Download or read book The Effect of Surge, Added Mass, and Unsteady Lift on the Motion of a Hydrofoil Boat in a Seaway written by Reuven Leopold and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the large amount of computations involved in solving the equations of motion of a hydrofoil craft in a seaway, various simplified methods have been used in the past. Most of the methods fol lowing aircraft motions analyses were neglecting surge and added mass. It is shown that surge has a large effect on the heave and pitch motions while added mass and unsteady lift do not have significant effect. Furthermore, a boat with fully submerged foils can, in fact, be controlled through regular and irregular waves in both ahead and following seas. A computer program enabling very rapid evaluation of the motions through various seaconditions was prepared for IBM 7090 computer and the results were displayed on the television scope attached to the computer. Repro ductions of the results are presented. (Author).

This book was released on 1959 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two 24-foot hydrofoil model test boats were designed and constructed on the basis of long term studies. The first boat known as High Pockets has a surface piercing hydrofoil system suitable for Froude Numbers below about 0.5. Additional conclusions based on High Pockets' tests are contained in this report. The second boat, known as High Tail, has an angle controlled fully submerged hydrofoil system suitable for Froude Numbers above about 0.5 is reported on herein. The functional form of the hydrofoil angle control was synthesized mathematically largely on the basis of zero Flying Draft Variance in long waves. This functional form is expressed by Specific Coupling Equations. Control parameters for the Specific Coupling Equations were selected to minimize the Hydrofoil Draft Increment for a given limiting vertical acceleration on the basis of a mathematical analysis of High Tail's vertical motions controlled in accordance with the Specific Coupling Equations while flying in idealized waves. Book Synopsis Deterministic Predictions of the Motions of a Hydrofoil Craft in Irregular Seas by : R. P. Bernicker

This book was released on 1964 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heave and pitch response time-histories of a fully wetted surface-piercing dihedral hydrofoil craft in irregular head seas was calculated from theoretical considerations, using the concept of the impulse response function. This function, which is the Fourier transform of the transfer function, was used in a convolution-type integral with the actual measured wave time-history to give a point-by-point deterministic prediction of the longitudinal motions. Comparison with experimental records indicates that the method yields a satisfactory approximation to the actual motion to a degree similar to that previously attained with surface ships and fully submerged bodies, and that it further substantiates the linearity of a hydrofoil craft-wave system. Book Synopsis Hullborne Hydrofoil Six-Degree-of-Freedom Motion Prediction and Computer Program - Zero Speed Case by :
Download or read book Hullborne Hydrofoil Six-Degree-of-Freedom Motion Prediction and Computer Program - Zero Speed Case written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modifications were made to motion prediction computer program for a hullborne hydrofoil in waves to include the zero speed case. The program can now be used to compute the six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) hullborne hydrofoil craft motions for a craft speed of zero as well as for a constant forward speed, less than the critical 'lift-off' speed, with arbitrary heading in regular waves. Basically, the program consists of the already existing 'DTNSRDC 6DOF Ship- Motions and Sea-Loads Computer Program' (AD-A008 335), which computes the motions of hulls in the displacement mode, with appropriate modifications to incorporate the effects of the submerged foil system on craft motions. Presented in this report are a discussion of the mathematical model for the zero craft speed case, input information pertaining to the hydrofoil system, and a discussion of the results. The Appendices present a listing of the program update cards and the subroutines pertaining to the foil system.

This book was released on 1965-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lloyd’s Register Technical Association (LRTA) was established in 1920 with the primary objective of sharing technical expertise and knowledge within Lloyd’s Register. Publications have consistently been released on a yearly basis, with a brief interruption between 1938 and 1946. These publications serve as a key reference point for best practices and were initially reserved for internal use to maximise LR’s competitive advantage. Today, the LRTA takes a fresh approach, focusing on collaboration by combining professional expertise from across LRF & Group to ensure a frequent output of fresh perspectives and relevant content. The LRTA has evolved into a Group-wide initiative that identifies, captures, and shares knowledge spanning various business streams and functions. To support this modern approach, the LRTA has adopted a new structure featuring representatives and senior governance across the business streams and the LR Foundation. The Lloyd's Register Technical Association Papers should be seen as historical documents representing earlier viewpoints and are not reflective of current thinking and perspectives by the current LR Technical Association.
Book Synopsis High-Speed Marine Craft by : Peter J. Mantle
Download or read book High-Speed Marine Craft written by Peter J. Mantle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the efforts to build a large naval vessel capable of traveling at one hundred knots. It is the first book to summarize this extensive work from historical and technical perspectives. It explores the unique principles and challenges in the design of high-speed marine craft. This volume explores different hull form concepts, requiring an understanding of the four forces affecting the lift and the drag of the craft. The four forces covered are hydrostatic (buoyancy), hydro-dynamic, aerostatic, and aerodynamic. This text will appeal to naval researchers, architects, graduate students and historians, as well as others generally interested in naval architecture and propulsion.

This book was released on 2006-01-09 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics of High-Speed Marine Vehicles, first published in 2006, discusses the three main categories of high-speed marine vehicles - vessels supported by submerged hulls, air cushions or foils. The wave environment, resistance, propulsion, seakeeping, sea loads and manoeuvring are extensively covered based on rational and simplified methods. Links to automatic control and structural mechanics are emphasized. A detailed description of waterjet propulsion is given and the effect of water depth on wash, resistance, sinkage and trim is discussed. Chapter topics include resistance and wash; slamming; air cushion-supported vessels, including a detailed discussion of wave-excited resonant oscillations in air cushion; and hydrofoil vessels. The book contains numerous illustrations, examples and exercises.
