Book Synopsis Pursuit of Pattern Languages for Societal Change - PURPLSOC by : Baumgartner, Peter
Download or read book Pursuit of Pattern Languages for Societal Change - PURPLSOC written by Baumgartner, Peter and published by Edition Donau-Universität Krems. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international PURPLSOC (In Pursuit of Pattern Languages for Societal Change) platform aims to substantiate the relevance of Christopher Alexander’s pattern language approach in all major domains by showing its broad applicability and richness and bringing best practice examples from outside the scientific community into research. This anthology of 19 papers, proceedings of the PURPLSOC 2015 World Conference held at Danube University Krems in Austria, is the first outcome of this discussion and reflection. The papers bring a manifold and broad overview of the current state of the implementation of Alexander’s ideas in divergent fields. Additionally, PURPLSOC offers a platform for the research and discussion of Alexander’s most recent work: “The Nature of Order: An Essay on the Art of Building and the Nature of the Universe” (2004). The four volumes explore the “living process” with its “15 structure-preserving transformations” applied in the “unfolding of wholeness”.

Book Synopsis Adaptation Mechanisms of Grass and Forage Plants to Stressful Environments, Volume II by : Jin-Lin Zhang
Download or read book Adaptation Mechanisms of Grass and Forage Plants to Stressful Environments, Volume II written by Jin-Lin Zhang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is part of the article collection series - Adaptation Mechanisms of Grass and Forage Plants to Stressful Environments. Grass and forage plants serve multiple functions and benefits to humans and animals, such as beautifying landscapes, protecting the environment, improving human recreational activities, and providing feed for livestock and wild animals. There are growing concerns about continued global warming and increasing extreme weather events, which subsequently lead to frequent natural disasters and environmental problems. Compared to crops, grass and forage plants have evolved multiple mechanisms at physiological, biochemical, molecular, cellular, and subcellular levels to adapt to different environmental stresses such as high salinity, drought, heavy metal, insufficient or excessive light, extreme temperatures, pathogens and pests, etc. Increasing evidence indicates several main strategies for improving stress tolerance in grass and forage plants, including (i) natural metabolites or synthetic chemicals priming; (ii) application of beneficial microbes such as fungi and bacteria; (iii) biotic and/or abiotic stress priming; (iv) genetic breeding; and (v) traditional cross-breeding. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying these strategies may facilitate breeding for stress tolerance improvement in grass and forage plants.

Book Synopsis Green Scenarios: Mining Industry Responses to Environmental Challenges of the Anthropocene Epoch by : Artur Dyczko
Download or read book Green Scenarios: Mining Industry Responses to Environmental Challenges of the Anthropocene Epoch written by Artur Dyczko and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to present an alternative based on natural processes and an environmental approach to post-excavation site management, e.g., post-coal mining heaps. These sites are places where various mineral excavation by-products are collected. Nevertheless, some post-mineral excavation sites are oligotrophic, terrestrial, wetland, and water habitat islands, providing unique biodiversity enrichment in the landscape. These oligotrophic mineral habitats are essential in over-fertilized, eutrophic, agricultural and urban-industry surroundings. Some post-mineral excavation sites are places where the wildlife can develop and support the functional processes of novel ecosystems. Implementing the newest biogeochemical and comprehensive knowledge into urban-industry landscape management will help to establish the ecosystem’s processes and environmental functioning. There are several post-industrial sites in Europe where the wildlife areas developed due to natural processes, are becoming wildlife hotspots in densely populated urban-industry areas. In this respect, many of the oligotrophic mineral terrestrial, wetland, and water habitats of anthropogenic origin should not be categorized as environmentally dangerous and undergo economic utility-focused reclamation. Facing the actual environmental constraints of the Anthropocene Epoch, the book’s chapters presenting the natural basics and perquisites of the environmental ecosystem mosaics, will be interesting for a broad range of environmentalists (scientists and students), miners, economists, and sociologists.
Book Synopsis Allele Mining for Genomic Designing of Oilseed Crops by : Chittaranjan Kole
Download or read book Allele Mining for Genomic Designing of Oilseed Crops written by Chittaranjan Kole and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deliberates on the concept, strategies, tools, and techniques of allele mining in oilseed crops and its application potential in genome elucidation and improvement, including studying allele evolution, discovery of superior alleles, discerning new haplotypes, assessment of intra- and interspecific similarity, and studies of gene expression and gene prediction. Available gene pools in global germplasm collections, specifically consisting of wild allied species and local landraces for almost all major crops, have facilitated allele mining. The development of advanced genomic techniques, including PCR-based allele priming and Eco-TILLING-based allele mining, is now widely used for mining superior alleles. Allele's discovery has become more relevant now for employing molecular breeding to develop designed crop varieties matching consumer needs and with genome plasticity to adapt to climate change scenarios. All these concepts and strategies, along with precise success stories, are presented in the chapters dedicated to the major oilseed crops. 1. This is the first book on the novel strategy of allele mining in oilseed crops for precise breeding. 2. This book presents genomic strategies for mining superior alleles underlying agronomic traits from genomic resources. 3. This book depicts case studies of PCR-based allele priming and Eco-TILLING based allele mining. 4. This book elaborates on gene discovery and gene prediction in major oilseed crops. This book will be useful to students and faculties in various plant science disciplines, including genetics, genomics, molecular breeding, agronomy, and bioinformatics; scientists in seed industries; and policymakers and funding agencies interested in crop improvement.

Book Synopsis Mining Structures of Factual Knowledge from Text by : Xiang Ren
Download or read book Mining Structures of Factual Knowledge from Text written by Xiang Ren and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real-world data, though massive, is largely unstructured, in the form of natural-language text. It is challenging but highly desirable to mine structures from massive text data, without extensive human annotation and labeling. In this book, we investigate the principles and methodologies of mining structures of factual knowledge (e.g., entities and their relationships) from massive, unstructured text corpora. Departing from many existing structure extraction methods that have heavy reliance on human annotated data for model training, our effort-light approach leverages human-curated facts stored in external knowledge bases as distant supervision and exploits rich data redundancy in large text corpora for context understanding. This effort-light mining approach leads to a series of new principles and powerful methodologies for structuring text corpora, including (1) entity recognition, typing and synonym discovery, (2) entity relation extraction, and (3) open-domain attribute-value mining and information extraction. This book introduces this new research frontier and points out some promising research directions.
