They are sites of both social encounter and social division and provide for their inhabitants “a sense of place”. This book explores the nature of Russian cities, outlining the role played by various Russian cities over time. It focuses on a range of cities including provincial cities, considering both physical, iconic, created cities, and also cities as represented in films, fiction and other writing. Book Synopsis Cabbage and Caviar by : Alison K. Smith
Download or read book Cabbage and Caviar written by Alison K. Smith and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When people think of Russian food, they generally think either of the opulent luxury of the tsarist aristocracy or of post-Soviet elites, signified above all by caviar, or on the other hand of poverty and hunger—of cabbage and potatoes and porridge. Both of these visions have a basis in reality, but both are incomplete. The history of food and drink in Russia includes fasts and feasts, scarcity and, for some, at least, abundance. It includes dishes that came out of the northern, forested regions and ones that incorporate foods from the wider Russian Empire and later from the Soviet Union. Cabbage and Caviar places Russian food and drink in the context of Russian history and shows off the incredible (and largely unknown) variety of Russian food.

Book Synopsis Recipes for Russia by : Alison K. Smith
Download or read book Recipes for Russia written by Alison K. Smith and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alison K. Smith examines changing attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about the production and consumption of food in Russia from the late eighteenth century through the mid-nineteenth century. She focuses on the way that competing ideas based either in "traditional" Russian practice or in new practices from the "rational" West became the basis for Russians' understanding of themselves and their society. The Russians who participated in the process of self-definition were variously private authors and reformers or public servants of the Russian imperial state. Some had great success in creating a sense of themselves as ultimate authorities on a given topic. For example, a series of cookbook authors developed a system of writing Russian cookbooks in ways that borrowed from, but were still quite different from, foreign sources. Others found the process of mediating these ideas more difficult; agricultural reformers, in particular, sometimes found traditional practices, now deemed irrational, hard to eliminate. Recipes for Russia looks at the process of nation-building within the framework of the modern world—that is, it looks at the way individuals sought to define their nationality not only against outside influences but also by incorporating those outside influences into some coherent, yet national, whole. While Smith looks at food as part of Russian culture, she also connects it with the social, legal, and economic background that formed the culture, while examining the pre-reform period in significant detail. As a result, Recipes for Russia illuminates the great changes of this period, both in the food habits of Russians and in their views of themselves and of their nation.

Book Synopsis Paul I of Russia, 1754-1801 by : Roderick Erle McGrew
Download or read book Paul I of Russia, 1754-1801 written by Roderick Erle McGrew and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full modern biography of Paul I, son of Catherine the Great and Tsar of Russia, 1796-1801. Considered by some to have been a cruel despot verging on the insane, Paul has been seen by others as a progressive if flawed ruler, who was overthrown because he challenged the privileged nobility. McGrew explores the influences which shaped Paul's values and behavior, assessing the role played by Paul's upbringing on the fringes of his mother's court and of the French Revolution. He examines Paul's insecure, unpredictable, and often violent character, and traces his gradual evolution into a committed autocrat who combined enlightened humanitarianism with a firm belief in military discipline and hierarchy. As Tsar, he aroused fear, hatred, and contempt among his nobles, which resulted in a coup d'etat ending his brief reign and his life. McGrew's intensively researched study not only offers a portrait of a complex ruler and his times, but also assesses the part played by Paul in establishing the deeply conservative political outlook which characterized Russia in the nineteenth century.
