Nothing can be more absurd, nothing more liable to produce serious misfortunes, than the succession to supreme power of one i whom neither worth nor capacity fits for the station, and whom a court education most probably renders still less virtuous and able than nature had made him. Nevertheless, the dangers which are sure to result from suffering the place of chief magistrate to be played for by intriguing, or fought for by ambitious men, whose partisans will assuredly convulse the country with their conflicts, are so formidable as to make reflecting persons overlook all lesser risks in the apprehension of the worst of calamities, civil war. This is the redeeming quality of monarchy; it is far enough from leaving the question all one way, but upon the balance it gives a great gain. The question may not be decided for all countries and all stages of society, between a commonwealth, where the chief magistrate must be elective, and a monarchy, Where he must be hereditary; but in the present state of society, or at least in the state of society where monarchy has hitherto been established, the risk of civil war does appear to determine that question. Wherever men are so ill-informed respecting their own interests, their duties, and their rights, as to reckon the person or the family of the sovereign the most important of all subjects of controversy, the rule of hereditary succession is the only security against that risk; and no state can safely have any form of government which we term monarchical without adopting this rule---for if the people have become wise enough to avoid splitting into parties and fighting for who shall be king, they are wise enough to govern themselves, and_the great use of monarchy is at an end....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2016 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Since the 2006 coup d'état, Thailand has been riven by two opposing political visions: one which aspires to a modern democracy and the rule of law, and another which holds to the traditional conception of a kingdom ruled by an exemplary Buddhist monarch. Thailand has one of the world's largest populations of observant Buddhists and one of its last politically active monarchies. This book examines the Theravada Buddhist foundations of Thailand's longstanding institution of monarchy. Patrick Jory states that the storehouse of monarchical ideology is to be found in the popular literary genre known as the Jātakas, tales of the Buddha's past lives. The best-known of these, the Vessantara Jātaka, disseminated an ideal of an infinitely generous prince as a bodhisatta or future Buddha—an ideal which remains influential in Thailand today. Using primary and secondary source materials largely unknown in Western scholarship, Jory traces the history of the Vessantara Jātaka and its political-cultural importance from the ancient to the modern period. Although pressures from European colonial powers and Buddhist reformers led eventually to a revised political conception of the monarchy, the older Buddhist ideal of kingship has yet endured.

Book excerpt: Republic - The Case Against The Monarchy, is a call for the move from a monarchy to a democratic republic. In Part I, the author takes aim at the principles behind the monarchy itself, from the earliest days of kings and chieftains, to the divine right to rule, to the principle of heredity, the role of the monarch, the numerous and far reaching powers that are enjoyed by the head of state, the effects on the populace, and the number of unworthy successors that are lining up to take the throne. In Part II, the most common arguments for keeping the monarchical institution are examined and debunked, the author showing that at best they are a minor distraction from the main issues, at worst a simpering compromise. Here, value for money, charity, tradition, grandeur, charisma, and tourism are all shown to be fallacious as valid reasons for the continuation of the monarchy. In Part III, the ways and means of transitioning to a republic are studied. It is here where the author sets out their Declaration, and also drafts a Bill of Rights, as inspiration for others to keep the light of reason lit against those who would do all they can to extinguish it. Scathing in its indictment, ruthless in its attack, Republic is the most damning case yet written against one of the most controversial institutions in the modern world.

Book excerpt: 'A crucial, riveting polemic in support of one of the most precious things humanity has built - democracy itself' OWEN JONES 'Graham Smith shows what fools our rotten constitution makes of us, with a monarch as emblem of a country beset by nepotism, backhanders, chumocracy and inherited privilege. Read and rebel!' POLLY TOYNBEE We're constantly told the same things about the monarchy: But the monarchy is good for tourism.. It isn't! Evidence points to some royal weddings actually having a negative impact on inbound tourism. But the monarchy makes a big difference to charity.. Of the approx. 1,200 charities with a royal patron, 74% had no contact with their patron during the preceding year. But everyone loves the monarchy.. A January 2023 poll showed support for the monarchy is down 55 percent. It's wrong in principle and it doesn't work in practice. It doesn't have to be this way. They say Britain should be proud to have the mother of parliaments, to be a shining beacon of democracy and an example to other nations. But there's an elephant in the room. At the heart of power is a single family. They weren't elected but they live off the public purse. They aren't accountable to anyone, and yet between them they are privy to more government secrets than many cabinet ministers. Divinely appointed using a special hat, the head of the family is your superior, you his subject. Apparently he is guardian of our constitution - but we're also told he wouldn't dream of interfering in politics. If you accept the monarchy, you must accept the moral compromise that comes with it, from its erosion of the principle of equality to the secret interference in our laws. But the good news is that we don't have to accept it. True democracy is within our reach.
