Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hayden's Researches of Masonry The new Grand Lodge directed George Payne, who had been elected its Grand Master, to collect all the documents, manuscripts, charters, rituals, etc., relating to the ancient usages of the fraternity, for the purpose of connecting them with the registers and anglo-saxon deeds written in the Gothic and Latin languages, and of the whole to form a body of laws and doctrines, and to publish so much of the same as might be judged proper and necessary. After the careful examination of all these deeds, and a report made of their subjects by a commission composed of fourteen brethren, chosen from the most erudite Masons of London, the Grand Lodge directed that brother Dr. Anderson, a doctor of philo Sophy and eminent minister of the Presbyterian Church at London, compile from these documents a constitution to be preceded by a history of the corporation, which would in the future serve as a guide to modern Free masonry. Brother Anderson, having acquitted himself of the task, in 1722, submitted his work to the commission, who approved it, and caused it to be sanctioned by the Grand Lodge on the 25th of March, 1723. This constitution is entitled, The Book of Constitutions for Freemasons, Containing the History, Charges, and Regulations, etc., of that Most Ancient and Right Worshipful Fraternity for the Use of the Lodges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Brick Presbyterian Church: In the City of New York This history has been prepared, at the request of the trustees of the Brick Church, in the hope that it will interest the large number Of people who are bound to the church by ties of the past or Of the present, and those, also, whose interest in the history of the Christian Church at large will incline them to an examination of any important chapter of it. The author wishes, especially, that the volume might come into the hands of some of the young men who are about to choose among the various professions for their life-work, for it seems to him that a history like that of the Brick Church sets forth in an emphatic way the great opportunity which the Christian ministry Offers in our time. The author has himself been so much impressed, as the facts of the history have unfolded before him, by the variety Of interests with which he has been called upon to deal, the breadth of scope which the history has pre sented, and the close relation which it has disclosed, especially in the record of later years, between the specific work of the minister and some of the prob lems which most perplex our time and whose solu tion will most profoundly affect the future of our country and. Of the world, that he cannot doubt but others will be impressed in the same way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The ethics and philosophy of Freemasonry depend on monotheistic religions and the ancient constitution of the Freemasons. The constitution describes the rules and rituals that members must follow. Some of the ceremonies incorporate stonemasonry tools, which symbolize not only the construction of Solomon’s Temple, but also the forging of partnerships. While masonic practices are cloaked in secrecy, this collection gathers the best-known sources portraying the statutes, laws, symbols, rituals, and customs of Masonic societies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fragments That Remain From the Ministry of Maltbie Davenport Babcock, Pastor Brick Church, New York City, 1899-1901 During the years that have passed since Dr. Babcock closed his eyes on this earthly scene, to open them in the full glory of his Master's presence, there has been a constantly expressed regret that no record of his sermons has been preserved. The present volume is composed of notes taken - not in short hand - and written out immediately after the service by the aid of a retentive memory, for private use, and with no thought of publication. No one can be more keenly aware of their limitations than the writer. Notwithstanding the fact that many who were accustomed to sit under Dr. Babcock's ministry have assured her that as they read they seem again to hear his voice and see his form, she has hesitated to put them into permanent form, hoping that other, fuller and better manuscripts might be forthcoming. But as several years have elapsed, and no other series of his sermons seems to be in existence, and no sufficiently legible original manuscript has been discovered, she has at length consented to publish these notes. During Dr. Babcock's ministry she was not a member of the Brick Church, and cannot account for the peculiar circumstances which drew her there and constrained her to take and preserve these notes, unless it was a providential leading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. As Argentina's Dirty War unfolds around them, their sometimes hilarious misadventures are soon replaced by something much darker. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today some six million Freemasons around the world continue to perform their rituals regularly – an enormous legacy of spiritual endeavour, kept largely in secret. In Britain alone there are over 7,000 lodges, with a quarter of a million members. What is this wealth, this appeal, and how did the philosopher and spiritual scientist Rudolf Steiner reinterpret or reconstruct Freemasonry’s time-worn legacy? Unless one is a Freemason, the masonic world, with its arcane conventions and language, remains largely unknown: an obscurity that is almost impossible to fathom. Yet understanding its traditions and style are invaluable when approaching Goethe, Mozart, Herder, Lessing and Novalis – as well as Rudolf Steiner. Steiner himself renewed the ‘Royal Art’ of Freemasonry from 1906 to 1914 through his ritual work known as Mystica Æterna. When Steiner invigorated education, medicine, the social order and religion, he fully intended that committed and professional individuals should assume responsibility for the new initiatives. But this was not the case with the Masonic Order he founded, whose leadership he took upon himself. Even the celebration of his passing in 1925, led by Marie Steiner, was entirely Masonic in character. In the context of continuing resistance and misrepresentation, N.V.P. Franklin uncovers the living heart of Freemasonry and reveals why it was – and still is – immensely relevant to anthroposophy. With profound research into its older rituals and teachings, this detailed and conscientious study is a unique contribution to comprehending freemasonry and anthroposophy – both historically and in the present day.

Mackey appears as author of this " Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and its Kindred Sciences," which, being a library in inself, superseded most of the Masonic works which have been tolerated by the craft — chiefly because none better could be obtained. Here is a work which fulfils the hope which sustained the author through ten years' literary labor, that, under one cover he "would furnish every Mason who might consult its pages the means of acquiring a knowledge of all matters connected with the science, the philosophy, and the history of his order." Up to the present time the modern literature of Freemasonry has been diffuse, lumbering, unreliable, and, out of all reasonable proportions. There is, in Mackey's "Encyclopaedia of Masonry," well digested, well arranged, and confined within reasonable limits, all that a Mason can desire to find in a book exclusively devoted to the history, the arts, science, and literature of Masonry. This is volume two out of four and covering the letters D to L.

Book excerpt: The North Riding extends from the fells on the Westmorland border to the highest cliffs in England, facing the North Sea. In an area of scattered settlements, Richmond is one of the best market towns in England, as Whitby is one of the best fishing towns. There are the remains of unusually complete and beautiful work at Rievaulx, complemented by fine eighteenth-century landscaping. The North Riding also saw Vanbrugh's astonishing first essay into architecture at Castle Howard, and there are many fine classical houses in a distinctively northern style. Industry has made its mark along the estuary of the Tees, where the Middlesbrough transporter bridge is a unique working survival of early twentieth-century engineering.
