Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of the Word and Sacraments England to the ministry of the Word and Sacra ments respectively. Similarly with the Ordering of Priests. The same proportion is here maintained as in the Ordering of Deacons. Priests are to be replen ished with the truth of Christ's doctrine for the edification of His Church. In the Epistle chosen for the Ordinal the title priest does not occur, as, indeed, it occurs nowhere in the New Testa ment as a distinctive designation of Christ's ministers. But the ordinand priest is reminded in the Epistle of the early titles of the ministers of Christ's Gospel. Some were apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers. And the work of the ministry of all, whatever their title, was the building up of the Body of Christ in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God. The dignity and excellency of the priest's office is declared especi ally to be to teach and to feed the Lord's family. And forasmuch as the doing of so weighty a work cannot be compassed except with doctrine and exhortation taken out of Holy Scriptures, and with a life agreeable to the same, the ordinand priest is most earnestly admonished how studious he ought to be in reading and learning the Scriptures. The means whereby he may wax riper and stronger in his ministry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Ministry For the attainment of these God-appointed ideals, one of the God-appointed means, and the chief, is the ministry of the Word of God by the man of God. And in the prosecution of this ministry, the ideals of it we hang up in our sky, if worthy, though they may shame our past, will nevertheless prove incentives to higher things. So that idealizing in the ministry is not theorizing, nor ballooning, nor getting lost in the clouds. It is lifting a standard. In the reverent use of apostolic words, it is forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, and pressing on towards the goal unto the prize of an ideal ministry in Christ Jesus. That this book may be helpful to such a ministry and stimulative to homiletic effectiveness, is the hope and prayer of the author. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of English literature, church ministers have figured prominently in novels, plays, morality tales, and even poetry. Pastors in the Classics is a unique, unprecedented collection of relevant literary masterpieces in which the pastor's experience is a major part of the story. Part 1 is a reader's guide to twelve important classics written over four centuries and covering seven different nationalities. Each chapter not only describes and interprets the work in question, it also highlights a specific feature of pastoral ministry explored in the work. Part 2 is a handbook that defines the canon of literary masterpieces that deal with the pastor's experience, offering reading suggestions for both ministers and lovers of literature. From the familiar (The Canterbury Tales; Cry, the Beloved Country; and The Scarlet Letter) to the lesser-known (Silence, Witch Wood) to the surprising (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), this collection uncovers the good, the bad, and the ugly ways in which pastors have been presented to the reading public for the past half millennium.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Word of Life: Being Selections From the Work of a Ministry It has long seemed to me that the style proper to the pulpit - and especially for Discourses not read - differs considerably from what has usually been thought the fittest for the press. Certainly many sermons that were listened to with deep and solemn interest, delivered with the freedom of manner befitting the pulpit, may be apt to appear comparatively tame when reproduced in the pages of a book. Great words of Scripture, for instance, which, uttered with the warm living voice, formed a large and important part of the preaching, may wear an aspect not a little different when read in a printed page; and many a word of fervent appeal, entreaty, expostulation, thrown in extemporaneously in the progress of a Discourse, may scarce admit of being reproduced at all. Hence, in part, a difficulty I have long felt in complying with the wishes of friends as to publishing some selections from the work of a long ministry. My mode also of studying for the pulpit, together with the state of my manuscripts, bearing a close relation to it, has repeatedly stopped me in the attempt to prepare a series of Discourses for the press. Having at length, so far at least, overcome these difficulties, I desire humbly to commit the present volume to the gracious Lord, beseeching Him that He will vouchsafe to use it to His own glory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elder and His Work SO necessary is the eldership for the superintend ence of a congregation that practical wisdom would demand it even if Scripture did not provide it. In ordinary congregations it is physically impossible for the ministers to do all that is needful, or they must cease to give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. It is expected that our ministers shall prepare two sermons or lectures ev ery week, and that these Shall be the result Of much study and thought. We do not enter on the ques tion whether this is reasonable in all circumstances, or for spiritual edification; we merely take things as they are. And besides the weekly preparation of two discourses the minister is expected to visit his whole flock in succession, especially attending to the sick. Then he has other duties as a public ser vant of Christ. It is therefore utterly impossible for him, singly and alone, to care for several hun dred souls as they ought to be cared for. First the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear was never meant to be the exhaustive, all comprehensive statement of the method of Christian progress. You and I are not vegetables and the Parable of the Seed is only one side of the truth about the method of Christian growth. The very word purify speaks to us of another condition it implies impurity, it implies a process which is more than contemplation, it implies the reversal of existing conditions, and not merely the growth upwards to unattained conditions. And so growth is not all that Christian men need they need excision, they need casting out of what is in them they need change as well as growth. Purifying. Those who do not with careless indifference disregard everything but present pleasures and present profit, all those who really seek permanent good for all men, cannot but desire to have a sure guide to that good. There is one society in the world, and but one, which already possesses that good, and has divine security for its enduring and everlasting glory; and that society is the true Church Of Christ. The object of this treatise is to induce the reader to join truly and fully this blessed com. Pany, and to partake of their present security and their everlasting blessedness the sure guide is nothing less than God's own word, and the promised aid of his own Spirit given to them that ask. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beauty of God: As Revealed in His Works, His Written Word, and the Living Word Through the Ministry of Life and Light and Love The trend of scholarship in our day is looking toward the unseen world, out of which comes the world of the senses. The transformation of the invisible into the visible is SO ethereal that the learned in all countries and in all ages have been divided in their views concerning the real and substantial; some holding that the immaterial alone is real, and others that only the material is substantial. The weight Of authority oscillates between these extreme views. After swinging more than a generation toward the things that are seen, the pendulum Of scientific thought is now moving toward those that are not seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evangelist: His Ministry and Message There is a disposition in these times to belittle the work and the office of the evangelist. We can understand this, so far as the modernists are concerned, because the whole appeal of the true evangelist is to the saving power of God in Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit. His only message is the gospel. The modernist either denies or has lost faith (if he ever had any) in the gospel. He denies the necessity of being born again. His message is character, not calvary. His appeal is not to the Holy Spirit and His work of convicting of sin, and persuading and enabling the Sinner to believe in Jesus Christ as his one and only Saviour. He appeals to the will and self-respect of man, so we can understand the modernist's position and attitude to the evangelist and evangelistic work. In addition to the opposition of the modernists, there is a tendency in many churches to criticize and belittle the evangelists, and to ignore them in all church plans, or to encourage the pastors to carry on evangelistic campaigns Without them. This is contrary to the Word of God and the historical practice of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
