Book excerpt: Hidden within the rising tide of Islamic puritanism and extremism in Pakistan there is another world of Islamic religiosity which does not look towards the Middle East for its religious identity but is instead rooted in the cultural beliefs of South Asia. Comprising traditions that have their roots in the antiquity of the Indus Valley Civilization, it finds expression in shrines of phallic offerings, sacred animals and sacred trees. In the backdrop of economic development and rising extremism, these shrines exist as an anomaly and are increasingly at risk of being eroded. Growing connectivity between rural and urban areas further threatens the distinctiveness of these shrines and religious traditions. In Search of Shiva documents these religious traditions and studies how they have survived over the years and are now adapting to the increasingly rigid religious climate in Pakistan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the sacred/secular opposition explain itself in the context of musical production? This volume traces this binary as it frames Western Classical music and Indian Classical music in the 18th and 19th centuries, laying the ground for a contemporary exploration of what is ostensibly sacred music in South Asia. Offering a potent critique of musicological knowledge-making, Virinder S. Kalra explores examples of South Asian musics in various domains and traverses a new cartography of music in which the sacred and the secular overlap. Drawing on examples which include Qawwali, kirtan and popular devotional genres, Sacred and Secular Musics offers new empirical material, as well as new insights into conceptualising religion and music, and the ways in which music performs sacredness and secularity across the contested India-Pakistan border in the region of Punjab. Through its deconstruction of the sacred/secular opposition, Sacred and Secular Musics explores the relationship of religion and music to wider questions of religion and politics. Its postcolonial approach brings Asia into the Western sacred/secular opposition, and provides a set of analytical tools - a language and range of theories - to allow further exploration of non-western religious music.

Book excerpt: I first met M.A Sheikh in the late nineteen seventies as my interest in music grew beyond that of mere appreciation. I was looking for people who could help in developing my taste further and on being recommended I went to visit M. A Sheikh who had an office in the basement of Radio Pakistan Lahore. With regular visits I came to know of the setting up of the Classical Music Cell and its dramatic downturn in fortune with the change of government. The Classical Music Research Cell had been shut down after martial law had been imposed in nineteen seventy seven as an unnecessary drain on the national expenditure. Since the hired premises had to be vacated the question remained as to what was to become of the music, manuscripts, books and some equipment which had been collected so assiduously in the past year. It was lugged from one premise to another till finally a more permanent place in the basement of the Lahore Radio Station was settled for. During this series of very grave crises a small team maneuvered to ward off all the palpable threats. These few individuals had as if almost vowed not to let the Cell be closed down or fall in UN deserving hands. Principally through M.A.Sheikh’s efforts it managed to survive. I gradually came to appreciate the work being done by M.A Sheikh who really toiled for years in conditions which were far from ideal to save the collection of recorded material and the many rare and invaluable manuscripts which had been collected over time. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies and analyzes the impact of the various ways in which local people are responding, taking stands, recapturing their culture, and saying 'stop' to the violent extremism that has manifested over the past decade (even longer) in Pakistan. Local groups throughout Pakistan are engaging in various kinds of social negotiations and actions to lessen the violence that has plagued the country since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan which let loose abarrage of violence that overflowed into its borders. In so many ways, Pakistanis are engaging in powerful actions that transform how people think about their own society, impeding extremists' rants while acting on 'envisioning alternative futures'. This book, hence, focuses on finding the sparks ofhope that local people are creating to counter violent extremism based on close ethnographic study of ground realities about not only what people are doing but why they are selecting these kinds of actions, how they are creating alternative narratives about culture and identity, and their vision of a future without violence. This book is also designed to celebrate what is flourishing in cultural performances, music, social activism, and the like in Pakistan today because of people's commitmentto take stands against extremism.
