He had, in fact, been christened plain John but finding the appellation unsatisfying, he replaced it by the three Simple letters which gave him at once a distinction in his small circle, which the circle did not hesitate to inform him was the only one he would ever possess. This book is a passionate call for citizen action to uphold the rule of law when government does not. Arguing that post-9/11 legislation and foreign policy severed the executive branch from the will of the people, Elaine Scarry in Rule of Law, Misrule of Men offers a fierce defense of the people's role as guarantor of our democracy. She begins with the groundswell of local resistance to the 2001 Patriot Act, when hundreds of towns, cities, and counties passed resolutions refusing compliance with the information-gathering the act demanded, showing that citizens can take action against laws that undermine the rights of citizens and noncitizens alike. Scarry, once described in the New York Times Sunday Magazine as “known for her unflinching investigations of war, torture, and pain,” then turns to the conduct of the Iraqi occupation, arguing that the Bush administration led the country onto treacherous moral terrain, violating the Geneva Conventions and the armed forces' own most fundamental standards. She warns of the damage done to democracy when military personnel must choose between their own codes of warfare and the illegal orders of their civilian superiors. If our military leaders uphold the rule of law when civilian leaders do not, might we come to prefer them? Finally, reviewing what we know now about the Bush administration's crimes, Scarry insists that prosecution—whether local, national, or international—is essential to restoring the rule of law, and she shows how a brave town in Vermont has taken up the challenge. Throughout the book, Scarry finds hope in moments where citizens withheld their consent to grievous crimes, finding creative ways to stand by their patriotism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Name any industry and more likely than not you will find that the three strongest, most efficient companies control 70 to 90 percent of the market. Here are just a few examples: McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's General Mills, Kellogg, and Post Nike, Adidas, and Reebok Bank of America, Chase Manhattan, and Banc One American, United, and Delta Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol-Myers Squibb Based on extensive studies of market forces, the distinguished business school strategists and corporate advisers Jagdish Sheth and Rajendra Sisodia show that natural competitive forces shape the vast majority of companies under "the rule of three." This stunning new concept has powerful strategic implications for businesses large and small alike. Drawing on years of research covering hundreds of industries both local and global, The Rule of Three documents the evolution of markets into two complementary sectors -- generalists, which cater to a large, mainstream group of customers; and specialists, which satisfy the needs of customers at both the high and low ends of the market. Any company caught in the middle ("the ditch") is likely to be swallowed up or destroyed. Sheth and Sisodia show how most markets resemble a shopping mall with specialty shops anchored by large stores. Drawing wisdom from these markets, The Rule of Three offers counterintuitive insights, with suggested strategies for the "Big 3" players, as well as for mid-sized companies that may want to mount a challenge and for specialists striving to flourish in the shadow of industry giants. The book explains how to recognize signs of market disruptions that can result in serious reversals and upheavals for companies caught unprepared. Such disruptions include new technologies, regulatory shifts, innovations in distribution and packaging, demographic and cultural shifts, and venture capital as well as other forms of investor funding. Years in the making and sweeping in scope, The Rule of Three provides authoritative, research-based insights into market dynamics that no business manager should be without.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rule Against Perpetuities Although only eight years have passed since the publica tion of the second edition, about three hundred and eighty new cases on the Rule against Perpetuities (not including those in New York) have been decided during that time, many of them of considerable interest; and my views have altered or developed on several points. Notwithstanding an increase in the average contents of a page, there has been a material addition to the number of pages of the text and of the Appendix. If this had been the first edition of this work, I should un doubtedly have adopted a more consecutive and compact ar rangement in several respects than it now exhibits. It has seemed to me, however, to be advantageous to the reader to retain in the present edition a form which shows the develop ment not only of the law but of the author's views during a period of twenty-eight years. Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distinctions and Anomalies, Arising Out of the Equitable Doctrine of the Legal Estate The endeavour at the same time made to deal with the matter upon principle, and more especially to find an intel ligible basis for the doctrines of the priority of the legal estate and tacking, may also be of some practical utility. The ascertainment of principles is of importance as well to the study of the law, as to its successful amendment1 and judicial development. If the explanation of tacking here advanced be the true one, it will appear that there has been in recent times a tendency of the courts to extend in more than one direction that justly reprobated doctrine, which, however, ao cording to the accepted judicial axiom is to be applied only within the bare limits of the old authorities which established it. But if the theories put forward should prove upon further investigation not to be sustainable, they may perhaps claim the merit appertaining to hypotheses in general, that they are necessary steps to something more certain. Perhaps too the statement as a whole of equitable doctrine concerning the legal estate as it now stands - its intricacy, its fortuitous results, its occasional injustice, its technicality and immaturities - may help to make more clear the urgency of the case for the legislative reform of English property law. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 1824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This epic poem written by Dante Alighieri between c. 1308 and his death in 1321 is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The Divine Comedy serves as the physical (scientific), political, and spiritual guidebook of Dante's Fourteenth Century universe. The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the afterlife is a culmination of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church. It helped establish the Tuscan dialect, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents allegorically the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called "the Summa in verse". Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321), was a major Italian poet of the Late Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa (modern Italian: Commedia) and later christened Divina by Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language.
