Book Synopsis Cosmic Rays at Earth by : P.K.F. Grieder
Download or read book Cosmic Rays at Earth written by P.K.F. Grieder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-07-27 with total page 1117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912 Victor Franz Hess made the revolutionary discovery that ionizing radiation is incident upon the Earth from outer space. He showed with ground-based and balloon-borne detectors that the intensity of the radiation did not change significantly between day and night. Consequently, the sun could not be regarded as the sources of this radiation and the question of its origin remained unanswered. Today, almost one hundred years later the question of the origin of the cosmic radiation still remains a mystery.Hess' discovery has given an enormous impetus to large areas of science, in particular to physics, and has played a major role in the formation of our current understanding of universal evolution. For example, the development of new fields of research such as elementary particle physics, modern astrophysics and cosmology are direct consequences of this discovery. Over the years the field of cosmic ray research has evolved in various directions: Firstly, the field of particle physics that was initiated by the discovery of many so-called elementary particles in the cosmic radiation. There is a strong trend from the accelerator physics community to reenter the field of cosmic ray physics, now under the name of astroparticle physics. Secondly, an important branch of cosmic ray physics that has rapidly evolved in conjunction with space exploration concerns the low energy portion of the cosmic ray spectrum. Thirdly, the branch of research that is concerned with the origin, acceleration and propagation of the cosmic radiation represents a great challenge for astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology. Presently very popular fields of research have rapidly evolved, such as high-energy gamma ray and neutrino astronomy. In addition, high-energy neutrino astronomy may soon initiate as a likely spin-off neutrino tomography of the Earth and thus open a unique new branch of geophysical research of the interior of the Earth. Finally, of considerable interest are the biological and medical aspects of the cosmic radiation because of it ionizing character and the inevitable irradiation to which we are exposed. This book is a reference manual for researchers and students of cosmic ray physics and associated fields and phenomena. It is not intended to be a tutorial. However, the book contains an adequate amount of background materials that its content should be useful to a broad community of scientists and professionals. The present book contains chiefly a data collection in compact form that covers the cosmic radiation in the vicinity of the Earth, in the Earth's atmosphere, at sea level and underground. Included are predominantly experimental but also theoretical data. In addition the book contains related data, definitions and important relations. The aim of this book is to offer the reader in a single volume a readily available comprehensive set of data that will save him the need of frequent time consuming literature searches.

Book Synopsis Muon Spectroscopy by : Stephen J. Blundell
Download or read book Muon Spectroscopy written by Stephen J. Blundell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muons, radioactive particles produced in accelerators, have emerged as an important tool to study problems in condensed matter physics and chemistry. Beams of muons with all their spins polarized can be used to investigate a variety of static and dynamic effects and hence to deduce properties concerning magnetism, superconductivity, molecular or chemical dynamics and a large number of other phenomena. The technique was originally the preserve of a few specialists located in particle physics laboratories. Today it is used by scientists from a very wide range of scientific backgrounds and interests. This modern, pedagogic introduction to muon spectroscopy is written with the beginner in the field in mind, but also aims to serve as a reference for more experienced researchers. The key principles are illustrated by numerous practical examples of the application of the technique to different areas of science and there are many worked examples and problems provided to test understanding. The book vividly demonstrates the power of the technique to extract important information in many different scientific contexts, all stemming, ultimately, from the exquisite magnetic sensitivity of the implanted muon spin.

Book Synopsis Cosmic Rays and Particle Physics by : Thomas K. Gaisser
Download or read book Cosmic Rays and Particle Physics written by Thomas K. Gaisser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years there has been marked growth in interest in the study of techniques of cosmic ray physics by astrophysicists and particle physicists. Cosmic radiation is important for the astrophysicist because in the farther reaches of the universe. For particle physicists, it provides the opportunity to study neutrinos and very high energy particles of galactic origin. More importantly, cosmic rays constitue the background, and in some cases possibly the signal, for the more exotic unconfirmed hypothesized particles such as monopoles and sparticles. Concentrating on the highest energy cosmic rays, this book describes where they originate, acquire energy, and interact, in accreting neutron stars, supernova remnants, in large-scale shock waves. It also describes their interactions in the atmosphere and in the earth, how they are studied in surface and very large underground detectors, and what they tell us.

Book Synopsis Muon and Muonium Chemistry by : D. C. Walker
Download or read book Muon and Muonium Chemistry written by D. C. Walker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers all aspects of the chemical behaviour of the muon - a rare, short-lived, elementary particle having a mass intermediate between that of the proton and the electron. Muons provide an exceptional opportunity to investigate basic chemical interactions, simply because they are so short-lived: they can thus be studied using the powerful technique of muon spin rotation, in which the yield, decay rate and identity of the muon in several different states is observed. Although originally of principal interest to nuclear and particle physicists, muons have recently become important as probes in solid-state physics and in all phases of chemistry. This book will be a valuable source of information for research scientists, university teachers and graduate students interested in physical chemistry, chemical physics and the application of nuclear science to the life sciences.
Book Synopsis Modern Muon Physics by : Igor I. Strakovsky
Download or read book Modern Muon Physics written by Igor I. Strakovsky and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Muon plays an increasingly important role in particle, nuclear, and atomic physics, and in applied research. The muon with the muon neutrino and strange and charm quarks create second generation of the Standard Model particles. Unique properties of muons, including its electric charge, mass, and lack of interaction via strong force made this particle a unique tool for discoveries of new elementary particles, including the Higgs boson, over last half a century. The prompt (by cascade transitions) and delayed (by weak muon capture) fission of heavy nuclei in muonic atoms became an important aspect of research. Use of muons as a probe particle to study various solid state samples recently developed in a separate branch of science. Muons can be used in the cold fusion for efficient energy production in the future. The studies of the processes beyond the Standard Model, the proton radius puzzle, the rare decays of the muon and its conversion into an electron and muonium into antimuonium, and hints of a difference in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from predicted by the Standard Model, have become hot research topics. Muons are proposed to be used in accelerators providing ultra high intensity neutrino beams which will be used for studies of neutrinos, including their oscillations, which could shed a light on matter-antimatter universe asymmetry as well as for "Higgs factories" where a large number of Higgs bosons can be produced for in depth understanding of this recently discovered particle. This book describes various aspects of modern physics involving muons"--
