Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young girl growing up in Kansas, Martha Leiker always felt a pull toward Africa. She couldnt explain why, but she dreamed of working in Africa with the African people. In From Silence to Secrecy, Leiker narrates the story of how she made that dream come true. Leiker likens her life to that of a chameleonchanging easily from one lifestyle to another. This memoir follows those changes, beginning with her birth in 1940 in rural Kansas; her training as a nun with the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa in Pennsylvania; her work in Africa as a missionary for eight years; her twenty years of service with the CIA; and her current position with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) in Colorado. Including many fascinating photos, From Silence to Secrecy demonstrates how one young girl with a dream accomplished her goals and lived a life full of rich experiences. Leikers story shows how her faith, hope, inner strength, and dreams carried her far.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Algeria by : Phillip C. Naylor
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Algeria written by Phillip C. Naylor and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algeria’s strategic regional and global importance continues to grow. Its hydrocarbon wealth, namely natural gas and oil, is impressive and its receipts are crucial to the national economy. The European Union is a particularly valued hydrocarbon importer and overall commercial partner. The bilateral relationship with France remains problematic and paradoxical. Algeria has demanded an apology for the imposition of colonialism; but it also recognizes the importance of France economically, politically, and militarily, e.g., the unrest in the Sahel (notably Mali). Furthermore, Algeria continues to recover from its recent, tragic civil strife characterized by terrorism and extremism. Its uncertain future, given its ageing leadership, rentier economy, and frustrated youth, is a critical concern. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Algeria covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Algeria.
Book Synopsis Dictionary of Christianity by : J.C. Cooper
Download or read book Dictionary of Christianity written by J.C. Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1996. A comprehensive reference guide to saints, popes, martyrs, orders, heresies, schisms and religious movements and practices, the Dictionary of Christianity is an alphabetically-arranged volume of essential facts about Christianity and the Christian church. It includes: accounts of the lives of theologians, philosophers, and reformers whose works influenced the development of Christianity; biblical statistics and information about the chief editions of the Bible; the lives of saints, including their feast days; and details about offices and vestments, rituals and festivals. In recent years there has been an upsurge in ecumenical movements, and increased communication between Eastern and Western Catholics and Protestants. There has also been an increase in the membership of the Eastern Church in Western countries and, with the fall of Communism in Russia, a revival of the Russian Orthodox Church. In responseto this phenomena, the Dictionary of Christianity covers all the main branches of the Christian church. It will be an invaluable reference for all students of religion.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church by : Frank Leslie Cross
Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church written by Frank Leslie Cross and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 1842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable one-volume reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,000 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, including theology, churches and denominations, patristic scholarship, the bible, the church calendar and its organization, popes, archbishops, saints, and mystics. In this revision, innumerable small changes have been made to take into account shifts in scholarly opinion, recent developments, such as the Church of England's new prayer book (Common Worship), RC canonizations, ecumenical advances and mergers, and, where possible, statistics. A number of existing articles have been rewritten to reflect new evidence or understanding, for example the Holy Sepulchre entry, and there are a few new articles. Perhaps most significantly, a great number of the bibliographies have been updated. Established since its first appearance in 1957 as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, ODCC is an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.
Book Synopsis Church, State and Colonialism in Southeastern Congo, 1890–1962 by : Reuben A. Loffman
Download or read book Church, State and Colonialism in Southeastern Congo, 1890–1962 written by Reuben A. Loffman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between Catholic missionaries and the colonial administration in southeastern Belgian Congo. It challenges the perception that the Church and the state worked seamlessly together. Instead, using the territory of Kongolo as a case study, the book reconfigures their relationship as one of competitive co-dependency. Based on extensive archival research and oral histories, the book argues that both institutions retained distinct agendas that, while coinciding during certain periods, clashed on many occasions. The study begins by outlining the pre-colonial history of southeastern Congo. The second chapter examines how the Church began its encounters with the peoples in Kongolo and the Tanganyika province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Subsequent chapters highlight how missionaries exerted significant influence over the colonial construction of chieftainship and the politics of Congolese decolonization. The book ends in 1962, with the massacre of a number of Holy Ghost Fathers in an event that signaled the beginning of a more Africanized Church in Kongolo. ‘The author gratefully acknowledges support from the Economic and Social Research Council in the completion of this project.’
