Book excerpt: A monstrance, also known as an ostensorium (or an ostensory),[1] is the vessel used in Roman Catholic, Old Catholic and Anglican churches for the more convenient exhibition of some object of piety, such as the consecrated Eucharistic host during Eucharistic adoration or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It is also used as reliquary for the public display of relics of some saints.[2] The word monstrance comes from the Latin word monstrare,[3] while the word ostensorium came from the Latin word ostendere. Both terms, meaning "to show", are used for vessels intended for the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, but ostensorium has only this meaning.

Book excerpt: Hardback - Second Edition MONSTRANCE I: Objet D'Art Mystery Novel - Based in part on on true crimes and real eventsSecond edition printing includes sample chapter from Monstrance II: Jake Maris III (Chapter 1: Charleston Maris) See excerpt below.DESCRIPTION: MADE OF PURE PLATINUM AND ENCRUSTED with over 900 precious jewels, the million-dollar Jackson-Bonet Monstrance of the Virgin Mary is a rare and spectacular religious relic designed to exhibit the Holy Eucharist for the adoration of the faithful. In 1995, when Penney Johansen, the acting curator of the Maris-Sewell Museum discovers it is stolen from a small Catholic monastery and college in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, state and federal law enforcement converge on the peaceful Oklahoma campus. Initial suspicion falls on the museum's former curator, a handsome Benedictine monk named Brother Michelangelo Covington, who is living a secret double life as a high-priced escort.EXCERPT: PENNY WALKED THROUGH THE OPEN-AIRED COURTYARD OF THE MUSEUM, but she did not hear the sound of the waterfall. Nor did she hear the gentle sounds from the steel wind chimes in the crisp autumn air. All she heard was the pounding of her heart and the words Monstrance! Monstrance! Monstrance! playing over and over like a raging mantra in her brain.Excerpt From Monstrance II: Jake Maris III (Chapter 1: Charleston Maris)AS THE CASKET OF CHARLESTON MOULTRIE MARIS was rolled out of the hearse in front of Christ the King Catholic Church in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, Archbishop Thaddeus Richter sprinkled generous amount of Holy Water onto the dark mahogany coffin of his dear friend as he recited in Latin: "Si capax ego te absolvo?." Stella Morrow Maris, Charleston's widow stood like a saint in an elegant and under-stated black dress. A sheer black veil draped over her lovely, aging, grief-stricken face as a gentle Oklahoma wind blew her veil in fluttering folds. She was thankful for gentle winds on this most sorrowful day. She was to lay her husband to rest after 17 years of marriage.

Book excerpt: This collection of sixteen essays deals with the role of magic, religion and witchcraft in European culture, 1450-1650, and the critical role of the visual in that culture. It covers the relationship of humanism and magic; the intersection of religious ritual, orthodoxy and power; the discursive links between the visual language of witchcraft and contemporary anxieties about sexuality and savagery. The introductory chapter urges us to exorcise our tendency to reduce historical experiences of the demonic to forms of unreason created in a distant past. Only then can we understand the role of the demonic in our historical definition of the self and the other. Richly illustrated with 112 images, the book will interest historians and art historians.

With this special bundle, you’ll get the complete text of the following two titles: Catholicism For Dummies, 2nd Edition Catholicism For Dummies is not a catechism or religious textbook, but a casual, down-to-earth introduction for Catholics and non-Catholics. It gives commonsense explanations of Catholic weddings, Baptisms, funerals, Confirmations, and First Communions. You'll also discover other important topics that can help you better understand the Catholic culture--from morality and devotions, worship and liturgy to twenty-first-century issues and questions modern Catholics face. There are more than one billion Catholics in the world, and each one shares a foundational set of basic beliefs and practices that he or she follows. Some of the teachings of Catholicism are thousands of years old, while others are more recent. This intelligent and faithful look at Catholicism will open your eyes to this religion and answer many of the questions you may have about it. Catholic Mass For Dummies Throughout the centuries, the liturgy of the Church has taken a variety of regional and historical forms, but one thing has remained constant: the Mass has always been the central form of Catholic worship. Catholic Mass For Dummies gives you a step-by-step overview of the Catholic Mass, as well as a close look at the history and meaning of the Mass as a central form of Catholic worship. You'll find information on the order of a Mass and coverage of major Masses including weddings, funerals, holiday services, and holy days of obligation. If you're a Catholic looking to enhance your knowledge of your faith, an adult studying to convert to Catholicism, a CCD instructor, or a non-Catholic who wants to understand the many nuances of the Catholic Mass, this hands-on, friendly guide has you covered.
