Book excerpt: An ancient song leads to a deadly race to find Genghis Khan's tomb. Former special ops officer Grant Casey thought that the Bone Guard was a good idea. A team specializing in securing historically important archeological digs across the globe--how could it possibly fail? A distinct lack of clients indicates that the idealistic vision of the Bone Guard may not have been such a good idea after all. Just when things seem doomed to fail, Casey runs into university researcher Liz Kirschner, who has just uncovered what looks like a map to Genghis Khan's tomb. An assassination attempt, an arson at her research library, and the bankroll of a mysterious Hong Kong billionaire clinches it: The Bone Guard has their first client. Facing a Chinese government that wants to destroy the tomb of the man who conquered their land, the Bone Guard hunt for clues from Cambridge, England, to the steppes of inner Mongolia, the whole time dodging assassins, government police, and relying on a Hong Kong billionaire who seems to be manipulating them for his own ends. As the forces converge on the map's stunning archeological destination, Casey's idea of the Bone Guard turns out to have been a very good one indeed.

Book excerpt: The romantic story of the Mongols and their achievements has been written so completely that it is unnecessary to repeat it here even though it is as fascinating as a tale from the Arabian Nights. The present status of the country, however, is but little known to the western world. In a few words I will endeavor to sketch the recent political developments, some of which occurred while we were in Mongolia. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the great Genghiz Khan and his illustrious successor Kublai Khan "almost in a night" erected the greatest empire the world has ever seen. Not only did they conquer all of Asia, but they advanced in Europe as far as the Dnieper leaving behind a trail of blood and slaughter. All Europe rose against them, but what could not be accomplished by force of arms was wrought in the Mongols themselves by an excess of luxury. In their victorious advance great stores of treasure fell into their hands and they gave themselves to a life of ease and indulgence. By nature the Mongols were hard riding, hard living warriors, accustomed to privation and fatigue. The poison of luxury ate into the very fibers of their being and gradually they lost the characteristics which had made them great. The ruin of the race was completed by the introduction of Lamaism, a religion which carries only moral destruction where it enters, and eventually the Mongols passed under the rule of the once conquered Chinese and then under the Manchus. Until the overthrow of the Manchu regime in China in 1911, and the establishment of the present republic, there were no particularly significant events in Mongolian history. But at that time the Russians, wishing to create a buffer state between themselves and China as well as to obtain special commercial privileges in Mongolia, aided the Mongols in rebellion, furnished them with arms and ammunition and with officers to train their men.

Download or read book Yuan written by Nancy Steinhardt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monumental illustrated survey of the architecture of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century China The Yuan dynasty endured for a century, leaving behind an architectural legacy without equal, from palaces, temples, and pagodas to pavilions, tombs, and stages. With a history enlivened by the likes of Khubilai Khan and Marco Polo, this spectacular empire spanned the breadth of China and far, far beyond, but its rulers were Mongols. Yuan presents the first comprehensive study in English of the architecture of China under Mongol rule. In this richly illustrated book, Nancy Shatzman Steinhardt looks at cities such as the legendary Shangdu—inspiration for Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Xanadu—as well as the architecture the Mongols encountered on their routes of conquest. She examines the buildings and monuments of diverse faiths in China during the period, from Buddhist and Daoist to Confucian, Islamic, and Christian, as well as unusual structures such as observatories, archways, stone and metal buildings, and sarcophaguses. Steinhardt dispels long-standing views of the Mongols as destroyers of cities and architecture across Asia, showing how the khans and their families built more than they tore down. She demonstrates that the stipulations of the Chinese building system were powerful and resilient enough to guide the architecture that rose under Mongolian rule. Drawing on Steinhardt’s groundbreaking textual research in numerous languages as well as her pioneering fieldwork at sites across East Asia, Yuan will become the standard reference on this critical period of cultural and artistic exchange.

Book Synopsis Ancient China and Its Enemies by : Nicola Di Cosmo
Download or read book Ancient China and Its Enemies written by Nicola Di Cosmo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations between Inner Asian nomads and Chinese are a continuous theme throughout Chinese history. By investigating the formation of nomadic cultures, by analyzing the evolution of patterns of interaction along China's frontiers, and by exploring how this interaction was recorded in historiography, this looks at the origins of the cultural and political tensions between these two civilizations through the first millennium BC. The main purpose of the book is to analyze ethnic, cultural, and political frontiers between nomads and Chinese in the historical contexts that led to their formation, and to look at cultural perceptions of 'others' as a function of the same historical process. Based on both archaeological and textual sources, this 2002 book also introduces a new methodological approach to Chinese frontier history, which combines extensive factual data with a careful scrutiny of the motives, methods, and general conception of history that informed the Chinese historian Ssu-ma Ch'ien.
