Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Thesaurus, or Initiation in the Theoretical and Practical Secrets of Astral Truth and Occult Art The following pages contain the original chapter on the Magic Mirror, first published in December, 1897, by myself, in connection with a partner, in a work entitled Agrippa's Natural Magic - a reprint of the first of the three books of Occult Philosophy of Henry Cor helius Agrippa - which I edited and set up in type during the last quarter of that year. In January, 1899, the plates and copyright were purchased by Ernest Loomis, of Chicago, and I joined in the transfer of the copyright with the express understanding (in view of its moral ownership by the Brotherhood of Magic, and further known as the Royal Adepts of Mysticism) that Ishould continue in my right to publish the original chapter entitled, The Magic Mirror - A Message to Mystics, by Direction of the Brotherhood of Magic, containing full instructions on its make and use, the same embracing a prefatory page, made up of a, verse headed A Message from the Stars, under a zenith of light and dark stars. This ornamental constellation is symbolic of the Astral Brotherhood of Magic, and contains the hidden things mentioned in my preface to the book. Testimonial proof of the astral origin of the Mirror chapter is found in the wonderful story of these stars and the hidden things therein which we explain. The Message has been carefully revised and amended, and constitutes. With the exposition of its preliminary star constellation, an initiation in the practical secrets of the realm of mystic truth and art. The Symbol of the Cross - partly an exposition of the dedicatory page of Natural Magic (by courtesy of Mr. Loomis) - is an interesting study in symbolism. Book Synopsis The Symbolism of the Cross by : René Guénon
Download or read book The Symbolism of the Cross written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2001 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symbolism of the Cross is a major doctrinal study of the central symbol of Christianity from the standpoint of the universal metaphysical tradition, the 'perennial philosophy' as it is called in the West. As Guénon points out, the cross is one of the most universal of all symbols and is far from belonging to Christianity alone. Indeed, Christians have sometimes tended to lose sight of its symbolical significance and to regard it as no more than the sign of a historical event. By restoring to the cross its full spiritual value as a symbol, but without in any way detracting from its historical importance for Christianity, Guénon has performed a task of inestimable importance which perhaps only he, with his unrivalled knowledge of the symbolic languages of both East and West, was qualified to perform. Although The Symbolism of the Cross is one of Guénon's core texts on traditional metaphysics, written in precise, nearly 'geometrical' language, vivid symbols are necessarily pressed into service as reference points-how else could the mind ascend the ladder of analogy to pure intellection? Guénon applies these doctrines more concretely elsewhere in critiquing modernity in such works as The Crisis of the Modern World and The Reign of Quantity and the Signs of the Times, and invokes them also to help explain the nature of initiation and of initiatic organizations in such works as Perspectives on Initiation and Initiation and Spiritual Realization.

Book Synopsis Shadow of the Third Century by : Alvin Boyd Kuhn
Download or read book Shadow of the Third Century written by Alvin Boyd Kuhn and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shadow of the Third Century: A Revaluation of Christianity, first published in 1949, begins with the assertions that a true history of Christianity has never before been written and that the roots of the Christian religion lie in earlier religions and philosophies of the ancient world. The author, Alvin Boyd Kuhn, asserts that Christianity as we know it took the form it did due to a degeneration of knowledge rather than to an energization produced by a new release of light and truth into the world. In the ancient world, knowledge was commonly passed down by esoteric traditions, its inner meaning known only to the initiated. The Gospels, according to Kuhn, should therefore be understood as symbolic narratives rather than as history. Sacred scriptures are always written in a language of myth and symbol, and the Christian religion threw away and lost their true meaning when it mistranslated this language into alleged history instead of reading it as spiritual allegory. This literalism necessarily led to a religion antagonistic toward philosophy. Moreover, it produced a religion that failed to recognize its continuity with, and debt to, earlier esoteric schools. As evidence of this, Kuhn finds that many of the gospel stories and sayings have parallels in earlier works, in particular those of Egypt and Greece. The transformation of Jesus’ followers into Pauline Christians drew on these sources. Moreover, the misunderstanding of true Christianity led to the excesses of misguided asceticism. Overall, the book seeks to serve as a “clarion call to the modern world to return to the primitive Christianity which the founder of Christian theology, Augustine, proclaimed had been the true religion of all humanity.” With its many citations from earlier works, Shadow of the Third Century also serves as a bibliographic introduction to alternative histories of Christianity.
