Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of the Word and Sacraments England to the ministry of the Word and Sacra ments respectively. Similarly with the Ordering of Priests. The same proportion is here maintained as in the Ordering of Deacons. Priests are to be replen ished with the truth of Christ's doctrine for the edification of His Church. In the Epistle chosen for the Ordinal the title priest does not occur, as, indeed, it occurs nowhere in the New Testa ment as a distinctive designation of Christ's ministers. But the ordinand priest is reminded in the Epistle of the early titles of the ministers of Christ's Gospel. Some were apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers. And the work of the ministry of all, whatever their title, was the building up of the Body of Christ in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God. The dignity and excellency of the priest's office is declared especi ally to be to teach and to feed the Lord's family. And forasmuch as the doing of so weighty a work cannot be compassed except with doctrine and exhortation taken out of Holy Scriptures, and with a life agreeable to the same, the ordinand priest is most earnestly admonished how studious he ought to be in reading and learning the Scriptures. The means whereby he may wax riper and stronger in his ministry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meditations on the Sacraments and Christian Life for Priests and Seminarians Passion, and Death. We have won everything! The great gain in the Christian life is to see the Word of the Father in all things. The center of this retreat will be the sacraments. We will conceive them as the Fathers of the Church did, and as the new liturgy decree says, verbs Verbi. We will not express them as many people do in considering the mass and the sacraments as a gas station. They run in to get gas for one week, then they can run their life. We will consider the sacraments in their fullness. They are the power to transform our life, but we must first con sider them as verba Verbi. Christ Himself in His powerful pre sence preaches and brings the Good Tidings to us. It is not Just a 2000 year old message coming from afar. It is the Lord Himself speaking to us within the Church in the power of His death and resurrection. The church is first of all, as the Constitution on the Church says, the fundamental sacrament, the great sign, the great Word of Love that continues the message of Christ, where Christ Himself preaches His Gospel. Book excerpt: In The Church, Donald G. Bloesch explores with clarity and balance the contours of ecclesiology. He forthrightly takes up the most controversial of issues ranging from matters of church authority, the sacraments and worship to the church's place in the plan of salvation, the church and the kingdom of heaven, and church reunion. Evangelical in spirit, ecumenical in breadth and biblical in depth, Bloesch's work presents a theology of the church that calls for reformation and renewal according to the Word and Spirit of God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Sacraments: Or Scriptural Views of Baptism and the Lord's Supper The Author has endeavored to give to the following Treatise as little of a controversial character as he could, consistently with the object which he had in view. Truth stands opposite to error; and to make their contrast seen and felt, it is sometimes desirable to present both. To this, the Author has been almost resistlessly led by the force of circumstances; and it will be readily perceived that the considerations, which induced him to present what he conscientiously believed to be erroneous views on the subject, which he has treated, bound him, at the same time, to present them, not in his own, but in the language of their advocates. He has, however, endeavored to quote fairly, and has honestly sought to put the Theories, which he opposes, in a light which their advocates must acknowledge to be just: and, having done this, he has busied himself with those Theories, and not with the men who hold them. Against their views he has spoken strongly: against the men he has said nothing. He readily concedes to them, what he is desirous may be conceded to himself, - honesty and sincerity in the views embraced, and solicitude to promote the best interest of the Gospel and Church of Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Hodge viewed Calvin's doctrine of the union of believers with Christ's humanity in the Lord's Supper as an uncongenial foreign element in Calvin's thought, having no root in the system. Robert L. Dabney found Calvin's doctrine to be a strange opinion, which he had to reject because it is not only incomprehensible, but impossible. Were these eminent theologians correct, or did they miss the genius of Calvin's thinking at this point? Back in print at last, Ronald Wallace's classic study is a careful examination of Calvin's Commentaries, Institutes, Sermons, and Tracts, designed to clarify the teaching of the great Reformer. The following two sentences from the preface aptly sum up the author's intention: ÒWhat is most important in the study of Calvin today is to reveal what the Reformer himself actually said, in order that misconceptions about his teaching may be cleared away. Therefore this work is not a critical study of Calvin, but an attempt to express his teaching as copiously, fairly, and sympathetically as possible. Dr. Wallace's book is also valuable for the insight it gives into Calvin's method of interpreting Scripture, especially the Old Testament.

This sourcebook provides key theological texts that played a role in those movements. Johnson traces the history and theology of individual sacraments along with their liturgical context in the church's worship. He includes materials previously developed in James F. White's classic collection, Documents of Christian Worship: Descriptive and Interpretive Sources (Westminster John Knox Press, 1992), and supplements these to provide a wide range of indispensible materials. He also contributes helpful background notes to give the reader the full breadth and depth of the church's thought on these important topics. This book will be of great value to those studying the history of Christian worship and the development of the sacraments.

The life of man may be said to be an unbroken series of proofs of love and gifts of grace bestowed on him by God. These graces are, for instance, life, which God was in no Wise bound to give us, health, the favorable circumstances in which He placed us at our birth, the powers of our soul. Every good thing which man receives from God is a grace, because he can Claim nothing from God; all is bestowed on him out of pure bounty.
