Book excerpt: Experience the Thrill of Touring Europe by Motorhome Motorhome Europe is the latest practical guide from Jason and Julie Buckley, authors of the ourtour.co.uk motorhome travel blog and the best-selling Motorhome Touring Handbook. Over the years we've travelled tens of thousands of miles across Europe, visiting more than 30 countries and sleeping in over 1,000 places in our campervan and motorhomes. We've had experiences beyond our dreams, which we'd love you to enjoy too. Motorhome Europe distils our experiences into a 330 page, full colour guide. It's packed with inspiration, tips and practical guidance to help you embark on a new adventure abroad, or to expand your horizons to more distant countries across the continent. Which Countries are Covered? Focusing entirely on motorhome travel outside Britain, Motorhome Europe profiles the following countries in the EU and beyond. Those closer to Britain are covered in the most detail. Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Who is Motorhome Europe For? Motorhome Europe is for anyone with the urge to travel in their own motorhome or campervan, outside Britain in mainland Europe and Ireland. If you’re heading abroad for the first-time, the book will ensure you’re fully prepared. Run through the checklists and descriptions included and you'll be confident you're ready for the coming adventure. If this isn't your first trip abroad, the book offers reminders of what to pack, plus ideas and suggestions for new places to tour. We take you from Norway's North Cape all the way south to Andalusia in Spain, Algarve in Portugal, Sicily and the Peloponnese in Greece. What’s Inside Motorhome Europe? The book is arranged into four parts: Part 1 paints a picture of Europe from a motorhome travel perspective. The types of places there are to stay (campsites, aires, wild camping, restaurants, vineyards, farms & home camping) and ideas for filling your days on the road. Part 2 offers guidance on itinerary planning, where to go and when. Whether you’ve a few days, weeks, months or even years to dedicate to travel. We take you right across the continent, profiling countries from a motorhome travel perspective, how to get there, access toll roads and low emission zones and find places to stay. Colour photos are included to bring the highlights of Europe to life. Part 3 digs down into the detail, providing checklists and practical advice on how to prepare yourselves, your van and your pets for travelling to the continent. Part 4 takes you out onto the road, discussing the practicalities of day-to-day life abroad, from using cross-Channel ferries and the Eurotunnel to driving on the right, buying diesel and using motorhome service points. In the unlikely event something goes awry, we've provided advice for handling problems such as breakdowns and accidents. Thanks for reading folks and happy travels! Book excerpt: This book is a wealth of information for all Americans wishing for their own RV. Delve into this detailed handbook covering a wide range of topics including buying, registering, keeping, and maintaining your motorhome, alongside the more exciting bits of where to go and how to choose your campsites, along with many photos and diagrams. Colleen and her engineer husband, Alan, have travelled extensively in the last 4 years through the USA in a 30' motorhome. So what? Lots of people are traveling like that in America ... but not many Europeans! So for them at first it seemed an impossible thing to do but, with determination and the help of the internet, they solved the problems. Now they are able to spend two to three months, twice a year, meandering in their own time through rural America. Extraordinarily satisfying. Although an apparently expensive project, the fact that they spend most of their time "boondocking" (free camping in gorgeous places) makes the whole thing affordable. To keep the RV in a faraway storage facility, primed and ready for the next trip, took a great deal of head scratching and planning. This book is the product of their gathered experience: from maintenance of the RV to even fixing an Onan generator - it's all in there. Hopefully you will find it useful and maybe it will give you the incentive to try the same thing ... the joys of having time to "stop and stare" cannot be measured. Try it!Please note: The book was written for American residents. If you are not a resident then you will need more information on buying and owning an RV in the USA. You should buy instead our book American Motorhome Lifestyle Handbook for Europeans: A foreigner's Guide to Purchasing, Maintaining and Enjoying an American Motorhome/RV in the USA. All the extra information contained applies to anyone who is non-resident and wishes to own and travel in the USA in their own RV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Camping as a recreational activity entered into popular society over 100 years ago. It is widely accepted that Thomas Hiram Holding was one of the first proponents of the activity, which is gaining in popularity every year and will continue to do so, through the effects of the current economic climate. There are currently over 1.2 million people who use camping as their main holiday within the UK and this is set to grow in my opinion. Holding wrote the first Camper's Handbook in 1908. This book described to people, for the first time, the basics of camping. The knowledge required to write this book he learnt whilst traveling with a wagon train across the prairies of America. The journey, taken with his family in 1853 at the age of 9, was 1200 miles long, we can only marvel at the experiences he must have had. In 1887 he visited the highlands of Scotland whilst on a cruise and decided to camp from his canoe. Holding was also a keen cyclist and it was after a conversation with a friend he later embarked on what could have been the first bicycle camping trip which they took in Ireland. For this trip, Holding designed some easily portable camping equipment, embarking with 4 friends in the late 1800s. He wrote a book about this experience entitled 'Cycle and Camp in Connemara' (1898), the book has an open invitation for fellow enthusiasts to contact him, which led to the formation of Association of Cycle Campers in 1901. This very rare and now out of print book is a facsimile reprint and may contain small imperfections.
