Book excerpt: The Most Beautiful Place In Hell is a memoir about bullying that the author suffered during his early adolescence, in the mid-1970s. It describes physical, verbal, and emotional abuse, which adults were often unaware of. The book chronicles Mansfield's young adulthood and his early relationships, which were often troubled and were influenced by his bullying experience. The long term impacts of bullying are emphasized, as well as the continued prevalence of bullying in the present day. There is a dialogue about bullying today which did not exist when the author grew up. The author's sincere hope is that this memoir can make a positive contribution to that dialogue.

Book excerpt: "From the Bible through Dante and up to Treblinka and Guantánamo Bay, here is a rich source for nightmares." --The New York Times Book Review Three thousand years of visions of Hell, from the ancient Near East to modern America A Penguin Classic From the Hebrew Bible's shadowy realm of Sheol to twenty-first-century visions of Hell on earth, The Penguin Book of Hell takes us through three thousand years of eternal damnation. Along the way, you'll take a ferry ride with Aeneas to Hades, across the river Acheron; meet the Devil as imagined by a twelfth-century Irish monk--a monster with a thousand giant hands; wander the nine circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno, in which gluttons, liars, heretics, murderers, and hypocrites are made to endure crime-appropriate torture; and witness the debates that raged in Victorian England when new scientific advances cast doubt on the idea of an eternal hereafter. Drawing upon religious poetry, epics, theological treatises, stories of miracles, and accounts of saints' lives, this fascinating volume of hellscapes illuminates how Hell has long haunted us, in both life and death. For more than seventy-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 2,000 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: On growing up in the American South of the 1960s—an all-American white boy—son of a long line of Methodist preachers, in the midst of the civil rights revolution, and discovering the culpability of silence within the church. By the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and columnist for The Birmingham News. "My dad was a Methodist preacher and his dad was a Methodist preacher," writes John Archibald. "It goes all the way back on both sides of my family. When I am at my best, I think it comes from that sermon place." Everything Archibald knows and believes about life is "refracted through the stained glass of the Southern church. It had everything to do with people. And fairness. And compassion." In Shaking the Gates of Hell, Archibald asks: Can a good person remain silent in the face of discrimination and horror, and still be a good person? Archibald had seen his father, the Rev. Robert L. Archibald, Jr., the son and grandson of Methodist preachers, as a moral authority, a moderate and a moderating force during the racial turbulence of the '60s, a loving and dependable parent, a forgiving and attentive minister, a man many Alabamians came to see as a saint. But was that enough? Even though Archibald grew up in Alabama in the heart of the civil rights movement, he could recall few words about racial rights or wrongs from his father's pulpit at a time the South seethed, and this began to haunt him. In this moving and powerful book, Archibald writes of his complex search, and of the conspiracy of silence his father faced in the South, in the Methodist Church and in the greater Christian church. Those who spoke too loudly were punished, or banished, or worse. Archibald's father was warned to guard his words on issues of race to protect his family, and he did. He spoke to his flock in the safety of parable, and trusted in the goodness of others, even when they earned none of it, rising through the ranks of the Methodist Church, and teaching his family lessons in kindness and humanity, and devotion to nature and the Earth. Archibald writes of this difficult, at times uncomfortable, reckoning with his past in this unadorned, affecting book of growth and evolution.

In this wickedly clever collection, Martin asks how we go about living in the tension between protesting lunatic politicians and picking up the kids from school, mourning a dying Earth and making soup, combating white supremacy and loving our dear ones. Martin’s poems pick at the tender scabs protecting our national and individual identities, and call for more honest healing. Things to Do in Hell channels 2016 anger into 2020 action with sophisticated, rhythmic verse that compels us to beat our swords into ploughshares and join the fight.

The dream was a reality and his chief dream interpreter told him that its going to be a daunting task to accomplish it. When the king went to Abamakura village, a naturally rich village, the kings dream was revealed. As interpreted, a tiniest troglodyte Satkechilenkat appeared in the beautifully mountainous mountains and angrily shouted on him to go away. The king angrily went away in great disappointment after fruitless attempts to talk to the mountain man. In trying to realize his dream, he sent several letters to Satkechilenkat to come to his palace for peaceful negotiation, but he succeeded not. The king decided he will go to war against the tiniest man. Like King Saul, he consulted the gods to tell him the outcome of the war. When he consulted the gods, the gods told him the army will suffer the most humiliating defeat of their lives. The gods strongly warned him never to go to war, but as pride goes before a fall, the king deferred the godly advice, because he had greedily put his possessive eyes on the fabulously virgin village. As warned by the gods, the army truly suffered the greatest defeat in a battle of the wittiest. The tiniest mans all-important demons outfaced the kings army. Despite the disappointingly disgraceful defeats, the king never gives up. The king switched to plan C by offering his stunningly beautiful daughter, Milelamkat to ANY MAN who can kill Satkechilenkat. Acclaimed greatest warriors responded to the clarion call, but none of them succeeded in killing the wonderfully powerful man. Yet the king never wants to give up. It was Nimasa with great wisdom that solved the kings problem. Hes a great warrior of words of peace and not of lethal weapons. He finally brought Satkechilenkat to the kings palace. He proves to everybody that sincerely peaceful dialogue solves all differences without anger, let alone fighting a war. He marries the exquisitely, attractively and most beautiful princess in the greatest kingdom. They lived very, very happy thereafter.

Book excerpt: Are we living in a spellbound world? When we think of spells, the picture conjured up in our minds often has more to do with fables we learned as children. An ugly old woman in a pointed hat reciting incantations at a boiling cauldron. The reality, however, is much more dangerous. Once given access to our lives, Satan can manipulate, dominate, and intimidate even the strongest Christian. Hell’s Spells draws from Paul’s writings to the Galatian church to bring you a fresh awareness of Satan’s spells and strategies, demonstrating how you can break free from the influence of such evils as: · Controlling spirits · Generational curses · Witchcraft in the home Cutting through the sensationalism and spookiness of spiritual warfare, Raley enables you to identify, understand, and break every bewitching spell the devil wants to launch against your life, your family, and your purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the wicked have traveled a course of sin, and discover they have reason to fear the God;s judgement and wrath for their sins, they begin to wish there is no God to punish them, then by degrees they persuade themselves there is no God, and then they set themselves to study the arguments to support their opinion. This excellent book by John Bunyan covers the subject matter of the existence of heaven and hell as well as studies and dispells the arguments presented by sinners who argue there is no heaven and hell. Most do not know that Bunyan wrote some 60 books, and poetry too. And also almost a well-kept secret is that his doctrine was so biblically laced that many good men would call him too severe. He believed in, and taught, ALL the doctrines of grace, including double-predestination, or reprobation. Why then is he not smeared with the name of hyper-Calvinist like Goodwin, Gill, and others? I guess the same people ought to call Luther a hyper-Lutheran, for he believed and taught it, too. Why begin a review of Bunyan's writings with such a view of his doctrine? It is to show that a Pilgrim's Progress can come only from someone who believes and teaches ALL the counsel of God, without flinching, yea, with loving-kindness. Illegally, He sat in a jail cell over a river for 12 years with his Bible, Galatians by Luther, and another book or two. He had the choice of feeling miserable and murmuring, or of filling his time, thoughts, and energies with studying that Bible, and seeking a way to be of help to his more comfortable, but less dedicated, brothers and sisters. Listen, dear saints, you can't do any better than reading Bunyan. Like Gurnall, he covers everything here and there, and with a sweetness that can come only from God. What a shame that his large heart should be encased in such small print. But, like digging gold, it is worth the time and trouble to dig spiritual gold. Bunyan (1628-1688) rose from an humble beginning to being a preacher to a little house church, to 12 years in jail because he would not agree to quit preaching, to a huge church in London. He wrote 66 books, nearly all while in jail.
