Book excerpt: Excerpt from New American Music Reader, Vol. 4 Book No. 4 completes the series of the New American Music Readers. For Elementary and H igh Schools. - The methods of this book naturally follow those of the preceding numbers in the series, and the needs of the classes in the advanced grammar grades, namely, those of the seventh and eighth years, are fully met. It will be found also that the methods and material in the book are well adapted to work in high schools where a text-book is needed. The book has been two years in preparation, and the material has been drawn not only from the author 's actual experience in teaching, but also from the experience of many leading supervisors of music in this country and in Europe. An examination of Book No. 4 will show that needed reviews in keys, rhythms and other technical details have not been neglected, and it should be noted that examples are found in all the minor keys. Nevertheless it has been deemed wise, since the greater part of needed technical work has already been thoroughly developed in the preceding books of the series, to make this, the concluding volume, one that is particularly characterized as a book of song. The work in upper grammar grades, if the previous training has been properly done, may very well largely consist of the sight reading of songs songs of a character that will interest and stimulate the pupils. It is notorious that in these years interest is liable to fall off if the study is made too technical. Pupils enjoy good music, and no trouble is experienced in inducing them to sing if good music is presented to them. Great care should be taken to bring out aesthetic values and emotional quality in the interpretation of song. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music Reader, Number One This volume reviews briefly the work of volume one and proceeds to the mastery of more advanced expressions. The general plan of the teaching and the practice is the same as before; the original divisions of the subject being retained. Each chromatic and rhythmic expression is fully explained as pre sented, and the songs and part exercises are specially adapted to the previous teaching. The songs which appear at the close of the volume are for the most part common to the series, and are intended for use on occasions when all grades may be expected to take part. Some of these songs will necessarily be sung by rote in this grade. Each volume of this course of study from the second onward presents certain fundamental features as review; the intention being to enable a teacher who has not used the books from the beginning to become some what familiar with the plan of the work as a whole. This will explain the simplicity of certain exercises in the advanced volumes. The fact has been constantly in mind, that in taking up a new difficulty no form of pre scutation can be too simple. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music Primer The object of this work is to impart the power to read vocal music. The plan is similar in every respect to a graded series of literary readers. Music, in fact, is a language, and should be learned just as any other language is learned, by using it. As the philosophy of language, or gram mar, can only be taught when the language is well known, so the technical ities of music must come late in the course. Everything in this system tends to cultivate the power to do; yet a careful presentation of theoretic elements induces a growing independence on the part of the pupil from the beginning. Care is taken to make the pupil familiar with musical effects before they are named; for instance, the words major and minor are admitted only when the effects which these words represent are perfectly familiar to the ear. All non-musical and unscientific representations of music, such as diagrams, figures, circles, etc., are avoided. Experience proves that the full staff representation when properly presented is the simplest possible. Any representation to the eye of effects which are known only through the ear is of necessity purely arbitrary, there being no natural relation whatever between the thing and its sign. Hence the assumed superiority of some modern devices is purely imaginary. The songs are such as a child who has accomplished the preceding exercises can actually read, and are, therefore, of a thoroughly educational character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Milton the Elder and His Music In the embarrassing splendor of this company the elder Mil ton held a position that was far from humble. His work was rated, and printed, with the best. He was a genius in his Own right long before he had any children. That, at least, is the thesis of the present essay, a thesis which has emerged from a fresh examination of contemporary documents and from the pleasant labor of scoring and hearing all his music which is known to have survived, in print or in manuscript. More than half of it has hitherto been completely ignored. The story of his career, frag mentary and obscure as much of it is, brings us into contact with the characteristic intellectual color and humor of the age of Gloriana and James. An analysis of the music itself, ranging from the simple to the architecturally complicated and grandiose, from deep pathos and lamentation to the most winning frivolity, should dissipate the notion that a dabbling tinkerer or a dour puritan was here at work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beautiful Music All Around Us presents the extraordinarily rich backstories of thirteen performances captured on Library of Congress field recordings between 1934 and 1942 in locations reaching from Southern Appalachia to the Mississippi Delta and the Great Plains. Including the children's play song "Shortenin' Bread," the fiddle tune "Bonaparte's Retreat," the blues "Another Man Done Gone," and the spiritual "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down," these performances were recorded in kitchens and churches, on porches and in prisons, in hotel rooms and school auditoriums. Documented during the golden age of the Library of Congress recordings, they capture not only the words and tunes of traditional songs but also the sounds of life in which the performances were embedded: children laugh, neighbors comment, trucks pass by. Musician and researcher Stephen Wade sought out the performers on these recordings, their families, fellow musicians, and others who remembered them. He reconstructs the sights and sounds of the recording sessions themselves and how the music worked in all their lives. Some of these performers developed musical reputations beyond these field recordings, but for many, these tracks represent their only appearances on record: prisoners at the Arkansas State Penitentiary jumping on "the Library's recording machine" in a rendering of "Rock Island Line"; Ora Dell Graham being called away from the schoolyard to sing the jump-rope rhyme "Pullin' the Skiff"; Luther Strong shaking off a hungover night in jail and borrowing a fiddle to rip into "Glory in the Meetinghouse." Alongside loving and expert profiles of these performers and their locales and communities, Wade also untangles the histories of these iconic songs and tunes, tracing them through slave songs and spirituals, British and homegrown ballads, fiddle contests, gospel quartets, and labor laments. By exploring how these singers and instrumentalists exerted their own creativity on inherited forms, "amplifying tradition's gifts," Wade shows how a single artist can make a difference within a democracy. Reflecting decades of research and detective work, the profiles and abundant photos in The Beautiful Music All Around Us bring to life largely unheralded individuals--domestics, farm laborers, state prisoners, schoolchildren, cowboys, housewives and mothers, loggers and miners--whose music has become part of the wider American musical soundscape. The hardcover edition also includes an accompanying CD that presents these thirteen performances, songs and sounds of America in the 1930s and '40s.

Book excerpt: In Dan Zanes' House Party!, the Grammy Award-winning children's artist presents a huge collection of folk songs along with inspiration to start your own family band. Too often, new parents eager to share their love of music with their young children feel their options are limited to cuddly singing dinosaurs and well-meaning humans whose understanding of children’s music starts with “Kumbaya” and ends with “Puff the Magic Dragon.” For many sane adults, these choices are more abrasive than the most aggro noise-rock of their college years. Dan Zanes has spent the past 20 years creating a truly compelling body of children's music that music-loving parents can also get behind. A former 1980s indie rocker, Zanes' 13 children's albums have gained wide praise for their authentic arrangements and preservation of America's folk traditions. In Dan Zanes' House Party!, the Grammy Award–winning Zanes has curated a rich selection of folk songs that comprise an essential musical cross-section of the American experience and its multicultural, immigrant underpinnings. The selections include the standard songs we all know and love, along with folk classics. Each song is accompanied by a brief narrative on its historical context, followed by lyrics, notation, and chords. Among the songs you'll learn to play: "Erie Canal," "Pay Me My Money Down," "Titanic," "Waltzing Matilda," "The Farmer Is the One," "Wabash Cannonball," "Sloop John B.," "Old Joe Clark," "Skip to My Lou," "King Kong Kitchie," and "We Shall Not Be Moved." Dan Zanes' House Party! also includes informational sidebars throughout to give families the basics needed to pick up instruments and learn to more fully enjoy music as a family band. And in the back of the book, you'll find chord charts for guitar, ukele, and mandolin. More than just a collection of songs, Dan Zanes’ House Party! is part music book, part history lesson, and a work that all families can enjoy—together.
