Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of Jesus, Meditations for Six Months In this little volume I have proposed for meditation the chief miracles, parables, and other incidents and discourses in the Public Life of our Lord. At the head of each meditation I have indicated the passage from the Gospels on which it is based. But lest some should find it inconvenient to refer to it, I have given in each case a short summary of the passage. In the order of events I have followed Father Coleridge's Vitae Vita Nostra, and in matters of interpretation I have for the most part kept close to Maldonatus' Commentary on the Gospels. These Meditations are calculated to fill up just half the year. Any one commencing them after the octave of Corpus Christi will find that they will carry him on to the beginning of Advent or thereabouts. I have not attempted to give any rules respecting preparatory prayer, or good resolutions at the end, but I would remind the reader that if nothing can prosper without the help of God, least of all can meditations be made successfully unless His grace be given, and that the test of a good meditation is not mere pious thoughts or affections, but the practice during the day of the virtues pondered over in the morning meditation. The high doctrine that St. Paul taught to his converts, men indeed just rescued from a rather degraded paganism, insisted always on the lofty position to which each had been called. Our lives are cast in mean streets, and we therefore count them without honour or value. Conscious simply of their pettiness, we make no attempt to see their true grandeur. Taking, then, day by day a glimpse at one or other of the mysteries of God, we shall surely be led to understand ever more and more the worth of those souls of ours for which Christ did not disdain to die. So long as we can make it a general rule, we can well afford to allow some exceptions. But perhaps the word meditation itself sounds too alarming? We think not, for by this time the old fear of it as an intellectual gymnastic exercise of exceptional skill should have vanished.
