Book excerpt: This book presents the creative, arts-based and educative thinking resulting from a “21 day autoethnography challenge” set of self-guided prompts arising from the large-scale collaborative, creative, and global project to explore Massive and Microscopic Sensemaking during COVId-19 Times. It employs a guiding methodological framework of critical autoethnography, narrating the macro and micro experiences of COVID-19 from a first-person, and critically, culturally-informed perspective. The book features chapters creatively responding to the 21-day pandemic experiment through digital autoethnographic artworks, writings, and collaborations. It allowed authors to build embodied sensibilities, practice autoethnographic forms of writing and making, and transform personal experiences through the COVID-19 moment into critical understanding of scale, sense-making, and the relationality of humans, nonhumans, and the planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come along on an informative, whirlwind tour of urban species—from intelligent crows to backyard lichens—and discover that you are surrounded by wild nature, even in your own backyard. When biologist Hanna Bjørgaas spots a fairy cup lichen in Antarctica, she is surprised to recognize it from her own backyard in Oslo. When she returns home, she embarks on a journey into urban nature, visiting city parks, cemeteries, and concrete rooftops to investigate the species that live in urban spaces. Along the way, she meets corvids, songbirds, ants, pigeons, bats, sparrows, fungi, and linden trees—and the experts who study their surprising abilities to survive, and thrive, in the city. As Bjørgaas discovers, urban nature—and its unique mixture of species that have never lived together before in Earth’s history—is valuable. More than half of the world’s human population lives in densely populated areas—and plants and animals have followed us into cities. Secret Life of the City invites us to pay more attention to the sounds, sights, and smells of urban nature right outside our door. A treasure trove of fascinating flora and fauna, this wonderful book offers a plea to save our city plants, animals, and fungi before we lose them, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marries the several elements: a given text (1 Samuel), a focal character (King Saul), a spacious and creative theorist (Mikhail Bakhtin), a historical context (the collapse of monarchic Israel and the moment for return. The dilemma for the exile community is to return with royal leadership or without it); a reading challenge is: can a character be a cipher for a corporate experience (Saul represent the whole monarchic experience)? The author argues that the narrative of 1 Samuel may be read as a riddle propounding the complex story of Israel/Judah's experience with kings as an instruction for those pondering leadership choices in the sixth century. The work is an extended reflection on what went wrong with kings and why new leadership must be attempted. The extended riddle of Saul works to show how the life of the king is fundamentally destructive, not because any is malicious but because of many factors of weakness and inadequacy that will be familiar to readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 140 fewer pages than the fourth edition, the fifth obviously has been tightened; it's partly in the format, with narrower margins and less white space. Otherwise, some text has been rephrased or rearranged and topics (for example, adolescent psychology) given shorter shrift. Coverage of Holocaust literature has been expanded, and discussion of problem novels improved. Sports books have been dumped in with humor, movies, and other stuff, including humorous poetry, which, it seems, the authors feel is the only kind teens read for pleasure; other types of poetry as well as short stories and drama are relegated to the English classroom, coverage of which has been enlarged. The chapter on sf and fantasy is good on historical aspects but weak on today's writers. A short list of Internet listserves and Web sites has been incorporated as part of using YA literature in the library. Once again, updating of appendixes seems spotty. Nevertheless, this is useful as a resource for youth librarians and a tool for teaching YA literature. Sally Estes.
