Visit www.themissingsemester.com to read more testimonials from academic and financial professionals. Choices we make every day have financial consequences—in some cases, BIG financial consequences. Understanding these critical decisions requires understanding their long-term effects. The Missing Semester provides a short course on the essentials for making wise financial decisions and gaining financial freedom. Although designed with the recent college graduate in mind, The Missing Semester is relevant to a much wider audience. Those who bypassed college, or who are already in the working world, may better relate to some of the topics discussed. For those still in college or high school, this is a chance to get a head-start on peers and an independent life. The Missing Semester is based on the principle of ownership—ownership of your financial future. It begins with the premise that your financial future is your responsibility, and that you cannot plan for or expect help. The book shows how to build a strong financial foundation, prepare for the unexpected, and confront challenges.

Only riding the train to avoid flying to a conference for a presentation all but guaranteeing tenure, she attracts the attention of another passenger. This other passenger just so happens to be a mysteriously handsome man traveling with a precocious eight-year-old boy. Accompanying his nephew, not allowed to fly due to a medical condition, businessman Gregory St. Clair takes the train home to Denver. Typically he would fly, but as fate would have it, he meets Hallie Monroe and falls instantly head over heels. Even though Gregory does not normally date, he has no lack of confidence with women. Their romance buds quickly, but with a thousand miles between their everyday lives, that budding relationship lacks the foundation to take root. Gregory, however, will not be deterred. He has a plan. But will Hallie and Gregory make the choice and do what it takes to overcome the barriers of distance keeping them apart? Full of romance and heart, this charming instalove romance is another engaging sweet meet-cute novel from Kathryn Kaleigh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the extent and causes of attrition and retention in university Language & Culture (L&C) programs through a detailed analysis of an institutional case study at The Australian National University (ANU). Using extensive data collected through student surveys, coupled with data mining of university-wide enrolment data, the authors explore the enrolment and progress of students in all ANU L&C programs. Through their detailed statistical analysis of attrition and retention outcomes, the authors reveal serious inadequacies in the traditional, and common, methodology for determining the extent of student attrition and retention in tertiary L&C programs. Readers are shown why a year-to-year comparison of students who continue or discontinue language studies using traditional statistical methodology cannot provide data that is sufficiently meaningful to allow for sound policy- and decision-making. The authors instead suggest a more valid, replicable methodology that provides a new approach potentially applicable to all disciplines and all student retention measures. The authors also demonstrate that the empirical data supports a new hypothesis for the reasons for attrition, based on students’ relative belief or doubt in their capacity to complete their studies successfully. By highlighting the importance of language capital as a factor in students’ concerns about their capacity for success, and hence in their decisions to stay in, or leave, a university language program, the authors show the importance of the ‘doubters’ dilemma’. By taking a rigorous approach to hypothesis building and testing around enrolment and attrition data, the authors provide valuable insights into attrition issues, and potential retention strategies, in L&C programs, which will be relevant to institutions, policy-makers and teaching academics.

Tomlinson shows how to use students' readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles to address student diversity.
