Download or read book American Zoo written by David Grazian and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close-up look at the contradictions and wonders of the modern zoo Orangutans swing from Kevlar-lined fire hoses. Giraffes feast on celebratory birthday cakes topped with carrots instead of candles. Hi-tech dinosaur robots growl among steel trees, while owls watch animated cartoons on old television sets. In American Zoo, sociologist David Grazian takes us on a safari through the contemporary zoo, alive with its many contradictions and strange wonders. Trading in his tweed jacket for a zoo uniform and a pair of muddy work boots, Grazian introduces us to zookeepers and animal rights activists, parents and toddlers, and the other human primates that make up the zoo's social world. He shows that in a major shift away from their unfortunate pasts, American zoos today emphasize naturalistic exhibits teeming with lush and immersive landscapes, breeding programs for endangered animals, and enrichment activities for their captive creatures. In doing so, zoos blur the imaginary boundaries we regularly use to separate culture from nature, humans from animals, and civilization from the wild. At the same time, zoos manage a wilderness of competing priorities—animal care, education, scientific research, and recreation—all while attempting to serve as centers for conservation in the wake of the current environmental and climate-change crisis. The world of the zoo reflects how we project our own prejudices and desires onto the animal kingdom, and invest nature with meaning and sentiment. A revealing portrayal of comic animals, delighted children, and feisty zookeepers, American Zoo is a remarkable close-up exploration of a classic cultural attraction.

With this book, even the youngest children can playfully learn their ABCs, the names of animals, and how to count. This fun animal book tells the exciting story of a zoo preparing for its opening day. The head zookeeper, who guides young readers through its pages, is waiting anxiously for the animals to get there. Will they all be in their cages by the time the first visitors arrive? Illustrated with loving attention to detail, The Zoo's Grand Opening is ideal for pre-school children. The book opens on an empty zoo and then follows the arrival of the animals, starting with an anaconda (representing the letter "A" and the number one), followed by a bear ("B" and two) and so on all the way to "Z" and 26. While they enjoy the story, children will playfully be introduced to the letters of the alphabet and how to count. At its end, they have not only been introduced to a variety of creatures, but they also know how many animals can be seen at the grand opening.

Book Synopsis The Hatfield SCT Lunar Atlas by : Anthony Cook
Download or read book The Hatfield SCT Lunar Atlas written by Anthony Cook and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, it became obvious that Henry Hatfield’s original atlas wasn’t suitable for all current commercially-made amateur telescopes. Newtonian telescopes and astronomical refractors – for many years the only choice for amateurs – invert the observed image. The standard Hatfield Atlas therefore follows the IAU (International Astronomical Union) convention of having maps (and photographs) with South at the top and West on the left: an inverted image. However, the current ranges of Schmidt-Cassegrain and Maksutov telescopes – that’s most of those manufactured by Meade, Celestron, and many others – don’t invert the observed image but instead reverse it left-for-right. That’s with North at the top and East on the left. Because of the way the human visual system works, it is almost impossible to mentally ‘mirror-image’ a map to compare it with the view through the eyepiece , so even turning an IAU-standard atlas upside-down doesn’t help! This new SCT version of the Atlas solves this problem for observers. Identification of lunar features is made quick and easy. The new, digitally re-mastered second edition vastly improves the clarity and definition of the original photographs – significantly beyond the resolution limits of the photographic grains present in earlier atlas versions – whilst preserving the layout and style of the original publications. This has been achieved by merging computer-visualized Earth-based views of the lunar surface, derived from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data, with scanned copies of Commander Hatfield’s photographic plates, using the author’s own software. The result is a The Hatfield SCT Lunar Atlas for 21st century amateur telescopes up to and beyond 12-inch aperture. It contains all the features that made the original so widely used: a combination of an index of all International Astronomical Union named primary lunar features, and twelve chart areas help to locate any named lunar features of interest that can each be examined under typically five different states of illumination. Close ups of interesting features are also included. The new Atlas is supplemented by an introduction to its use, a short description of the digital re-mastering technique, and a completely new section describing lunar observing techniques. At the end of the atlas there is an index of all named features and crater diameters, along with a summary table of the dates and times that the original Hatfield images represent.
Download or read book Shades of the Moon written by Eric James and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-06-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The move from the City to the Suburbs was a huge change, even though I was young when it happened. People in the suburbs were a lot different than the city and we as kids thought it was paradise. Boy were we wrong. Most people in this town are fake, corrupted, selfish, and overall ASSHOLES, in my opinion. A lot of politics I wont get into but you might see some of it. From the time I turned seventeen, to about twenty two, Ive gone threw some pretty interesting experiences. My life entailed robbing, stealing, fighting, drugs & drug dealing, alcohol, women, kidnapping, sports, and of course fighting. Ive had my ups and downs, arrested eleven times but never locked up, so I guess Im pretty lucky, or have a very good lawyer; just had a few over nighters in a holding cell. My family is very close and we chill together all the time. Id do anything for them, some not for me, but thats just the way they are. I guess they call me the crazy one, but honestly, every family needs someone like me. From my tales to tell, overall I wouldnt take any of it back. I love my life and how I lived it. I feel my past was lived to the fullest and my crew thugged it out for years. I know that most of the trouble I got into was because of the choices I made, and even then I knew that it was the wrong path to take, but I just didnt care. While these adventures where happening, I knew my life would be change for the better once I finished school and landed a good set job. Though it seemed like it took forever, I finally did finish school and became full time at the position Id been working at for a few years. That is when my life started. I enjoyed being young and dumb, as they say, but now its time to grow up and become a man. Ive gone through plenty of friends over the years, some lost due to changes schools or choosing different cliques in school, others lost on bad terms; sometimes I knew why and others I didnt understand. I lost a couple very close best friends and also gained new ones. Life is a struggle, I struggled through it but was able to surpass. I got through the tough times, enjoyed the memorable times, and here are my stories to tell. This book will deliver my resume of an uncontrolled substance that almost ruined my life. The rage and power I absorbed through fisting a persons face brought happiness to me. Every true street fighter will tell you theyve gotten their ass kicked at least once in their life, and probably didnt like it. I on the other hand loved it. The more I got hit the more aggressive I became, trying to destroy anything in my path. It became so much of an addiction that I looked for it all the time and even threw down with my own brother. I loved to fight and was pretty good at it but it almost got me killed a few times. My stories here are all true, but some names may have been altered for confidentiality purposes. In no way am I trying to disrespect anyone, past or present, because its a story about my life but a lot of others are involved as well. Overall, I have been in over fifty legit street fights, mostly in a five year range and these are the main tales. Other than fighting and the mischief Im actually a really nice person and a great athlete. My whole life has been based around sports and my entire family is athletes, including the girls. Though I pursued a sports career I still found myself living the Hip Hop lifestyle, which made me the person I am today. I speak mostly of the bad experiences rather than the good because everyone has their good moments and the awful times are the juiciest. I give a lot of credit to my parents for putting up with me all these years and I know what theyve done for me and I really do appreciate it. They are the best parents any kid can ever ask for, and to put them through what I did was a horrible thing to do, so Im truly sorry. Like the saying goes, what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger, I guess Im
