Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Mystical Life In order to avoid a misunderstanding to which the very title of this work might lead, it cannot be too forcibly stated that the Mystical Life is not with any infallible certainty the outcome of our own personal effort, however rightly that effort may have been made. Let us suppose that a soul has realized all the proper conditions of recollection and generosity which we are about to describe, is it certain that the Mystical Life will result from such effort, as effect from cause? Certainly not; we shall presently hear the greatest mystical writers themselves declare that this life is the gift of God - a gift which He makes to whom He pleases, and when He pleases; we shall hear them affirm that it is absurd to suppose that we can ever hope to win this grace for ourselves by our personal industry. What, then, is man's part in this matter? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystical Life Two questions will arise at once in the minds of some readers Is there a Catholic Traditional Mysticism and if so, in what does it differ from any other mysticism? For, with many people, the conviction prevails, and is strongly rooted, that Mysticism is a relatively modern discovery, and was quite unknown to the mediaeval Doctors, let alone the Fathers of the Church and the Christians of the first centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mysticism and Modern Life The task, for the author, relates itself very closely to one in which he has been for some time engaged and to which his previous volumes have been devoted - the study of the nature of Personality. In pursuing such a study it is impossible to pass by the mystics with their rich contribution to the meaning of this most fundamental of realities. The gentle reader who does not care for the critical discussion of mysticism may omit Part II. The author deems this, however, to be a very essential part of the volume One does not like to be a fool, even a blessed fool, as a neighbor of mine remarks. Without a philosophy to justify him the mystic can hardly escape this suspicion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Now in a fully corrected edition, one of the true spiritual classics of the twentieth century. Published for the first time with an index and Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar’s afterword, this new English publication of Meditations on the Tarot is the landmark edition of one of the most important works of esoteric Christianity. Written anonymously and published posthumously, as was the author’s wish, the intention of this work is for the reader to find a relationship with the author in the spiritual dimensions of existence. The author wanted not to be thought of as a personality who lived from 1900 to 1973, but as a friend who is communicating with us from beyond the boundaries of ordinary life. Using the 22 major arcana of the tarot deck as a means to explore some of humanity’s most penetrating spiritual questions, Meditations on the Tarot has attracted an unprecedented range of praise from across the spiritual spectrum.

This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Underhill was a renowned pacifist and Christian mystic. Her writings on religion were famous in her day and still resonate right up to the present. This book was drawn and expanded from some talks Underhill gave in Oxford, in which she attempted to link psychology and spirituality. She also discusses the place of institutional religion and of spirituality in the context of wider society. As elsewhere in her writings she emphasises the wonder of incarnation and life. The Life of the Spirit and the Life of Today is certainly recommended for fans of Underhill, but any religious individual will find resonance in her writing and should certainly take the time to explore why she was so influential. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul the Mystic: A Study in Apostolic Experience A spiritual aim which led him frequently to stop short in an argument and make his appeal from logic to life. The movement of his mind was towards the centre. The truths which he valued, and upon which his spirit fed, were those which were mystical and vital. Out of the deep well of his mystical experience flows a stream which makes glad the city of God. At a time when there is a revival of interest in the subject of mysticism, a study of this neglected side of Paul's experience, and of the teaching which grew out of it, is certainly timely; and if reverently pursued it can hardly fail to lead to the deepening of the spiritual life. Book excerpt: Startling new archaeological discoveries and such groundbreaking cultural phenomena as The Da Vinci Code and The Passion of the Christ have sparked a renaissance in impassioned controversies about religion and the life of Christ. Now, Sylvia Browne, with the help of her spiritual guide, delivers the truth about Him, His teachings, and His works for God as she answers such provocative questions as: - Was there a virgin birth? - Was there a Star of Bethlehem? - What did Jesus do for the first 30 years of his life? - What really happened at the crucifixion? - Was he married? Was he divine? - Is a Jesus lineage a possibility? In Browne's own words, the answers may "rattle the cages" of her millions of readers-answers that could only have come from someone who has visited the afterlife.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Way: A Psychological Study in Christian Origins It is the object of this book to trace out that type of life, that peculiar quality of consciousness, which is called "mystical," from its earliest appearance within Christianity; to estimate, so far as is possible, the true character and origin of the Christian mystic, and define the qualities which differentiate him from those other mystics who have been evolved along other lines of spiritual development, Oriental, Neoplatonic, or Mahomedan. It is now acknowledged by many psychologists - amongst whom Leuba and Delacroix are of special importance, since their conclusions are entirely free from theological bias - that the Christian mystic does possess such differentiating characters; and represents, so far as the psychical nature of man is concerned, a genuine species apart. Leuba, indeed, does not hesitate to call him "one of the most amazing and profound variations of which the human race has yet been witness." This being so, his origin and real significance have surely a special importance for those interested in the spiritual evolution of humanity. We are still too often told that Christian mysticism is no integral part of Christianity: sometimes, even, that it represents an opposition to the primitive Christian ideal. Sometimes we are asked to believe that it originated from Neoplatonic influence; that Pagan blood runs in its veins, and that its genealogy goes back to Plotinus. Far from this being the case, all the doctrines and all the experiences characteristic of genuine Christian mysticism can be found in the New Testament; and I believe that its emergence as a definite type of spiritual life coincides with the emergence of Christianity itself, in the person of its Founder. Book excerpt: Spiritual Consciousness: Mysticism - The Nature and Development of Man's Spiritual Consciousness is a seminal book about Christian mysticism written by one of the most widely read authors on the subject, the ever popular Evelyn Underhill continues her trend of truly life-altering writings. Underhill has divided Mysticism into two parts. The first section of the book, "The Mystic Fact," serves as an introduction to Christian mysticism, tracing the history and nature of mysticism from theological and philosophical perspectives. A chapter is also included on mysticism and magic, a relationship that perhaps forms the most controversial aspect of mysticism. The second part of Underhill's book (dubbed "The Mystic Way") is the author's study of the process of mystical growth. This portion of the book can almost be read as a "how-to." For those seeking spiritual growth through Christian mysticism, it is this portion of the book that will be most valuable and potentially life altering. Mysticism remains one of the most heralded texts examining Christian mysticism. The reason for this is simple: Underhill's prose and clarity of voice are remarkable. The text is simple yet both illuminating and inspiring. Both the novice and the experienced follower will find tremendous value in this book. Spiritual Consciousness: Mysticism - The Nature and Development of Man's Spiritual Consciousness is perhaps the most well known book on the subject matter, and with good reason. It is a true accomplishment, and one that deserves to be read by anybody with a passing interest in mysticism. Underhill's book is highly recommended.
