Book excerpt: History and archaeology tell us that when our far ancestors began to settle in localized groups, they codified their lives and experiences, and formed a collective for mutual support. This proto-civilization would have arisen from each individual’s questions about the world, and their attempt to understand themselves and their place in the world. These groups, or tribes, evolved rules of conduct to facilitate communal living, and made a calendar for the group’s celebration of harvests, and other events upon which the group was utterly dependent. This process of social evolution is the origin of religion, and of a magical way of looking at Nature. Eventually, this developing worldview was also the origin of science, which is our investigation of Nature to understand something of what is happening around us, and to use this knowledge to ensure our survival in a violent, indifferent Universe. After all, science and religion seek to answer the same question: Why and how is the natural world the way it is? This book seeks to show how science evolved from religion and magic, in response to a need to understand Nature.

Book Synopsis The Human Eros by : Thomas M. Alexander
Download or read book The Human Eros written by Thomas M. Alexander and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these philosophical essays, a leading John Dewey scholar presents a new conceptual framework for exploring human experience as it relates to nature. The Human Eros explores themes in classical American philosophy, primarily the thought of John Dewey, but also that of Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Santayana, and Native American traditions. Using these works as a critical base, Thomas M. Alexander suggests that human beings have an inherent need to experience meaning and value, what he calls a “Human Eros.” Our various cultures are symbolic environments or “spiritual ecologies” within which the Human Eros seeks to thrive. This is how we inhabit the earth. Encircling and sustaining our cultural existence is nature, yet Western philosophy has not provided adequate conceptual models for thinking ecologically. Alexander introduces the idea of “eco-ontology” to explore ways in which this might be done, beginning with the primacy of Nature over Being but also including the recognition of possibility and potentiality as inherent aspects of existence. He argues for the centrality of Dewey’s thought to an effective ecological philosophy. Both “pragmatism” and “naturalism,” he shows, need to be contextualized within an emergentist, relational, nonreductive view of nature and an aesthetic, imaginative, nonreductive view of intelligence.

Download or read book The Absolute written by Daniel Guebel and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner.... Premio Municipal de la Novela 2021 Premio Nacional de Literatura Argentina 2018 Premio Literario de la Academia Argentina de Letras 2017 Best Novel Award by La Nación 2016 A provocative multigenerational exploration of creative genius, madness, and family relationships. With the ambition and density of style of Vladimir Nabokov or Olga Tokarczuk, this is a story both profound and handled with a light touch. The Absolute is a sprawling historical novel about the Deliuskin-Scriabin family, made up of six generations of geniuses and madmen. Beginning in the mid-18th century in Russia, across Europe and ending in late 20th-century Argentina, the characters’ lives play out in different branches of art, politics and science in such radical ways that they transform the world and its reality. The narrator’s ancestor, Frantisek Deliuskin, invents a new form of music in the 18th century; his son, Andrei Deliuskin, makes some marginal annotations to the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola that are later interpreted by Lenin as an instruction manual to carry out the Russian Revolution of 1917; Esau Deliuskin, following the course of his father, creates a socialist utopian society; and down through the generations to the narrator, whose creation takes him back in time and space to the moment of the Big Bang. The Absolute is a monumental work about the creation of art and about family, about spiritual traditions and about throwing oneself into the world not to capture life but to create it, in and through words. “This is a masterpiece at a time when masterpieces seem impossible and at the same time challenges the very idea of a masterpiece. … It’s the novel one should read if they want to know what an artist is.” —La Nación

Book Synopsis The Land of Light by : Hilton Hotema
Download or read book The Land of Light written by Hilton Hotema and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Land of Light, which was first published in 1959, Professor Hilton Hotema has correlated all of the various interpretations of the works on the Tarot into one harmonious whole. Hotema says a true decipherment of the Tarot Symbolism must conform to the principles of the Ageless Wisdom of the Ancient Masters as preserved in the symbology and allegory contained in the Christian Bible and in other ancient scriptures, otherwise the interpretation will fail to agree with the teachings of the Masters who originated and designed the Major Arcana. The 78 Tarot Cards are fully illustrated. The Ancient Tarot was the oldest Bible on earth, and an interpretation of its mysterious symbolism reveals the Cosmic Phenomena that was presented to the Neophyte in the Sacred Drama of the Initiation in the Ancient Mysteries which included the strangest mysteries of Life, such as Reincarnation, Resurrection and Eternal Life. Hotema with his penetrating pen and wisdom clearly shows you secrets you have not known before. “Hotema’s folios astound me with the information they reveal.”—T. P. McG., N.Y. “We consider Prof. Hotema one of the world’s greatest teachers.”—Grant E. Hockens, N.Y. “We are slowly and gradually led into the realm of genius, and shown the answers to many profound anthropological and psychological problems that have perplexed the best scholars for ages. It was left for the mind of Prof. Hotema to correlate and analyze all existing data, as well as to decode the symbols and allegories of the Ancient Masters, and to reach and explain the facts and conclusions which are of immense value to mankind, both new and in the future. The interpretation of the ancient Tarot symbolism is a great work, possibly his greatest [...]”—Wm. C. Lloyd, Burlington, N.C. “Hotema is a thinker far above the best scientists, for he is not afraid to oppose them and show where they are wrong.”—A. F., California

Book Synopsis MYSTICISM (Complete Edition) by : Evelyn Underhill
Download or read book MYSTICISM (Complete Edition) written by Evelyn Underhill and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The spirit of "Mysticism" is romantic, engaged, and theoretical rather than historical or scientific. Underhill has little use for theoretical explanations and the traditional religious experience, formal classifications or analysis. She dismisses William James' pioneering study, The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), and his "four marks of the mystic state" (ineffability, noetic quality, transcience, and passivity). Excerpt: "All men, at one time or another, have fallen in love with the veiled Isis whom they call Truth. With most, this has been a passing passion: they have early seen its hopelessness and turned to more practical things. But others remain all their lives the devout lovers of reality: though the manner of their love, the vision which they make to themselves of the beloved object varies enormously. Some see Truth as Dante saw Beatrice: an adorable yet intangible figure, found in this world yet revealing the next."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the dialogue between art and music with that of mystical currents at the turn of the twentieth century. The volume draws on the most current research from both art historians and musicologists to present an interdisciplinary approach to the study of mysticism’s historical importance. The chapters in this edited volume gauge the scope of different interpretations of mysticism and illuminate how an exchange between the sister arts unveil an underlying stream of metaphysical, supernatural, and spiritual ideas over the course of the century. Case studies include Charles Tournemire, Joseph Péladan, Erik Satie, Hilma af Klint, Jean Sibelius, František Kupka, and Wassily Kandinsky. The contributors’ unique theoretical perspectives and disciplinary methodologies offer expert insight on both the rewards and inevitable aesthetic complications that arise when one artform meets another. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, musicology, visual culture, and mysticism.
