Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother and the Child The mothers of today take far more intelligent care of their children than did the mothers of the past, and this is not because they love their children more but because the science of medicine, by establishing rules for child hygiene, has materially aided the mission of motherhood. Thus the treatment accorded the child has brought great change to the mission of motherhood. Above all, it has vitally transformed some of the principles, that is to say, some of the ideas as to the real influence that we may have on a child as he develops. Let us rapidly survey these transformations. What used to take place? Perhaps there are some who still remember having seen certain practices, considered a universal dogma at one time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of the Story in Religious Education Couldn't I please go downstairs and speak to mother? I want to tell her something. But mother said you could not come down tonight, I replied. I just want to come for a minute. Please ask mother to let me come for a minute. So I asked the mother, and her reply made me fear for the child, Yes, he can come for a minute, but it won't do a bit of good to ask me to stay. He has to be punished, and her face was little like that of the child. Then down he came, streaks of dirt on the little red face. Straight to his mother he went and look ing into her face, he said, She told me a nice story, and I am going to have a name like his. I am going to be Jimmie Standby too. And he went upstairs like a man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of the Mother Tongue in National Education The following pages contain an elaboration of some remarks which I designed to lay before the Meeting of the British Association in York at the beginning of last month. Various circumstances prevented me from carrying out my purpose, and I am therefore putting forth my views in their present form, in the hope that they may form a slight contribution to a subject which is occupying some attention at the present moment, and deserves to occupy more. I hope that even if prejudiced critic1sm be wholly hostile, both to the subject itself and the manner in which it is here dealt with, the suggestions herein contained may yet, at least, serve as the nucleus of a concrete discussion, from which some progress may result. The conscientious objector may in time modify his views; the serious and friendly critic will help on the cause. The great and almost the sole aim of the mother, to whom the, infancy of life is ne cessarily entrusted, is to keep the child out of the way of bodily injury, and to secure, by every means, immediate submission to her com mands. The authority which is thus preserved, is principally that of 'the passions. It oscillates between anger and indulgence: or, when neither the one nor the other of these may be employed, it leaves the infant uncontrolled, to adopt any mode of feeling or action, which the natural disposition may give life to, or circumstances suggest. When the parent is weary of the trouble which thus devolves upon her. She seeks relief, by sending her infant children to the re sidence of a dame, who is contented, for a small remuneration, to hold a contest with the passions of the young, and, by whatever means. Book excerpt: "We all have need to be trained to see, and to have our eyes opened before we can take in the joy that is meant for us in this beautiful life." Charlotte Mason ~~~~~~~ "Composition books and blank journals are readily available at every big box and corner store, available so inexpensively as to be common and ironic as we reach that digital dominion, the projected 'paperless culture.' Shall we despair the future of the notebook? Is the practice an anachronism in an age where one's thoughts and pictures, doings and strivings are so easily recorded on a smartphone or blog, and students in even the youngest classrooms are handed electronic tablets with textbooks loaded and worksheets at the ready? Or is there something indispensable in the keeping of notebooks without which human beings would be the poorer?" THE LIVING PAGE invites the reader to take a closer look in the timeless company of 19th century educator, Charlotte Mason.
