Book excerpt: The basis for the Peacock TV series Teacup: An extraterrestrial bounty hunter turns a Southern community into its private hunting ground in “the ultimate horror novel” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). The West Texas desert towns of Inferno and Bordertown have been slowly dying. The Snake River isn’t the only thing that divides them. Racism and gang wars have turned the sun-scorched flatlands into a powder keg. If anything can unite them now, it’s the UFO that comes crashing through the clouds. It brings with it a young alien named Daufin, a fugitive who has taken human form. She knows the terror that awaits this planet—because it’s looking for her. Stinger is an alien bounty hunter with an infinite capacity for death and a devious plan to find Daufin. Entombing the region in an inescapable dome, Stinger unleashes a violent fury unknown to humankind. Now, the few remaining survivors must come together to protect Daufin, themselves, and the world beyond. From Robert McCammon, the New York Times–bestselling and Bram Stoker Award–winning author, Stinger is “one of the best suspense novels of recent years” (Science Fiction Chronicle). It has now been adapted into one of the most hotly anticipated horror series on television: Teacup, premiering on Peacock this October.

Book excerpt: In this epic fantasy from the acclaimed author of The Grey Bastards, a man and his fae allies confront Goblins seeking to restore their race to power. Locked in an eternal Autumn, Airlann, the Source Isle of Magic, is dying. Nearly a millennium earlier, the last of the Goblin Kings were assassinated. Now a fanatical army of Goblins known as the Red Caps are determined to bring their bloodline back to the throne via an heir whose identity is a deeply guarded secret. Padric, a human cast aside as cursed by his own people, travels alongside the alluring piskie Rosheen, his lifelong friend. As the Red Caps wage war, Padric and Rosheen find themselves in midst of the battle, having allied themselves with the unlikeliest of creatures: Deglan Loamtoes, a healer gnome whose cynicism is rivaled only by his quick wit, and Pocket, an orphaned changeling fostered by the avian Knights of the Valiant Spur. Soon this ragtag posse of wayfarers is confronting skin-changers, bloodthirsty marauders, and fire-crazed fanatics—determined to discover the true identity of the long-lost heir before the Red Caps release forces powerful enough to destroy Airlann once and for all. But is this band of unlikely heroes strong enough to stand against the descendant of the dreadful Goblin Kings? “An addictively readable—and undeniably cool—fantasy masterwork.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) on The Grey Bastards
Book Synopsis The Missing Season by : Gillian French
Download or read book The Missing Season written by Gillian French and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Edgar Award finalist Grit and The Lies They Tell comes a tense, atmospheric novel for fans of E. Lockhart and Marieke Nijkamp, about friendship, truth, and the creeping fears that can’t be outrun. Whenever another kid goes missing in October, the kids in the old factory town of Pender know what is really behind it: a monster out in the marshes that they call the Mumbler. That’s what Clara’s new crew tells her when she moves to town. Bree and Sage, who take her under their wing. Spirited Trace, who has taken the lead on this year’s Halloween prank war. And magnetic Kincaid, whose devil-may-care attitude and air of mystery are impossible for Clara to resist. Clara doesn’t actually believe in the Mumbler—not like Kinkaid does. But as Halloween gets closer and tensions build in the town, it’s hard to shake the feeling that there really is something dark and dangerous in Pender. Lurking in the shadows. Waiting to bring the stories to life.
Book Synopsis Blog Love Omega Glee by : Wred Fright
Download or read book Blog Love Omega Glee written by Wred Fright and published by Frighty LLC. This book was released on 2012-07-19 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two bloggers fall in love while the world falls apart in Blog Love Omega Glee, a comedic story set in 2012, with each chapter taking place on a different day counting down to the end of the Mayan calendar on 21 December 2012, when the world either ends or continues on much the same as before. The two central characters are Jake Falls, a twenty-five-year-old unemployed man living with his parents who spends most of his time blogging about pro wrestling, and Francine Apple, a twenty-nine-year-old barely employed woman who has dropped out of the American Dream to blog about various conspiracy theories. Other characters abound as well, including Jake's cats, family, and friends, and Francine's coworkers, housemates, and neighbors. The story is set in Cleaveland, a decaying industrial city in the northern part of the USA, and its suburbs on the shores of Lake Eerie. It's year 12 of a fascist regime, and a severed head named Dick with a soft drink vending machine for a body is president/dictator, but no one much notices because they're too busy watching television and obsessing over their personal lives to worry about wars overseas, the government swindling taxpayers, and the rich stuffing their already-stuffed pockets further with rapidly-depreciating currency. Some people find this worrisome, but most people just change the channel. Regardless, even though in many ways for the average person life is still better than ever before in the history of human existence since Eden, most people feel a vague sense of unease, as if the delicate stitching of society is about to come undone at any moment, pouring forth a centuries long buildup of too many human beings, anarchy in the streets, environmental collapse, and lots and lots of really bad coffee. Between existential dread, economic worries, presidential electioneering, electronic domineering, and large sweaty men in tights touching one another as entertainment, there's Blog Love Omega Glee! Blog Love Omega Glee was originally published on Wred Fright's Blog as a blognovel or a blovel! Unlike, most blognovels and blovels, this one actually was finished, instead of being abandoned. Since the story has four parts, depending on how you look at it, it's either one really long novel, or a series of four novels. After being serialized on the blog and as a zine to a few select zinesters Fright trades with, the novel was collected as an ebook. One fun way to read it is a chapter a day during the course of a year (especially a leap year like 2012 was), or go for reading all 230,000 words or so in one lump! The novel's been noted in American Pop Lit (who called Fright "an innovative writer of fun new pop lit--a pioneer in the fight to revive American literature"), Attacking The Demi-Puppets, Cleveland Scene, Cool Cleveland (who wrote, "and (perhaps best of all) it's set in 2012 in a city called 'Cleaveland' (not to be confused, wink-wink, with our city with the slightly different spelling)"--hmm . . . I wonder if there's a Cool Cleaveland email newsletter in the novel . . .), The Rumpus by author Mickey Hess (who blurbed "Goons and patriots, get ready! Wred Fright’s new novel scowls at your perfect sentences. There are gorgeous techniques and colorful dialogue, the book’s action, mood, the author himself. There are things this novelist should be allowed to do that the rest of us are not."), Try This At Home by novelist Eddie Willson (who wrote, "After experimenting with multiple narrators in his novel The Pornographic Flabbergasted Emus, Wred Fright continues to develop his fiction in inventive ways. Here he’s posting a new novel in blog form. Set in the near future the regularly updated narrative charts the lives of wrestling-fixated loser Jake and militant waitress Francine. I’ve got some catching up to do but this is addictive stuff. Here and elsewhere Wred’s big strength is in characterization-–he’s got a real gift for getting you rooting for characters whose lives have got a bit bent out of shape. This tale’s going to be taking up my lunch breaks for the foreseeable future. Highly recommended."), The Whirliblog (who wrote that "It's tastier than Cap'n Crunk!"), Xerography Debt, and Zine World.
Download or read book Bits of Life written by Bitsy Bowman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day, while Bitsy and I were living in Wichita, Kansas, I came home for lunch to find a round, black and charred spot on the kitchen floor. Of course, I knew what had happened. Bitsy was a smoker then and she had emptied a hot ash tray into the kitchen waste basket, caught it on fire and burned the floor but being a considerate husband I gave her an opportunity to explain by asking What happened? She calmly stated Would you believe spontaneous combustion? I replied, You dont even know what that means. She replied, Well, I know its not my fault! To be both quick witted and funny are great traits to have especially when your vocation is writing. I have selected several of her columns for this book which will bring back memories to you, fill you with much laughter and perhaps a few tears, but most of all you will be entertained. Sam S. Bowman

Download or read book Tales of Jonathan written by Keith Nicol and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-02-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the advice of his English teacher, Paul Garner uses his part in a school play to embark upon a journey of discovery. By attempting to rewrite and redirect the story, he finds that his quest assumes reality. Not only do the characters escape direction by his pen but he loses distinction between himself, as author, and the character he plays. He becomes lost within the narrative, which moves in ways not of his choosing. However, the bond between him and the one he seeks is never broken. Whether from dream and memory, part of reality or the image of a goddess, she is always the inspiration for the play. Yet where did the play originate? Jonathan is an orphan; whether he be the dead foster brother of Bethany, the imaginary friend of Daniel or the fostered child of the reclusive Aunt Sheelagh, his tales transform loss into a search for love in all worlds and beyond. Tales of Jonathan is a self exploration of one persons mind, culminating in his discovery of truth in the deepest chamber. By transcending the restrictions of rationality, he finds a new reality. Dreams which have no end are no longer dreams. His previous loss and grief have become the fiction; the tales of Jonathan are now his reality. It is a story about the power of faith and love. I believe that with reflective thought, the reader will find it a challenging and rewarding book. Nicol addresses the slippery substance of reality from every angle, repeating the main story and many of its key phrases in slightly different contexts each time. While the intellectual exercise is fascinating, it is easy to lose the thread of the story in all of the rearranging, which makes for some challenging reading. --CLARION As Nicol invites readers into dreams and memories cobbled into a Mbius strip, theres little sense of whats real and whats not. The first of seven segments suggests that the novel will concern schoolboy Paul Garner and the enchanting Bethany Dean, who tragically dies young. --KIRKUS There is a certain charm to Nicols prose, and he captures difficult emotions (grief, awe, adoration) with notable skill. --BLUEINK
Download or read book Job-Boj written by Jorge Guzman and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in alternating voices, Jorge Guzman's JOB BOJ is a captivating novel that explores the progression from melancholy to happiness, or vice versa. The delicate interplay between a light-hearted narrator and a brooding, introspective one draws the reader in to question identity. Are they the same man? Two different periods from the same life? Or are they two separate people? The reader is left to judge. While the novel is a superb masterclass in structure and innovation, JOB BOJ is a "rich and absorbing entertainment."
