Book Synopsis Vestibular System Part 2: Psychophysics, Applied Aspects and General Interpretations by : H.H. Kornhuber
Download or read book Vestibular System Part 2: Psychophysics, Applied Aspects and General Interpretations written by H.H. Kornhuber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is easy to underrate the importance of a sensory system whose receptor is buried deep within the skull and of whose performance we are usually not aware. It is only when it malfunctions that we know we have a ves tibular system! Unraveling the mechanisms by which activation of the vestibular labyrinth exerts its varied effects presents a great challenge, which increasing numbers of investigators are rushing to meet. At this time a period of transition appears to have been reached. On the one hand, physiological and anatomical techniques have provided extensive information about the properties of the receptor and of some of the path ways that link it to the musculature. On the other hand, extensive be havioral and psychophysical studies provide different insights into the mechanisms involved in vestibular reflexes. Until recently there has been relatively 1ittle interaction between the practitioners of these two widely different approaches. It has been our goal to assess and describe the progress that has been made in both areas and, when possible, to make a synthesis of the results. As will be seen, numerous questions are raised in the process, and we hope that they will help in pointing the way to further investigations. We are grateful to the authors and publishers who gave permission to reproduce many of the figures, and to our colleagues who have read and commented on all or part of the manuscript. Victor J.
Book Synopsis Psychology of Language and Learning by : O. Hobart Mowrer

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are very few psychologists living today who have contributed more to the advancement of psychology, in general, and to the psychology of language and thought, in particular, than O. Hobart Mowrer. It would indeed be ludicrous to attempt to list the many and varied accomplishments and contributions that Dr. Mowrer has made to his profession over the years. Even the selected essays that are in this volume can only suggest a modicum of his remarkable, vital, and ongo ing contribution to the psychology of language and thought. Further more, the chapters in this book, which were published over a period of some twenty-five years, clearly illustrate that Dr. Mowrer was concerned not only with basic research, but that he also had an interest in its application. These chapters also point to the fact that although Dr. Mowrer's orientation was primarily that of a "behaviorist" at the onset, his constant attempts to revise knowledge in this field and broaden its scope make it virtually impossible for us to classify him as a behaviorist in the narrow meaning of that term. The chapter on mental imagery, for example, written only a few years ago, serves to illustrate this point. In addition, the Autism Theory of Speech Development (see Chapter 4), one of Dr.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subjects were exposed to a 10-day habituation series of 200 CW accelerations in total darkness while performing attention-demanding tasks. Decelerations were subthreshold. Preliminary and post-tests indicated that slow-phase nystagmus and duration of the ocular response declined bidirectionally as a function of the habituation trials, but frequency of nystagmus increased during the stimulus period and for a few seconds thereafter. These changes were approximately equal for both CW and CCW stimulation. Measurements of subjective velocity were obtained during several preand post-trials but never during the habituation series. A decline in the intensity of the sensation to CW acceleration, but not to CCW stimulation, was produced by the habituation series. A second post-test given after one month with no intervening stimulation showed little or no restoration of nystagmus. However, the subjective reaction demonstrated a clear, albeit incomplete pattern of recovery. (Author).
