Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montenegro has been a much neglected part of former Yugoslavia. The Montenegrin Warrior Tradition aims to scrutinize the identity debates in Montenegrin public opinion over the question of membership to NATO and to explore how narratives created for that purpose have been linked with Montenegrin identity, history, tradition, and the concept of Montenegrin masculinity. The intertwining of the question of identity with that of NATO membership, and the inseparability of these issues from the context of quotidian politics produces an array of controversies among Montenegrin citizens. The book interprets the public and private debates about Montenegro joining NATO through the prism of anthropological studies of identity; in particular those focused on a general theory of culture and the anthropology of multiculturalism.

Download or read book Montenegro written by Kenneth Morrison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2006, following a closely and bitterly fought referendum, Montenegro finally regained the status of an independent nation that it had lost in 1918 - the most recent chapter in a highly turbulent history. The tiny Balkan republica??s declaration of independence from Serbia represented - barring the final resolution of Kosovoa??s status - the final stage in the disintegration of what was once Yugoslavia. But how did the Balkans forge this tiny republic? What sets it apart from the other dominant powers in the region? And what will be its future role on the worlda??s stage? 'Montenegro: A Modern History' charts the countrya??s contemporary history in accessible and comprehensive form. Kenneth Morrison explores the forces that have shaped the republic of Montenegro and questions where this will lead in the future, examining the fundamental issues of Montenegrin identity and statehood in a wider European as well as a Balkan context. This full and authoritative modern history is essential reading for everyone interested in the political and social dynamics of one of Europea??s youngest states.

This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the most comprehensive study to date of political and social developments in Montenegro from the processes that led to the disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Montenegro's eventful trajectory towards independence and, later, towards Euro-Atlantic integration. Kenneth Morrison draws upon an extensive range of primary and secondary sources to illuminate the key developments in Montenegro during three decades characterised by political, social and economic flux. Beginning with the 'happening of the people' in 1988 and concluding with a detailed analysis of political developments in the first decade since Montenegro gained its independence, the author addresses the themes of nationalism, identity, statehood and the party political dynamics in both the Montenegrin and the wider Southeast European context.

Book Synopsis A History of Montenegro by : Francis Stevenson
Download or read book A History of Montenegro written by Francis Stevenson and published by Ozymandias Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical interest that attaches to Montenegro is utterly out of proportion to the space that country occupies on the surface of the earth. With the exception of the politically insignificant republics of San Marino and Andorra, and of the principalities of Monaco and Liechtenstein, it is the smallest unit in the aggregate of European states; and yet it is able to exhibit in the pages of its annals a record of persistent heroism to which not one of them can furnish a parallel. For nearly five centuries its hardy mountaineers have carried on a struggle for existence against an enemy many times superior to them in point of numbers; and, whilst the remaining Slavs of the Balkan peninsula have been compelled, during the greater part, at least, of that period to submit to an alien domination, the Montenegrins alone have succeeded in preserving intact their national independence..

Book Synopsis Citizenship in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Montenegro by : Jelena Džankic
Download or read book Citizenship in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Montenegro written by Jelena Džankic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to the citizen when states and nations come into being? How do the different ways in which states and nations exist define relations between individuals, groups, and the government? Are all citizens equal in their rights and duties in the newly established polity? Addressing these key questions in the contested and ethnically heterogeneous post-Yugoslav states of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Montenegro, this book reinterprets the place of citizenship in the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the creation of new states in the Western Balkans. Carefully analysing the interplay between competing ethnic identities and state-building projects, the author proposes a new analytical framework for studying continuities and discontinuities of citizenship in post-partition, post-conflict states. The book maintains that citizenship regimes in challenged states are shaped not only by the immediate political contexts that generated them, but also by their historical trajectories, societal environments in which they exist, as well as the transformative powers of international and European factors.
