The writers do not wish to imply that all districts mentioned in this bulletin were visited during the summer of 1917, for a great deal of the material has been gathered from other reports, especially from publications of the United States Geological Survey. However it is hoped that this report will be of help to those who are interested in mining in the State of Idaho. The plan is to continue the field work and subsequently publish the results of the investigations in much more detail, with greater emphasis given the metallurgical treatment of the ores and the problems involved. A narrow strip of land along the east border of the reservation had been included in the phosphate withdrawals, and the principal Object Of the examination was the determination Of the extent and character Of the phosphate lands included in the reservation. Other mineral deposits were also noted. The work was assigned to the writer with instructions to proceed with an examination and mineral classification of the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. G. R. Mansfield, with J. W. Merritt and J. W. Clark as assistants, spent the four months July to October, 1913, in the prosecution Of the work. In the middle Of Sep tember, after the withdrawal of J. IV. Merritt, the party was joined by C. A. Bonine and Wallace Lee, who rendered valuable assistance. 'the chief Of the section of nonmetalliferous deposits, H. S. Gale, spent the last week in July with the party. He partici pated in the mapping and made valuable suggestions with regard to plans and methods of work. G. H. Girty, paleontologist, was with the party for three weeks in August and September and made a fauna] and stratigraphic study of the Carboniferous and Triassic formations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mining Districts of the Idaho Basin and the Boise Ridge, Idaho According to Gilbert, however, this Pleistocene is older than the highest stage of Lake Bonneville, during which the lake found an outlet at Red Rock Pass. The river draining the lake at this time appears to have flowed over the surface of the basalt. According to Hague, ' the latest eruptions in the Yellowstone National Park are of basalts, which stretch far into Idaho in somber, monotonous beds. These basalts are pre-glacial, and their eruption is referred to the Pliocene. About 1869 Mr. Clarence King visited the lower part of the Snake River basin and collected a number of fossils from beds beneath the basalt at Castle and Sinker creeks, tributaries from the south, joining the river about due south of Boise. The fossils have been described in detail, while no description of the localities was ever published, a fact which has led to some confusion. All mines and mining claims, both placer and rock in place containing or bearing gold, silver, cop per, lead, coal, or other valuable mineral or metal deposits, after purchase thereof from the United States, shall be taxed at the price paid the United States therefor, unless the surface ground, or some part thereof of said mine or mining claim is used for other than mining pur poses and has a separate and independent value for such other purposes, in which case said surface ground or any part thereof so used for other than mining pur poses shall be taxed at its value for such other purposes, and all machinery used in mining and all property and surface improvements upon mines or mining claims, which have a value separate and independent of such mines or mining claims and the net annual proceeds of all mines and mining claims shall be taxed. Sec. 2. Every person, corporation or association en gaged in mining upon any quartz vein or lode, or placer. Mining claim containing gold, silver, copper, lead, coal or other precious and valuable minerals or metals or mineral or metal deposits must between the first day of January and the first day of May in each year make out a statement of the net profits derived from the mining of said metals or minerals from each mine or mining claim owned or worked by such person, or from each group of mines or mining claims worked by a common system of develop ment, during the year preceding the lst day of January, such statement must be verified by the oath of such person or superintendent or managing agent of such corporation or association, who must deliver the same to the assessor of the county in which such mines are situated. These were attacked by Shoshone and Bannock Indians and forced to retire. This led to sanguinary contests for suprem acy. There was also a number of renegade Indians, who hav ing been expelled from their tribes held no tribal relations, whose repeated depredations on the settlements led to their summary punishment in the winter of 1863. In 1877 occurred the trouble with the non-treaty Indians of the Nez Perce tribe under Chief Joseph, which ended with their capture and re moval to Indian Territory. In 1878 and 1879 the Bannock and other tribes of lesser note in Southern Idaho began hostilities against the growing settlements, but they were captured by the troops after a short campaign and placed on reservations. Since 1879 there has been but little, if any, fears from Indians by the settlers. They have been placed on reservations and are, though slowly, acquiring habits tending toward civiliza tion.
