Book excerpt: You have never played music or you cannot read sheet music, but you want to play famous and inspiring hymns and spirituals. Don’t worry! You will begin to play right away. This book was written to help the absolute beginner to play in a simple and easy way that requires no knowledge of reading music. If you are a beginner, playing by note can be difficult. It is easier to follow color-coded circles with note letters. The melodies have been transposed to one octave and simplified. Also, the letter-coded notations have been added and complex notations and symbols have been reduced. Such simplification makes it possible for people to play melodies, especially those who can’t read music or who have never played music before. The keys color of your musical instrument must be the same as the color chromatic scale in this book which corresponds to the popular Chromanotes color system. Popular in the US, the Chroma-Notes Colored Music System mixes the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. Mixing them gives three colors in between (orange, green, and violet), and mixing the 6 colors gives the new color tones. In total, there are 12 colors, which include all 12 notes of the chromatic scale, and one color blends into the next. The first 3 chroma-note colors are identical to the chakra color (C - red, D - orange, E - yellow). Note F is light green, note G - blue-green, A - blue-violet or magenta, and B - violet. We use here the Boomwhackers color system commonly used by American music teachers. All songs from this book are possible to play on an 8-note one-octave instrument. This book is aimed at your first musical experience no matter what age you are. There is no wrong time or not enough preparation to take up spiritual pursuits. This volume is the first index of African-American spirituals to be published in more than half a century and will be an important research tool for scholars and students of African-American history and music. The first collection of slave songs appeared in 1843, without musical notation, in a series of three articles by a Methodist Church missionary identified simply as c. Collections that included musical notation began appearing in the 1850s. The earliest book-length collection of spirituals containing both lyrics and music was published in 1867 and entitled Slave Songs of the United States. Not since the 1930s, with the publication of the Index to Negro Spirituals by the Cleveland Public Library, has an index of spirituals been compiled. The spirituals are neatly organized in four indexes: a title index, first line index, alternate title index and a topical index that includes twenty major categories. A bibliography of indexed sources serves as a guide for further research.

For those who know and love the spirituals, it offers a fresh prespective and an invitation to deeper understanding, spiritual transformation, and social renewal. This book was released on with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with beginners in mind. All songs were written with circles in the musical staff, and there are no stems or flags - only notes on the line - to keep it simple. If you are a beginner, playing by note can be difficult. It is easier to follow color-coded circles with note letters. Just by following the color circles, you will sound like an experienced musician. Music bells create an amazing sound and there is no need to worry about being in tune or finger position. The unique advantage of bell sets is the fact that each note is created by an individual bell, so the notes that are not used in a particular song can be removed and the student has a greater chance for success. A handbell orchestra acts as one instrument, with each musician responsible for their particular notes, sounding their assigned bells whenever those notes appear in the music. Give each participant one or two bells and ask them to join in a simple melody. Independently, whether the player has musical knowledge or not, the band will sound harmoniously with just a little bit of training. The color of the bells or resonator blocks must be the same as the color of the bells below. Our color chromatic scale corresponds to the chakra system. C low - red, D - orange, E - yellow, F - green, G - light blue, A - blue, B - violet, and C high - white. Each chakra is said to vibrate at a different frequency and is associated with a particular color and particular music note. There are two parts of our songbook. We present the traditional African songs in the first part and the African-American spirituals in the second. Part 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Usually, a guide for kalimba offers the possibility of playing by letter or by number, with letters being more common. The modern kalimba often has engraved letters representing the name of the notes. Under the engraved letter (or above the number), you can find one or two dots. These dots represent the octave above the center octave. We also put dots under the letters in the sheet music if they use an octave other than the main kalimba octave. In this book, we recommend playing by letter and/or color. Even if the signs are not engraved on the keys, normally, however, each kalimba has letter-coded stickers included in the set. Usually, they are not color-coded and since our book doesn’t include stickers, we suggest making color-coded stickers yourself. This is very easy and you can do it with very small pieces of colored paper. Our sheet music is not for a specific kalimba but is universal and suitable for 8-17 note kalimbas. We made our pictured sheet music as simple as possible, songs have been transposed for a diatonic range. Some melodies might be changed and simplified. You’ll quickly begin to play by letter-coded circles. The book has two parts. The first one contents folk songs, the second one has popular hymns and spirituals. Table of contents Part 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituals originated among enslaved Africans in America during the colonial era. They resonate throughout African American history from that time to the civil rights movement, from the cotton fields to the concert stage, and influenced everything from gospel music to blues and rap. They have offered solace in times of suffering, served as clandestine signals on the Underground Railroad, and been a source of celebration and religious inspiration. Spirituals are born from the womb of African American experience, yet they transcend national, disciplinary, and linguistic boundaries as they connect music, theology, literature and poetry, history, society, and education. In doing so, they reach every aspect of human experience. To make sense of the immense impact spirituals have made on music, culture, and society, this bibliography cites writings from a multidisciplinary perspective. This annotated bibliography documents articles, books, and dissertations published since 1902. Of those, 150 are books; 80 are chapters within books; 615 are journal articles, and 150 are dissertations, along with a selection of highly significant items published before 1920. The most recent publications included date from early 2014. Disciplines researched include music, literature and poetry, American history, religion, and African American Studies. Items included in the annotated bibliography are limited to English-language sources that were published in the United States and focus on African American spirituals in the United States, but there are a few select citations that focus on spirituals outside of the United States. Of the one thousand annotations, they are divided, roughly evenly, between: general studies and geographical studies; information about early spirituals; use of spirituals in art music, church music, and popular music; composers who based music on spirituals; performers of spirituals (ensembles and individuals); Bible, theology, and religious education; literature and poetry; pedagogical considerations, including the teaching of spirituals as well as prominent educators; reference works and a list of resources that were unavailable for review but are potentially useful. This book also offers considerable depth on particular topics such as the Fisk Jubilee Singers and William Grant Still with over thirty citations devoted to each. At the same time, materials included are quite diverse, with topics such as spirituals in Zora Neale Hurston’s novels; bible studies based on spirituals; enriching the teaching of geography through spirituals; Marian Anderson’s historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial; spiritual roots of rap; teaching dialect to singers; expressing African American religion in spirituals; Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s music; slave tradition of singing among the Gullah. The book contains indices by author, subject, and spiritual title. Additionally, an appendix of spirituals by biblical reference, listing both spiritual title to scriptural reference as well as scripture to spiritual title is included. T. L. Collins, Christian educator, compiled the appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their rich and complicated history, spirituals hold a special place in the American musical tradition. This soul-stirring musical form is irresistible to singers seeking to diversify their performance repertoire, but it is also riddled with controversy, especially for singers of non-African descent. Singer and historian Randye Jones welcomes singers of all backgrounds into the style while she explores its folk song roots and transformation into choral and solo vocal concert repertoire. Profiling key composers and pioneers of the genre, Jones also discusses the use of dialect and other controversial performance considerations. Contributed chapters address elements of collaborative piano, studio teaching, choral arrangement, voice science, and vocal health as they apply to the performance of spirituals. The So You Want to Sing series is produced in partnership with the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Like all books in the series, So You Want to Sing Spirituals features online supplemental material on the NATS website.

Book excerpt: Here is a skillful tracing of two tracks in the evolution of musical genres that have evolved from black religion. Songs of protest developed from the spiritual through social-gospel hymnody to culminate in songs of the civil-rights movement and the blues. Born in rebellion, they envision the Kingdom of God.Songs of praise, by contrast, express adoration. Beginning with the "ring-shout," Spencer follows the history of intoned declamation through the tongue song, Holiness-Pentecostal music, and the chanted sermon of the black preacher. Spencer's approach, termed theomusicology, unlocks the wealth of African-American sacred music with a theological key. The result is a fascinating account of a people's struggle with God in history.
