Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of Jesus, Meditations for Six Months In this little volume I have proposed for meditation the chief miracles, parables, and other incidents and discourses in the Public Life of our Lord. At the head of each meditation I have indicated the passage from the Gospels on which it is based. But lest some should find it inconvenient to refer to it, I have given in each case a short summary of the passage. In the order of events I have followed Father Coleridge's Vitae Vita Nostra, and in matters of interpretation I have for the most part kept close to Maldonatus' Commentary on the Gospels. These Meditations are calculated to fill up just half the year. Any one commencing them after the octave of Corpus Christi will find that they will carry him on to the beginning of Advent or thereabouts. I have not attempted to give any rules respecting preparatory prayer, or good resolutions at the end, but I would remind the reader that if nothing can prosper without the help of God, least of all can meditations be made successfully unless His grace be given, and that the test of a good meditation is not mere pious thoughts or affections, but the practice during the day of the virtues pondered over in the morning meditation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from This Same Jesus: Meditations on the Manifestations of Christ to-Day Meditations written throughout a year with no more precise object than that indicated by the words of their original title, Pro Salute Anim, may or may not be worthy of reproduction. Probably they are usually not. Yet such reprinting is what I have done in this little volume, although I may perhaps add that it is in response to many requests. These have reached me from various quarters, but each suggests that the short chapters might make a volume because of a certain characteristic of them all. Should this seem to be so to others, I shall be very glad that I have here selected, revised, and published them. That the chapters have something in common may well be the case, for they were written under circumstances likely to conduce to that end. True, some were written in Basutoland; others, while in khaki, in Cape Town and in France. But all were written with the War dominant in my mind, and while what I believe to be one of its great lessons was being hammered into my consciousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meditations on the Sufferings of Jesus Christ It is customary among Catholics to prepare for the celebration of the principal festivals of the year by certain pious exercises, such as fasts, novenas, triduums, and meditations on the divine mysteries; also by reading the lives of the saints and striving to imitate their virtues, mortifications, and heroic actions. In this manner the faithful prepare to solemnize the feasts of Christmas, Pentecost, and Corpus Christi; of the Immaculate Conception, Nativity, and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin; of All Saints, and of those saints for whom they have a particular devotion. They not only devote days and weeks to preparing themselves for the worthy observance of those feasts which they purpose to celebrate with special piety, but they also consecrate whole months to the honor of the objects of their particular devotion. For instance, the month of May is dedicated to the celebration of the glories and triumphs of the Virgin Mother of Jesus Christ; the month of June to the commemoration of the Most Sacred Heart of our Holy Redeemer; and in recent times the whole of November, particularly in Catholic Spain and the Southern Republics, has been devoted to the souls in purgatory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meditations for Layfolk To confront ourselves every morning with some deep truth of revela tion is to realize our dignity as Christians. The high doctrine that St. Paul taught to his converts, men indeed just rescued from a rather degraded paganism, insisted always on the lofty position to which each had been called. He dealt with the sinner by making him realize that he was intended to be a saint. All of us need this inspiriting view of our vocation. Our lives are cast in mean streets, and we therefore count them without honour or value. Conscious simply of their pettiness, we make no attempt to see their true grandeur. We see but dimly if we see only the vision of the glory of the world. Taking, then, day by day a glimpse at one or other of the mysteries of God, we shall surely be led to understand ever more and more the worth of those souls of ours for which Christ did not disdain to die. There will of course be no need to worry ourselves if through some cause or other we are not able each day to fit in our meditation. So long as we can make it a general rule, we can well afford to allow some exceptions. But perhaps the word meditation itself sounds too alarming? We think not, for by this time the old fear of it as an intellectual gymnastic exercise of exceptional skill should have vanished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering, monumental work utilizes the visionary legacy of Anne Catherine Emmerich and the spiritual scientific discoveries of Rudolf Steiner concerning various hidden facts of Christ's incarnation. Powell has established the dates and daily events of Jesus Christ on Earth. Further, he indicates their significance for our future. In part one, Powell gives a historical overview. Then, using esoteric sources and his own knowledge of sidereal astrology, he offers startling insights into the circumstances of the Christmas event and the incarnation. In part two, Powell offers a daily chronicle of the three-and-a-half-year ministry of Jesus Christ on Earth, dating the events with an unprecedented accuracy. Also, Powell correlates significant events in Christ's life with upcoming dates in the history of humankind and indicates that the living presence of the Christ is increasingly accessible to us.
