Benjamin Woodbury: A Home Missionary; And the Need and Object of Home Missions According to the teachings of the Messiah, the first missionary sent from heaven, the troublous times fore token the coming of great events. His time is short. Satan, the arch fiend, knows this, and in fury and mad ness he is striving among the nations, inciting them to vice, crime and bloodshed. His infernal hosts are con centrating to make a final attack upon Christendom. The cross and the crescent. The Turk and the Christian, Christ and Belial, are about to decide who rules the world. In the meantime while the forces of evil are concentrating, the churches are sending out skirmishers, in detached columns, without combination or mutual fel lowship. There seems to be a wide breach between the Catholic and the Protestant. This is ominousl Is Christ the author of confusion and discord? Does not the Prince of Peace demand unity, harmony and fellowship among his followers? The churches can never conquer the world, the flesh, and the devil in detached columns. They must unite their forces. In one onward, united movement victory is assured. To secure this grand re sult, this unassuming volume is sent out to greet all whom it may meet, of every race. May a kind Providence give speed to its divine mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Missionary, Vol. 58: For the Year Ending April, 1886 God. When I came to Winter Park, a year ago last December, I was surprised and pained to see no colored people in the congregation Soon I had opportunity for conversation with a prominent colored man. I asked him how he felt toward the Northern churches. I was some what surprised at his reply. He said he had nothing against white churches, but he preferred to worship with his own people. He had no complaint to make. He took upon himself the responsibility of neglect, to attend white churches. The colored people have had religious ser vices more or less regularly, by themselves. One of the deacons of our Congregational church held a Sunday-school among them last summer. Recently, a general meeting of whites and colored was held, to plan for the building of a house to serve the double purpose of a church and} school-house. The whites pledged themselves to raise as much as the colored people would give, up to the sum of $200. The meeting ap pointed the two Congregational deacons and another prominent Con gregational member present trustees to receive the money and build the house. The work is well under way. One of the deacons has vol unteered to teach a free evening school. That will be in operation in a few days. The colored people are divided between two denominations, Baptist and Methodist. Each party is to have one of its own preachers, to serve a portion of the Sabbaths of each month. This is a work that. Is wholly practicable. Our colored brethren welcome it. The free evening school will soon become a public school. Public money can be had toward the support of a teacher. Money can be raised by subscrip tion. Is not this Christian common sense? Hungry for sabbath Wonsmp. - Although I have two and a half miles to go to our school-house, with the mercury 10 to 20 below, we have not missed a Sabbath service. Going to meeting for the worship of God becomes a habit, as. Well as a pleasure and a duty. Christians get hungry, and go to meeting for food; or they get tired, and go for rest. I try to make my people feel how blessed is the Sabbath, and the privi lege of worshiping God collectively, and hearing from him out of his Word. For this we have largely to thank the A. H. M. S. It is a richer mine of blessing to our country than its mines of silver and gold. I try to appreciate, and to make my people appreciate your Society. During the past quarter three members of my congregation have become personally interested in religion. - Rev. J. H. Gurney, Dover, Dale. On and on, while the chilling winds from the desolate shores of doubt vex and rock the whole sea of Christian truth, this influence keeps steadily flowing towards the frozen zones of heathenism. Already these Arctic shores of desolation and chill begin to shoot forth such verdure as grows upon the banks of the River of Life. Because of the recent revival of missionary activity in the Reformed Church we are in danger of forgetting that this candle never went out. There were times when it was burning low, but it was burning. Though its shining was in one of the lower windows of the temple, yet its light was none the less steady; and the highway along which it shone was so bright that no man needed to stumble therein if he were searching for the Light of Life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Heroes: Or United Brethren Home Missionaries It has not been our aim, in the preparation of the following chapters, to give a connected history of the Church, but rather to present briefly the lives of a few of the heroes who wrought so nobly in the early days of the various conferences named. Very much that the book contains never appeared in print before. This, no doubt, will interest the reader; and the Church at large, we are sure, will appreciate the fact that so much historical data have been gathered up and put into permanent form. A few years more, with others of the landmarks removed, and no little of this would have been lost beyond recovery. Our task has been both pleasant and difficult. Pleasant, because in studying pioneer achievements we were constantly in communion with the brave and good, and experienced the thrill of a new purpose in our own lives; difficult, owing to the fact that but few of our missionary frontiersmen kept a diary, or received extended notice through the Telescope, or other publications. Some of whom we have written deserve a much fuller notice than we were able to give them. When we began to survey the field of heroes, it soon became apparent that we could not, in our limited space, mention all who had been prominent in carving out the foundations on which those who followed them were to build. Many whose names do not appear were and are worthy in every respect. Be it far from any of us to covet their crowns. The reader will observe that east of the Mississippi River reference is made only to the fathers who have gone from us, while in the West several who are still living receive notice. In the older and more densely populated portions of the Church the number meriting recognition, of course, is much larger than in newer sections. The period covered in the East reaches back more than a century. In the West, Iowa excepted, the Church was not known prior to 1850. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Planting of the Church, Vol. 1 of 2: A Compendium of Missionary History; In Two Parts; Pre-Reformation Missions and Missionaries Conscious of many more imperfections than those which obtrude themselves, to dedicate this volume to any of the many to whom it should be dedicated would be presumption. To acknowledge indebtedness is another matter, and in sending out its pages there must first be inscribed some of the names without whom it would probably not have been written. My Grandfather's memory and his unfinished history have been a household possession since my earliest memory, and it was first of all from Bishop Williams, his great pupil, that the encouragement came which tempted me to follow even at such distance, in his footsteps. For help in preparation I must also record my indebtedness to Miss Smiley and the S. H. S. H. S., whose helpfulness in the course I took will ever be an inspiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Missionaries of the Church The cordial reception which has been given in England, as well as America, to "Great Missionaries," which was issued several years ago, has led to the preparation of this volume. Since the noble men whose life story is briefly told in these twenty-six sketches were nearly all of them founders of missions, if not makers of empires, the title "Pioneer Missionaries" seems the only one which clearly defines the scope of the book. If the writer had been so inclined, the limits of space would have prevented any embellishment It has not been an easy task to compress the main features of the biography of a great man "of whom the world is not worthy" into a single chapter, when one longs for two or three hundred pages to tell the thrilling story of toil and sacrifice and triumph. Brief as are these sketches, it is hoped they may be found to give the leading facts in the career of each of these missionary heroes, and that not a few of those who read the book, especially among the students in our colleges, may be inspired "to follow in their train." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Missionary, Vol. 62: May, 1889-April, 1890 What, then, is this trial of faith to-day.z It is not a milk-and - water controversy about the relation of faith and works. It is not a warrant for a selfish religion which concerns itself with saving one's own soul and get ting comfortably into the church. Faith is the living, aggressive, trium phant spirit of God incarnate in every representative of Caleb and Joshua. Faith is the dauntless, assured, glowing face of victory, always turned to new conquests. Faith lives and if it lives it spends its life with inex haustible fullness and freeness upon God's work and God's holy war. Faith always has a Jericho before it; a giant to be met; a Canaan to be conquered. It is faith that is always saying to the Church, Choose the shame of going back or the glory of going forward. It is faith that is always rebuking the minister for settling back into the moribund state of consulting mere human prudence, when God loves to be proven by great emergencies. It is faith that says again and again to every man Give, give. Give life, give time, give money; give, and prove God's promise that you shall never grow the poorer for giving. The men of faith cannot be mistaken. You cannot fail to know them by the way they throw themselves forward upon God's word. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messengers of the Churches: First Series; Seven Pioneer Missionaries; With Portraits and Illustrations This little volume is an effort to supply a lack of readily available information regarding some representative early missionaries. This want has been specially felt by Sunday Schools, Christian Endeavor Societies and Epworth Leagues, and also by general readers and many ministers. The names selected represent several Churches and countries, but they are of men marked by such catholicity of spirit as to be claimed by all Christians. We have started with the rise of our present-day missionary enterprises in the latter part of the eighteenth century, and hope, in future series, to trace the record towards our own times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Missionary Work From 1853 to 1889 In 1853, the Home, Frontier, and Foreign Missionary Society of the United Brethren in Christ was organized by the General Conference Of the church. This volume contains the history of the work per formed, with results tabulated at the end of each quadrennial term, so far as this could be done, in a statistical form. Some of the statements made, though not regarded as essential to the history, are inserted because they are interesting, and may be useful. Africa -has considerable space given it, for the reason that this is the most important mission of the society. It also did more to awaken missionary zeal in the Church than all others. This large continent, much of which is still in undisturbed heathenism, is now fully Open to missionaries, who should be sent by hundreds to redeem that dark land to Christ. Mr. Stanley, in his march of nine hundred and ninety-nine days from Zanzibar across the continent to the mouth of the Congo River, says that in all the fifty million people in the country through which he passed, not one had heard the gospel. The explorations and death of Livingstone, and the heroic sufferings of Stanley, through which the civilized world has obtained a more perfect knowledge of the sad condition of the people of that dark continent, have awakened much zeal and activity in its behalf. The cruelties endured by thousands of the people of Africa, growing out of the slave-trade, the rum-trafiic, cannibalism, offering human sacrifices, and the many superstitions of the people, as, for instance, witchcraft, should cause Christians to speedily give them the gospel. The history of our mission in Africa, as given in this volume, shows how truly the gospel is the power of God unto salvation; also how wonderfully, not to say miraculously, the Master has led our church in its work there. Our work in Germany, considering the small outlay of money, shows conclusively that God has been with us in the Fatherland. In the new states and territories of the United States, a good work has also been done by the society. In the department of home missions, great strength has been added to the Church, and many precious souls have been saved. As these are not under the control of the parent society.
