Book excerpt: This collection documents the internal affairs, activities, and conservation concerns of a chapter which is based in Sacramento, but which includes most of northeastern California as well as the upper San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys. Because of the large geographical size of the chapter, much of the work takes place in regional groups and activity sections. This geographical region contains some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in California, much of it national forest lands. The chapter's conservation activities reflect concern over how these public lands will be utilized. Lake Tahoe Basin planning, ski resorts, use of all terrain vehicles, and evaluation of roadless areas for inclusion in wilderness are some of the issues documented in the second and largest series, Conservation Records. In addition to its Conservation Committee, the chapter continues to have an active Outing Committee. Activities include car camping, day hikes, knapsacking, and peak and gorge "scrambling".

Book excerpt: His name was Daniel Alexander Jacobi but his friends just called him Jac. He was the quintessential underachiever, a likeable ne'er-do-well who just couldn't seem to get his life together. After a life time of financial mismanagement, he'd wound broke and living pay cheque to pay cheque on a salary that never seemed to stretch far enough ... a situation he found increasingly frustrating, but one he couldn't find his way out of ... until one day on a back road, everything changed dramatically. With 40 million in $100.00 bills literally dropped in front of him and the mob and the police searching for him, he fought desperately to hide the money. Fear of having been seen by someone gripped his heart like an icy hand, as he struggled to try to come to grips with his new found wealth. This is the story of an unremarkable individual suddenly thrust into a terrifying situation which forced him to draw on a hidden reserve of courage and resolve in order to protect those he loved and the Mother Lode! Unwilling to defend himself, he discovered a will to kill if necessary to protect the money and the future of his loved ones.

Book excerpt: An illustrated highlight reel of more than 100 women in rap who have helped shape the genre and eschewed gender norms in the process The Motherlode highlights more than 100 women who have shaped the power, scope, and reach of rap music, including pioneers like Roxanne Shanté, game changers like Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott, and current reigning queens like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Lizzo—as well as everyone who came before, after, and in between. Some of these women were respected but not widely celebrated. Some are impossible not to know. Some of these women have stood on their own; others were forced into templates, compelled to stand beside men in big rap crews. Some have been trapped in a strange critical space between respected MC and object. They are characters, caricatures, lyricists, at times both feminine and explicit. This book profiles each of these women, their musical and career breakthroughs, and the ways in which they each helped change the culture of rap.
