This book was released on 1989-04-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These treatises, written in the year of Bunyan's death, 1688, are edited from the first editions: one of which was published in his lifetime, the others posthumously. Variations in the traditional typological method of biblical interpretation, they concentrate on Old Testament events as prophecies that eventually found fulfillment in the New Testament. Solomon's Temple, his House of the Forest of Lebanon, and the water flowing from beneath the altar of the Temple, help to demonstrate how these are all shadows of the true reality to come in the life and faith of Christ. In a wider context, the book provides examples of another kind of "similitude"--the creative techniques by which Bunyan sought to capture the imagination, and which encompasses simile, metaphor, emblem, symbol, analogy, and above all, allegory.

Book excerpt: This tenth volume in a twelve-volume series offers reliable and modern scholarly texts for two treatises by Bunyan published when persecution of nonconformists was reaching a fierce climax. Seasonable Counsel presents Bunyan's reflections on how believers ought to understand and respond to that experience, while A Discourse upon the Pharisee and the Publicane discusses the parable in Luke xviii and provides Bunyan's ultimate thoughts on justification by faith. The introduction to the volume relates Bunyan's arguments to their historical and religious context.

Book excerpt: This third volume in a twelve-volume series provides reliable, modern scholarly texts for three important but lesser-known works, all of which were written in the mid-1660s, early in Bunyan's career, while he was imprisoned in Bedford. Christian Behaviour is a manual of the good works required of the Christians towards their families and neighbors, The Holy City a rapturous meditation on the millennial kingdom of Christ, and The Resurrection of the Dead a defense of the doctrine of bodily resurrection. Each presents themes later developed in Bunyan's famous allegories, offering insight into the development of Bunyan's thought and the background of his greatest achievements.

Book excerpt: A Legacy of Preaching, Volume One--Apostles to the Revivalists explores the history and development of preaching through a biographical and theological examination of its most important preachers. Instead of teaching the history of preaching from the perspective of movements and eras, each contributor tells the story of a particular preacher in history, allowing the preachers from the past to come alive and instruct us through their lives, theologies, and methods of preaching. Each chapter introduces readers to a key figure in the history of preaching, followed by an analysis of the theological views that shaped their preaching, their methodology of sermon preparation and delivery, and an appraisal of the significant contributions they have made to the history of preaching. This diverse collection of familiar and lesser-known individuals provides a detailed and fascinating look at what it has meant to communicate the gospel over the past two thousand years. By looking at how the gospel has been communicated over time and across different cultures, pastors, scholars, and homiletics students can enrich their own understanding and practice of preaching for application today. Volume One covers the period from the apostles to the revivalists and profiles thirty preachers including: Paul by Eric Rowe Peter by David R. Beck Melito of Sardis by Paul A. Book excerpt: Limited Time Promotional Offer John Bunyan's Poetry - Classic Poetry Series From the author of the best-selling book "The Pilgrims Progress, John Bunyan's classical poems will delight you and capture your emotions. John Bunyan's Poetry will help you to express yourself in a deep and profound way. John Bunyan's Poetry possesses "powerful healing qualities" through its ability to acknowledge and express your innermost thoughts and emotions, increasing your self-worth and allowing you to cope with certain life issues. About John Bunyan: John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born at Elstow, England, about a mile from Bedford, and became one of the most influential authors of the seventeenth century. Few writers in history have left such a wealth of Christ-centered writings. Bunyan's moving conversion is recorded in his Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. While walking the streets of Bedford, Bunyan heard "three or four poor women" sitting at a door, "talking about the new birth, the work of God in their hearts, and the way by which they were convinced of their miserable state by nature. They told how God had visited their souls with His love in Christ Jesus, and with what words and promises they had been refreshed, comforted, and supported against the temptations of the devil. From these godly women Bunyan learned to despise sin and to hunger for the Savior. Later, while passing into the fields, he recounts, "This sentence fell upon my soul, 'Thy righteousness is in heaven'... for my righteousness was Jesus Christ Himself, the same yesterday, today, and forever." Then "his chains fell off," and he went home rejoicing. Calling to Preach and Arrest In 1655, Bunyan was called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bunyan was arrested November 12, 1660, for preaching without the approval of the Anglican Church. He was charged with "teaching men to worship God contrary to the law" and was in jail more than twelve years. His most well-known work, The Pilgrim's Progress, was written while in the Bedford jail. During Bunyan's lifetime there were 100,000 copies circulated in the British isles, besides several editions in North America. It has been continuously in print since its first printing. Bunyan's remarkable imagery was firmly rooted in the biblical doctrines of man's fall, grace, imputation, justification, and the atonement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last half-century, early scholarly approaches and analysis of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress have seen siginificant advances in mandating and enabling a more contextualized view of Bunyan’s oeuvre. Utilizing this fresh examination of context, John Bunyan’s Imaginary Writings in Context explores Bunyan’s writings in a double context: his fictional works vis-à-vis his own non-fictional writings, and his fictional writings in the context of written materials by other authors – books, tracts, spiritual biographies, and poems available to Bunyan. This volumepresents these recent developments by blurring the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction, between literature and history, and in the case of Bunyan, between imaginative literatures in fiction and theological writing. Moreover, this book aims to delineate the imaginary world underlying Bunyan’s fictional writings by viewing Bunyan’s own fictional works in tandem with his non-fiction writings. Simultaneously it situates aspects of Bunyan’s fiction in the context of writings available to him, whether these be Holy Scripture, religious tracts by other authors, or ballads and short texts current in the wider culture of the time.
