Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mormon Battalion: Its History and Achievements At this point Mr. Little seems to have taken up the matter personally and directly with the President, and under date of June lst addressed an Appeal to him. In it Mr Little expresses confidence in the President, else he would not have left his home to ask favors of him for his people (i. E., the Mormons). He gave an account of himself and his forefathers, who fought in the bat tles of the Revolution of his own character, vouched for by his letters of introduction from men of high standing; and then avers that the people he represents are of as high character as himself. I come to you, he said, fully believing that you will not suffer me to depart without rendering me some pecuniary assistance. Our brethren in the west are compelled to go [west]; and we in the eastern country are determined to go and live, and, if necessary, to suffer and die with them. Our determinations are fixed and cannot be changed. From twelve to fifteen thousand have already left Nauvoo for California, and many others are making ready to go. Some have gone around Cape Horn, and I trust before this time have landed at the Bay of San Francisco. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Battalion participated in the United States conquest of California and in the discovery of gold, opened four major wagon trails, and carried the news of gold east to an eager American public. Yet, the battalion is little known beyond Mormon history. This first complete history of the wide-ranging army unit restores it to its central place in Western history, and provides descendants a complete roster of the Battalion's members.

Yet there are other traces of the past available to historians: the material things that people have chosen, made, and used. This book examines how material culture can enhance historians' understanding of the past, both worldwide and across time. Deploying material culture to discover the pasts of constituencies who have left few traces in written record, the authors present familiar historical problems in new ways. This volume offers case studies arranged thematically in six sections that address the relationship of history and material culture to cognition, technology, the symbolic, social distinction, and memory.

Book Synopsis Desert Between the Mountains by : Michael S. Durham
Download or read book Desert Between the Mountains written by Michael S. Durham and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 24, 1847, a band of Mormon pioneers who had crossed the Great Plains and hauled their wagons over the Rocky Mountains descended into the Salt Lake valley. They settled alongside the Indians there in an immense, self-contained region covering more than 220,000 square miles aptly named the Great Basin because its lakes and rivers have no outlet to the sea. Within ten years of their arrival, the Mormons had established nineteen communities extending all the way to San Diego, California. But theirs was not a story of splendid isolation. The Mormon way of life was under a constant strain from interactions with miners, solders, explorers, mountain men, Indians, the Pony Express, railroad builders, federal officials, and an assortment of other "Gentiles." This is the definitive, dramatic, and multifaceted study of the Great Basin, unifying its history with its geography.
