Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Outlook in the Light of the War: The Committee on the War and the Religious Outlook I. The Committee on the War and the Religious Outlook and Its Work This volume is one in a series of studies that is being brought out by the Committee on the War and the Religious Outlook. The Committee was constituted, while the war was still in progress, by the joint action of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America and the General War-Time Commission of the Churches and was an expression of the conviction that the war had laid upon the Churches the duty of the most thorough self-examination. The Committee consisted of a small group of representative men and women of the various Protestant Churches, appointed "to consider the state of religion as revealed or affected by the war, with special reference to the duty and opportunity of the Churches, and to prepare these findings for submission to the Churches." While created through the initiative of the Federal Council and the General War-Time Commission, it was given entire freedom to act according to its own judgment and was empowered to add to its number. The Committee was originally organized with President Henry Churchill King as its Chairman and Professor William Adams Brown as Vice-Chairman. On account of prolonged absence in Europe, President King was compelled to resign the chairmanship in the spring of 1919 and Professor Brown became the Chairman of the group, with President King and Rev. Charles W. Gilkey as Vice-Chairmen. Rev. Samuel McCrea Cavert was chosen to serve as Secretary of the Committee and Rev. Angus Dun as Associate Secretary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Manifesto It is the custom of the Christian Church to Speak of the commission of Jesus, as though there were but one, which the four evangelists record in different words. This conception is the result of superficial Observation, and the measure in which it dominates our thinking is the measure in which we fail to recognize the spaciousness and inclusiveness of the missionary commission, and fail therefore to understand the real re. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Messages As indicated by the title, this book is, for the most part, composed of missionary messages which have been delivered by the author on various occasions. They are issued in the present form for the single purpose that they were at first delivered orally, namely, to quicken interest in Foreign Missions. In the main they have to do with Foreign Missions as a common Christian enterprise, but at points they deal specifically with the Baptist foreign mission program. There was in the delivery and there is here no disposition to evade the distinctive views and policies which characterize Southern Baptists and control their foreign mission work. An effort has been made to state the denominational viewpoint as inoffensively as frankly, and to use this to strengthen the foreign mission motive. No man ought to hold a religious opinion or alliance of which he is ashamed. Neither should one state his personal or denominational views in irreligious spirit or manner. Thoughtful men will agree that the only certain course to better understanding, mutual respect and concord among the Christian forces which are engaged In this commanding world enterprise of Foreign Missions is for each group to state with proper Christian decorum those views and principles which it holds and would have obtain in the conduct of the work and thus allow others to examine these on their merit. Respect of one Christian denomination for another will be promoted and that Christian unity, about which so much is said in foreign mission circles, will be the more certainly realized by clear and frank confession rather than by sentimental slurring of the comparatively few points of difference between the evangelical forces of Christendom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visions for Missionaries and Others This is simply a collection of Scripture Messages published in the Mission Field between 1906 and 1909, a previous volume having been published with the above title. The office I hold bids me enter daily into the trials and joys of many persons in many lands, all engaged in one work. And I have attempted, in some of the following pages, to expound Scripture through the medium of human lives as they prove by experience the truth of the written Word. It may be that here and there heart may answer to heart, albeit my characters are all of them creatures of imagination: yet none the less I. He was a great hearted, manly, Christian man, able, devoted, hard-working, and so beloved by all who came in contact with him that the papers said of him after he entered into life, what Motley said of William the Silent: When he died the little children cried in the streets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of the Missionary Concept Few men are as able and as qualified by travel and personal observation to discuss the mission fields of the world as Dr. Goucher, who delivered the last lectures of the Nathan Graves Foundation at Syracuse University. His clear, lucid style and convincing logic, and his absorbing interest in missions, invest these lectures with unusual interest and value to all who wish to study the subject of missions in its philosophical, its broadest, and its practical aspects. His discussion of China is at a time when that vast empire is awakening to Western thought and beginning earnestly to seek it, and also at a time when Western nations are commencing to appreciate that remarkable people. No people have contributed so much to their awakening as the missionaries of our own and other churches. Fifty years of sowing is being rewarded with clearly apparent verdure and promise of abundant grain. Along with appeals of salvation have been instructions and examples in the best forms of our civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Work of the Church in the West Among the favorable features are the open mindedness and open-heartedness Of our frontier people. The prairie winds and new environment seem to have swept away many Of their prejudices; and they are generally willing to give ideas and methods new to themselves a fair consideration and accept them on their merits. Far from the madding crowd and strenuous life Of cities, in close communion with nature and with nature's God they are more disposed to entertain and con sider religious matters. Again they are hospitable and generous according to their ability. They think lightly Of difficulties, and are extremely hope ful. These characteristics are favorable to the introduction Of the Church and her ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Missionary: Exemplified in the Life of Timothy Tms little volume, though written with a more particular reference to the young, is yet intended for persons of all ages. A crisis has arrived in the history of the church; and unless the apostolic or true missionary spirit can be made to prevail to a greater extent than it now does, fearful results await her. We know, indeed, that she is founded on a rock, and that the gates of hell can never wholly prevail. But we know, at the same time, that she may be subjected to severe, yea, tremendous trials; and may be driven, for a time, into the wilderness.
