Book Synopsis Granularity in the Verbalization of Events and Objects by : Katerina Stathi
Download or read book Granularity in the Verbalization of Events and Objects written by Katerina Stathi and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study departs from the observation that in expressing ideas, some languages encode more details than others. It investigates whether languages encode events and/or objects at a coarse-grained (e.g., put, glass) as opposed to a fine-grained (e.g., lay, wine glass) level systematically. The level of detail is termed granularity, which is viewed as a cline from fine-grained (semantic specificity) to coarse-grained meaning (semantic generality). Four languages are investigated: German, English, Greek, and Turkish. The study draws on elicited data from a naming task. The verbalization of events is based on event and object descriptions in selected semantic domains. The results reveal significant granularity effects between languages and language types (satellite-framed vs. verb-framed). The study is relevant for scholars interested in linguistic typology, lexical and semantic typology, contrastive linguistics, event representation, psycholinguistics, and cognitive semantics.

Download or read book Communicative proficiency and linguistic development written by Inge Bartning and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has become the yardstick for teaching and testing language skills in Europe and elsewhere. Yet little is known about the relationships between the communicative levels established using the can-do statements of the CEFR and the developmental stages of grammatical and lexical development described by Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research. This book presents empirical research by members of the SLATE network (Second Language Acquisition and Testing in Europe), aimed at bridging this gap. The studies deal with several target languages, including Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Italian, Norwegian and Spanish, with adult, adolescent and child learners in both formal and informal contexts.

Book Synopsis Everyday Conceptions of Emotion by : J.A. Russell
Download or read book Everyday Conceptions of Emotion written by J.A. Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Everyday Conceptions of Emotion, prominent anthropologists, linguists and psychologists come together for the first time to discuss how emotions are conceptualised by people of different cultures and ages, speaking different languages. Anger, fear, jealousy and emotion itself are concepts that are bound up with the English language, embedded in a way of thinking, acting and speaking. At the same time, the metaphors underlying such concepts are often similar across languages, and children of different cultures follow common developmental pathways. The book thus discusses the interplay of social and cultural factors that humans share in their development of an understanding of the affective side of their lives. For researchers interested in emotion, development of concepts and language, cultural and linguistic influences on psychological processes.
Book Synopsis Grammatology and Literary Modernity in Turkey by : Nergis Erturk
Download or read book Grammatology and Literary Modernity in Turkey written by Nergis Erturk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1928 Turkish alphabet reform replacing the Perso-Arabic script with the Latin phonetic alphabet is an emblem of Turkish modernization. Grammatology and Literary Modernity in Turkey traces the history of Turkish alphabet and language reform from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, examining its effects on modern Turkish literature. In readings of the novels, essays, and poetry of Ahmed Midhat, Recâizade Mahmud Ekrem, Ömer Seyfeddin, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, Peyami Safa, and Nâzim Hikmet, Nergis Ertürk argues that modern Turkish literature is profoundly self-conscious of dramatic change in its own historical conditions of possibility. Where literary historiography has sometimes idealized the Turkish language reforms as the culmination of a successful project of Westernizing modernization, Ertürk suggests a different critical narrative: one of the consolidation of control over communication, forging a unitary nation and language from a pluralistic and multilingual society.
