result is a controversial critique of art theory, practice and politics, and a major enquiry into the history of primitivism and its implications for contemporary culture.
