Book excerpt: In the annals of human history, there have been very few battles fought which decide, not only the outcome of wars, but the fate of nations for generations to come. The battle fought at the tiny Village of Plattsburgh, New York, was such a contest. The land and naval Battle at Plattsburgh decided who would control all of North America, and whether or not the Republic of the United States of America would live or die. Would the concepts of the liberty and the equality of man survive, or be dashed to bits after only twenty-four years of life? The very existence of the American Nation hung in the balance on Sunday morning, September 11th, 1814. The defeat of Napoleon, released tens of thousands of seasoned British Troops into the American war theater. Now off the planning table, invasion of the United States of America became a reality. The northern mission of Britain's three pronged plan, to divide and conquer America, was by invasion from Canada at the upper end of Lake Champlain. The British Army in massive strength, some 15,000 strong, crossed the US border on the 1st. of September, 1814, and headed straight for New York City via Albany. The only obstacle in their path was the tiny Village of Plattsburgh, N.Y., located on the upper western shore of Lake Champlain. The village was defended by untested regulars, and local militias made up farmers, tradesmen, young boys and old men, with a total strength of 4500. Lake Champlain was defended by a 31 year old Naval Lieutenant, who was forced to build his own ships, and train his own sailors, because there was no US Naval presences on Lake Champlain, prior to his arrival in the area. This small force was all that stood against the army that had defeated Napoleon, and the naval veterans who had destroyed the French at Trafalgar. What you are about to read is the greatest adventure story in American History. The incredible, almost unbelievable story of how a 32 year old Army Engineering Officer with 4500 men, and a 31 year old Navy Lieutenant with a pine-sap fleet, and even greener sailors, defeated the grandest army since Imperial Rome, and saved a nation. The story that can only be described as "THE MIRACLE AT PLATTSBURGH"

Book excerpt: A close examination of the history, accomplishments, and potential of the State University of New York system. The State University of New York is America’s largest comprehensive public university system, with sixty-four campuses, including community colleges, colleges of technology, university colleges, research universities, medical schools, academic medical centers, and specialized campuses in fields as diverse as optometry, ceramics, horticulture, fashion, forestry, and maritime training. Despite its reputation for wide access, demanding academic programs, vital public services, and cutting-edge research, little has been written about its fascinating history. Originating in a lively conference held in spring 2009 to mark SUNY’s sixtieth anniversary, the book’s authors examine SUNY’s origins, political landscape, evolving mission, institutional variety, international partnerships, leadership, and more. Taking its place alongside studies of state systems such as those in California, Michigan, and Texas, this book is a long overdue effort to return SUNY to the national conversation about public higher education during the last half century. Edited by a former interim chancellor of the system and two SUNY history professors, and with a foreword by current Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the problems and promise of public higher education in New York State, or, indeed, anywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another history pageturner from the authors of the #1 bestsellers George Washington's Secret Six and Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates. The War of 1812 saw America threatened on every side. Encouraged by the British, Indian tribes attacked settlers in the West, while the Royal Navy terrorized the coasts. By mid-1814, President James Madison’s generals had lost control of the war in the North, losing battles in Canada. Then British troops set the White House ablaze, and a feeling of hopelessness spread across the country. Into this dire situation stepped Major General Andrew Jackson. A native of Tennessee who had witnessed the horrors of the Revolutionary War and Indian attacks, he was glad America had finally decided to confront repeated British aggression. But he feared that President Madison’s men were overlooking the most important target of all: New Orleans. If the British conquered New Orleans, they would control the mouth of the Mississippi River, cutting Americans off from that essential trade route and threatening the previous decade’s Louisiana Purchase. The new nation’s dreams of western expansion would be crushed before they really got off the ground. So Jackson had to convince President Madison and his War Department to take him seriously, even though he wasn’t one of the Virginians and New Englanders who dominated the government. He had to assemble a coalition of frontier militiamen, French-speaking Louisianans,Cherokee and Choctaw Indians, freed slaves, and even some pirates. And he had to defeat the most powerful military force in the world—in the confusing terrain of the Louisiana bayous. In short, Jackson needed a miracle. The local Ursuline nuns set to work praying for his outnumbered troops. And so the Americans, driven by patriotism and protected by prayer, began the battle that would shape our young nation’s destiny. As they did in their two previous bestsellers, Kilmeade and Yaeger make history come alive with a riveting true story that will keep you turning the pages. You’ll finish with a new understanding of one of our greatest generals and a renewed appreciation for the brave men who fought so that America could one day stretch “from sea to shining sea.”

It is a celebration of a passion both ageless and timeless, a tale of laughter and tears, and makes us believe in true love all over again. At thirty-one, Noah Calhoun is rebuilding his life on the coast after the horrors of World War II, but he is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier. Allie Nelson is about to marry into wealth and security, but she cannot stop thinking about the boy who stole her heart years ago. And so begins an extraordinary tale of a love so strong it turns tragedy into strength and endures everything . . . 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the film adaptation of The Notebook starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. This new edition includes gorgeous colour photographs from the film, author Q & A, discussion questions and an exclusive chapter from The Longest Ride, the new Nicholas Sparks novel.

Book excerpt: "Paul and Mary...Tea for Two!" is a memoir of Paul Kennedy and Mary Ryan who met as school children in the 1920's. They eloped to Canada in 1929 and had a family of eight children over 22 years. They survived World War I, The Crash of 1929, The Great Depression, World War II, The Baby Boom, Korean War, the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, and for Mary the New Millennium. They met with historical crises and personal tragedies bolstered by their faith in God, love of Family, and undaunted work ethic. Married for fifty five years they left an indelible mark on this world bequeathing the heart and soul of humanity to their offspring. Do not pray for easy lives! Pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work will not need a miracle but You shall be the miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself and the richness of life that comes in you by the grace of God. Phillips Brooks, 1925

Book excerpt: This is the true story of a societal renegade and his ambition to find contentment. After months of emotional turmoil and self-righteous disdain for commonality, he walked off campus with a ruck-sack, intending to begin living purposefully. On his way toward the east coast, he pulled off an I-87 exit in upstate New York to take a spiritual sabbatical in the beautiful landscapes of the Adirondack Mountains. After a week of meditation and mental catharsis, he continued toward the east coast, making a detour through Montreal where he would be unjustly arrested. The Prison Chronicles is an enthralling discord detailing the clash between heinous violence and dehumanization among addicts, fiends, thieves, and murderers and the enduring good in all people-convicts and samaritans alike. Writing with a tenacious yet graceful fervor, Lawrence evokes a heartfelt revelation in the reader as he describes a gratitude for home and reverence for life with the culmination of his first novel.
